AGENDA ITEM 6A Page 1 of 4 CITY OF NAPA PARKS AND RECREATION SERVICES DEPARTMENT AGENDA SUMMARY REPORT DATE: September 17, 2014 TO: FROM: SUBJECT: Tree Advisory Commission Dave Perazzo, Parks Superintendent Arbor Day 2014 - Update DISCUSSION: The City of Napa first celebrated Arbor Day in 1990. 2014 will commemorate the 25 th year that the City has recognized Arbor Day in our community. This year s annual Arbor Day celebration will be held on Saturday, October 18 th at 9:00a.m. As discussed at the March 2014 meeting, the Commission agreed with staff s recommendation to plant trees at Kiwanis Park for Arbor Day. A need for additional tree planting has occurred since that time frame, so staff would like to incorporate tree planting in Esther Deaver Park and street trees on Trower Avenue. The main event will be held at Kiwanis Park beginning at 9:00a.m. Additional tree plantings will take place at Esther Deaver Park and on Trower Avenue in the same time frame. Below is information with details for each location. Kiwanis Park- 8 Trees Six trees to be planted in the turf area fronting Randolph Street and two additional trees on the Elm Street side planter strip. Red Oaks, Quercus suber, would be planted in this location as they are a large species that will adapt to a turf grass environment. Esther Deaver Park- 8 Trees A number of Gingko trees were planted in the park by the community a few years ago. Some trees did not survive and others were recently damaged by vandals. The replacement trees planted at this location will be Ginkgo biloba Autumn Gold. Trower Avenue,1900 Block- Number to be determined A number of Liquidambar street trees were removed and sidewalks repaired on Trower Avenue beginning at Klamath Park and heading east. Trees had not been replanted as they were on the backside of properties with no watering commitment or there was no irrigation in front of the park. Trees will be replanted with the commitment of hand watering by seasonal staff in the summer. As this is a long area two tree species will be planted; Little Leaf Linden- Tilia Cordata and European Hornbeam - Carpinus betulus fastigata.
