Property White Gates is an imposing double fronted late Victorian detached period home on a generous plot situated in an enviable position close to the village centre. This fabulous home has accommodation arranged over three floors with versatile accommodation retaining many original features. The ground floor has a reception hall with galleried landing, three large reception rooms, kitchen/diner overlooking the rear gardens, utility room, sauna and shower room. The first floor has four double sized bedrooms, a Jack N Jill bathroom and one of the bedrooms benefits from a dressing room and en-suite bathroom. The second floor has four rooms; two of which are arranged as bedrooms plus a studio, a sitting room and an additional bathroom. Externally to the front there is a substantial gravelled driveway leading to the garage with a large and very attractive rear garden which is laid to lawn with mature trees and shrubs. Birchington town centre is a short walk away where you will find a good variety of shops, bars and restaurants as well as a mainline railway station providing regular services to London. The Cathedral City of Canterbury is approximately 14 miles away and there are good road links to London via the A299 Thanet Way and the M2 motorway.
Our Time Here It was the stunning period features, high ceilings and fantastically proportioned rooms, as well as the spacious gardens that first attracted me to White Gates. The property was in a terrible condition when I bought it and I have spent the last 10 years lovingly restoring the house: retaining period features while bringing it up to modern living standards. This has included new hardwood exterior doors and stained glass and a modern integrated heating and hot water system, as the house was at one time three flats. The layout of the house allows everyone living here to have their own space, which has been an important aspect for us. My favourite place is the yellow drawing room, which has a very special feel, being a quiet space to retreat to. Like all the front rooms it enjoys the sun throughout the day. The old scullery is now a contemporary utility area. The large kitchen offers the opposite: a place to gather in the morning and early evening whilst preparing dinner with the separate dining room a great space for dinner parties. I have reconfigured the garden to include a Magnolia collection and created arid beds with tropical and subtropical plants alongside a wide sun terrace, inspired by the Abbey Gardens in Tresco. Mature trees screen the garden, offering seclusion and shelter from wintry sea winds. The house is only a short distance from the seafront, and rooms on the top floor have panoramic sea views. As artists we use these rooms as studios - thanks to the fantastic light but they have been equally enjoyed as a separate space by our nieces and nephews and other visitors over the years. The property is just a few minutes walk from the shops and Surgery in the village centre, with the railway station at the end of the road. There are also buses serving the local area from the front of the station and the village square. As a dog lover I enjoy the fantastic walks on offer across the marshes, through farmyards to the seawall and, of course, along the beautiful beach at Minnis Bay. White Gates is a great house for a certain time of your life, when you have a family and are entertaining friends. It s now time for my partner and I to downsize, but we will be very sad to leave and will miss the house and garden immensely.
