Making the Most of your ISA Membership: 2012 ISA Technical Division Symposia By Graham Nasby This column is part of a series of articles about taking advantage of the resources and opportunities that come with your ISA membership. Throughout the course of the year, the ISA as an organization maintains a busy calendar. On top of the numerous activities that the ISA s various local sections organize, ISA technical divisions host a wide variety of division symposia that are focused on specific industries and technical aspects of automation. These events are global in nature and draw attendees from around the world. This article is meant to provide a brief overview of each of the ISA s division symposia. Each symposium is described in a few short paragraphs, followed by links to more information. These links include symposia website addresses and key symposium contact people. Symposia details such as program schedules, presentation formats, calls for abstracts/papers, submission timelines, optional short-courses and registration details can be found on the individual symposia websites or by contacting the individuals listed. The 2012 ISA technical division symposia calendar is as follows: Apr 16-17, 2012 ISA Communications Division / ISA100 Wireless for Factory Automation Workshop Apr 22-26, 2012 ISA Analysis Division Symposium (AD) Apr 25-26, 2012 ISA Safety & Security Division Symposium (SAFETY) May 14-16, 2012 ISA Leak Detection and Repair Fugitive Emissions Symposium (LDAR) June 3-8, 2012 ISA Power Industry Division Symposium (POWID) June 4-8, 2012 ISA International Instrumentation Symposium (IIS) June 5-7, 2012 ISA Communications Division Symposium (CommDiv) June 9-12, 2012 ISA Spring Leaders Meeting / Standards Committee Meetings (SLM)* Aug 7-9, 2012 ISA Water/Wastewater and Automatic Controls Symposium (WWAC) Aug 15-17, 2012 ISA Marketing & Sales Summit (M&SS) Sept 23-26 ISA Fall Leaders Meeting / Standards Committee Meetings (FLM)* Sept 24-27, 2012 ISA Automation Week (AW)* *Note: The Spring Leaders Meeting, Fall Leaders Meeting and Automation Week not really division symposia; they are shown in the above calendar to only to provide context in terms of scheduling. An overview of the FLM, SLM and AW will be provided in a separate article. Each of the ISA s division symposia are unique and are focused on a specific technical area of interest. Some are focused on specific industries, like POWID and WWAC, while others are more technology or application specific such as IIS and SAFETY. The common thread between the symposia is that they each welcome a wide cross-section of interested individuals that includes end-users, vendors, consultants, system integrators, and engineering firms. The common goal is the sharing of practical information so that everyone can better solve today s automation challenges. One of the key benefits of ISA membership is discounted registration fees for division symposia. ISA members also receive advance notification of when online registration for the symposia becomes available. Overviews of the Symposia, Workshops and Summits Communications Division / ISA100 Wireless for Factory Automation Workshop April 16-17, 2012 (Mon-Tues) Detroit, Michigan www.isa.org/mstemplate.cfm?micrositeid=530 This event, hosted by the ISA Communications Division, provides the opportunity to meet with peers to share ideas and learn about the latest advances in the use of industrial wireless communications in a factory setting. In addition to the workshop, there will be standards committee meetings taking place as well. The standards meetings will

2012 ISA Technical Division Symposia Nasby 2 provide attendees with the opportunity to meet with the authors, editors and contributors of standards documents in development. The resulting conversations with these experts will significantly increase your understanding of wireless communications technology thus better preparing you for this ground-breaking technology and how to effectively deploy it in your facility.
