So overweight people are now average which means, you have met your New Year s resolution! -- Jay Leno ISA Charters New Standards Committee on Intelligent Device Management Research Triangle Park, NC The International Society of Automation (ISA) has established a new standards committee, ISA108, Intelligent Device Management. The committee will define standard templates of best practices and work processes for design, development, installation and use of diagnostic and other information provided by intelligent field devices in the process industries. Intelligent field devices, pervasive in modern process manufacturing, bring the promise of transforming the way information is utilized, related to these devices and the processes they control. For example, devices with impending maintenance problems can be identified earlier with the information provided directly to process automation systems, plant asset management systems or other systems or software as required. Indeed, as ISA108 Managing Director Ian Verhappen of Yokogawa Canada points out, with more than 80% of smart instrument data not being used or even connected to an online data collection system, the lost revenues to the process industries are tremendous. Thus, the need is clear for a series of standards on how to integrate this data into control systems and work practices to achieve the benefits of proactive maintenance. The bulk of the committee s work will be conducted electronically. If you are interested in participating in ISA108, please contact ISA at (919) 549-8411, or visit www.isa.org/ standards. Letter from the ISA President Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from your ISA President I appreciate the opportunity to provide a brief Holiday Message to our members in Southern California. This is my old stomping ground, having grown up in Orange, married in Tustin, went to college at Cal State Fullerton, and took my first engineering job in LA. The first ISA event I attended was in Anaheim in 1979 with a paper on an 8080 microprocessor controller for a rocket exhaust gas sampling system. This year I was able to visit and meet with many of you at the Analysis Symposium in Anaheim, the Spring Leaders Meeting in La Jolla and Orange County Section s Automation OC in Huntington Beach. I enjoyed the chance to hear your thoughts and gather ideas on how to improve ISA. My goals as ISA President remain unchanged: 1. Service to our members and 2. Promoting and advancing the arts and science of automation with instrumentation as the bedrock Continued on next page Education and Training Local ISA student members appreciate your support When you renew your ISA membership each year, remember that a great deal effort of all the sections goes into supporting students preparing for careers in instrumentation, control systems engineering and process automation. This effort is possible because each ISA member contributes. A portion of all membership dues goes towards providing training which is not offered in schools, supporting student programs, providing books, materials and scholarships for local students. Also, if your company has any new or surplus equipment that can be donated, this also goes a long way toward building the future of our local industry. For information about how you can support students by donations or by offering to teach or mentor in a subject area, please contact the Student Liaison, Student Section President, Advisor or Section President, or Newsletter Editor. Contact info is listed on page 2. Below are listed all of the current ISA student members and their host sections. Los Angeles and Cal Poly Pomona Section Students A. C. Wang, Agustin R. Robert Burnell receives Jake Groenewegen Section Service Award Robert Burnell, P.E., was presented with the Jake Groenewegen Section Service Award December 1, 2012, at the annual Los Angeles Orange County Joint Section Christmas party and award ceremony by ISA Los Angeles Section President Paul Franklin. Under Bob s guidance, the leaders of the Cal Poly Section have increased from 14 to over 50 members in only four months. Bob Burnell, PE, has been the Safety, Standards & Practices Chair for the Los Angeles Section and Liaison to the ISA Cal Poly Student Section for the past few years. He has given several presentations and classes on safety issues such as flash and safety related topics and makes regular presentations to both Cal Poly and Long Beach State ISA student members on power and I&C topics. Bob is a senior electrical engineer, a specification engineer and a certified trainer on arc flash and electrical safety. Bob started out his career as in industrial electrician working in automation, power generation and the petrochemical industry. After ten years in the field, he returned to school and obtained a BSEE from Cal Poly Pomona in 1998. He was active with the ISA student section at Cal Poly as well as the professional section following graduation. Following a brief tenure with Frito Lay, he joined GE Engineering Services before joining Applied Engineering Concepts in Pasadena in January 2012. Bob Burnell can be reached at (626) 389-2102 or by email at bob.b@aec-us.com. From the ISA President continued from page 3 To make these goals a reality, we must continue to provide current technical content to support ISA s technical conferences and events; actively support sections and divisions; and offer exceptional programs to automation professionals. I am glad to report that we have made strides in many areas and have programs in place to build into the future. In the coming years, the Society has a number of training and educational goals. We ll continue expanding our effort to establish automation curriculums at varying technical levels appropriate for instruction at community colleges, and as part of undergraduate and graduate degree programs.. ISA will push forward with providing flexible, affordable training programs that best serve individual and corporate needs in a variety of formats and with multiple delivery options. The Society will also search for and seek out corporations who are willing to explore enhancing their internal training for automation engineers and technicians by partnering with ISA leveraging our competency based certification programs and the Control Systems Engineering PE designation. As I hope you know, all of this is now formally aggregated and recognized in the Automation Competency Model which defines the profession and the body of knowledge known as Automation. We have some exciting news on the ISA membership front. In the fall of 2011the Council of Society Delegates (CSD) approved two new membership categories: the Automation Community Member and the Automation Affiliate Member. These new categories were developed by our own ISA Image and Membership Department to offer a broader automation professional audience a taste of the ISA experience while lowering the cost of entry Continued on next page 4 ISA Newsletters, Southern District 11 Nov - Dec 2012

to the Society and concurrently providing a natural progression through the membership experience. The Society recognizes that times have changed and the traditional membership types that ISA has offered over the years may not fit everyone s situation today. Through these new membership options, ISA seeks to engage a wider portion of the global automation community and to offer them unparalleled access to technical information, professional development resources, and opportunities to network with other automation professionals. We believe this will increase engagement levels across the Society in the years ahead. We have added over 7,400 community members and are working to connect them with our sections as potential full members and leaders. Governance As voted on by the Council of Delegates last fall, a new task force was formed and their report has been made available to all members for review and comment. Details will be worked over the next few months with potential changes in the Manual of Organization and Procedures (MOP) being brought forward at the 2013 CSD meeting. The task force reviewed the work of the 2011 governance task force, collected data about current internal operations and best practices of other governance models, analyzed data, identified trends, and developed conclusions regarding the impact of these trends on ISA. Social Media We are embracing the use of Social Media to provide another outlet for spreading the word about ISA and connecting to the broader automation community. I encourage all members to take part. Some suggestions are: 1. Join our LinkedIn Group, Like our Facebook page, and join Twitter if that is of interest. But don t just join, participate in the conversations, make a comment. 2. Let the ISA Community Manager know about local events, contests being held at the section and district levels. Share what is happening when you can. Take pictures at events and they will get posted. We have much good news share it! 3. If you are on a event planning committee, think about how social media can amplify your efforts. Send technical abstracts to post on the Interchange, sponsor news, anything that would highlight the event. The implementation of a new association management system (AMS) project got underway in the first quarter of 2012 and is progressing on schedule for rollout in 2013. Honors and Awards Changes The new honors and awards program at ISA Celebrating Excellence had a very successful initial year. I personally feel one of the benefits of belonging to ISA is the opportunity to receive acknowledgement from your peers for contributions made over a career. Our new program includes awards for both technical contributions and ISA service recognition. Help us make this even better by submitting nominations for these awards. Meeting our goals will take all of us working together and it will not always be easy. As a Society of Systems Engineers we can all appreciate that to optimize the over-riding system of systems, sometimes the subsystems require sub-optimization. Each element of ISA brings a set of expertise and strengths that collectively make us the organization we are. I urge each of you to contribute as an individual, Continued on next page 8 ISA Newsletters, Southern District 11 Nov - Dec 2012

section, district, division, department member, and leader to help strengthen ISA and deliver ONE ISA to the world. As you develop plans and consider options in your role as an ISA volunteer, please keep these two questions in mind: - How are we benefitting our members? - How are we advancing the practice of automation? I have enjoyed working with each of you in 2012 and look forward to continuing to serve ISA in the next years. Working together, we can set the standard for automation! And finally, as we enjoy family and friends this holiday season, let s make a special effort to remember and thank our men and women in our armed forces who are sacrificing so much for all of us. My wife goes out of her way to personally thank every service person she sees believe me, they appreciate it. Analysis Division Recognition Sandra Krauthamer Honored as Member of the Year To any one of the 300 plus people who attended the 57th annual Analysis Division Symposium in Anaheim in April the recognition of Division Member of the Year will come as no surprise. Sandra Krauthamer, P.E., took on the responsibility in March 2011, assembled the team, executed the plan and produced an outstanding result. Under Sandra s guidance, the Symposium had a full slate of papers, three educational elements, a record number of vendor participants and, by virtue of her close oversight, contributed a substantial net proceeds to the Society. Of all the tasks in the Analysis Division, taking on the assignment as Symposium Host Chair is the most intensive of all and requires a considerable commitment from the individual as well as their employer. Most of this time comes before or after working hours but the Analysis Division would also like to acknowledge Chevron s support in allowing Sandra to take on this critical assignment. Sandra has made a tremendous contribution to her profession and her peers. We are all grateful to her, this award is well deserved and hard earned. Sandra Krauthamer is an analyzer engineer in Instrumentation & Analyzers at the Chevron Products Co, El Segundo refinery and has served on the Board of Directors of the ISA Los Angeles Section.
