4 AEROSOL CANS Individual Actions: Contact facilities for processing of spray cans. Petroleum based propellants and listed contents are considered hazardous waste. Avoid aerosol propellants using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or Di Methyl Ether. Recycle 100% of empty aerosol spray cans as scrap metal. Recycle 100% of empty aerosol cans. 5 ALUMINUM Individual Actions: Place aluminum in mixed recycling containers. Recycling aluminum uses only 5% of the energy required to make new aluminum. Aluminum can be recycled over and over again. 6 ASEPTIC PACKAGING Individual Actions: Place aseptic packaging in mixed recycling containers. Aseptic processing retains more nutrients, uses less energy and allows processed food to keep for long periods of time without preservatives. The overriding motivation for aseptically packaged foods in plastics or composites instead of metal or glass containers is the major reduction of packaging costs. Alternate material choices, using plastics in place of metals or glass and maximum use of shipping volume when using rectangular packages in place of rounded bottles and cans all contribute to reduced package and shipping costs. 13 CARDBOARD Individual Action: Reduce the amount of waste cardboard. Recycle 100% of the remaining cardboard in mixed recycling. Reducing the amount of waste paper and cardboard we generate has more impact than increasing the amount we recycle. Cardboard and paper cannot be recycled infinitely. Depending on the type of paper, the individual fibers can only survive intact for perhaps six or seven trips through the energy intensive process required to turn them into new boxes and new sheets of paper. Every year the average person produces nearly 475 pounds of food waste. Catlin Gabel School produces less than 25 pounds of food waste per person per year. Reduce food waste 10% (2,241 pounds/year or 250 pounds/month) from the 12/13 school year (22,410 pounds) 250 pounds per month = 4 ounces per person Zero Food Waste The night custodial crew picks up food waste daily from the Barn.
