Sustainability Being a responsible steward of the environment is important to Honeywell s global growth. It also supports a marketplace for products that address demand for more energy efficiency and energy management. Corporate Sustainability Goals In 2007, Honeywell established five-year greenhouse gas, energy efficiency, hazardous waste reduction, and Total Case Incident Rate (the number of occupational injuries and illnesses per 100 employees) objectives for our internal operations. We monitor our progress regularly and are on target to meet our goals. 28
Technologies and Solutions for Sustainable Opportunity Solar Power Honeywell s experience as a leading manufacturer of advanced films enabled the invention of the Honeywell PowerShield line of backing films, which protect photovoltaic modules including critical components that convert sunlight into electricity in all types of environments. The materials are UV-, moisture-, and weather-resistant. Air Traffic Management Weather-related delays and cancellations have cost the U.S. $18 billion in one year, and turbulence-related incidents can cost airlines up to $100 million in one year. With current air traffic at or near capacity, Honeywell is helping modernize the outdated, inefficient U.S. and European air traffic control systems. Our technologies, including aviation communication and surveillance avionics, airport lighting, and navigation systems, help increase safety, expand capacity, reduce costs, and protect the environment. They also create an air traffic management system that can handle the world s growing demand for air transportation. In 2009, Honeywell was included as the only U.S. company selected to join Eurocontrol and the European Commission in the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU). Honeywell Green Fuels Honeywell s UOP/Eni Ecofining can convert a range of feedstocks, including camelina, jatropha, and algae, to a high-quality, drop-in replacement Honeywell Green Diesel. Honeywell Green Diesel can be used within today s fuel infrastructure, requires no modifications to automobile engines, and offers up to an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions 29 Technologies Enable Solutions
Nearly 50% of Honeywell s product portfolio is related to energy efficiency Programmable Thermostats Honeywell technologies for the residential segment could hold projected energy growth to 9% by 2030, reducing forecasted growth in fossil fuel emissions by the equivalent of 200 million metric tons of CO2, which is the equivalent of the CO2 emissions from the energy use of more than 16 million homes in a year. Honeywell programmable thermostats protect the environment while generating up to 30% in energy savings. Low-Global-Warming Refrigerants and Blowing Agents Honeywell s low-global-warming-potential solutions and blowing agents significantly reduce the environmental impact of air conditioning systems, refrigerators, foams, and aerosols. In fact, mobile air conditioning systems cooled by Honeywell s lowglobal-warming-potential refrigerants produce up to 30% fewer emissions than those cooled by CO2. New homes using closed-cell spray foam insulation applied with Honeywell s Enovate blowing agent have experienced energy savings of up to 40% vs. homes insulated with fiberglass. Turbochargers Honeywell turbochargers enable auto manufacturers to reduce the size of an engine by 25-30%, improving fuel efficiency without compromising performance. Diesel turbocharged cars and light trucks using Honeywell turbochargers consume 30-40% less fuel than non-turbocharged gasoline engines. A Honeywell turbocharger can help an engine generate up to 30% less CO2 emissions, as compared with nonturbocharged engines with the same horsepower. 30 Driving Efficiency
