In Memory of Geoff Vanner!! Vale Geoffrey D Vanner 1926 2015 Geoff Vanner passed away after a long battle with illness on 12 th September and he is now at peace. Geoff joined the Bonsai Society of Victoria not long after it was founded in 1972. He quickly started making a contribution to the Club by becoming a committee member in 1974 and remained on the committee until 2009. In that time he served as Vice-President and in 1989 he took on the role of Secretary which he held for twenty years before stepping down from the committee in 2009. An amazing 35 years of service to the Club. Apart from serving on the committee Geoff played a large part in producing the newsletter for many years. He would, in the old fashioned way, hand write the newsletter, and his wife, Marge, would in the very modern way type it up on typewriter. Copies would then be made to send out to the Club members. Geoff was made a Life Member of the Club in 1984, and Marge in 1991. Geoff attended many workshops by overseas demonstrators and he and Marge had a real soft spot for Hirotoshi Saitoh. Geoff and Marge welcomed Hirotoshi into their home and billeted him for his visits which occurred bi-annually over more that twenty years. Geoff and Marge had many trips to Japan attending conventions, and touring the country and developed a real love for the Japanese culture. Many Club members experienced great generosity from Geoff. He gave freely of his time in helping Club members at meetings and workshops. Many current members are proud owners of an ex Geoff tree. His unique handmade pots are also keenly sought after. Geoff will be sadly missed by the Club. Geoff and Marge really appreciated the friendships made over the many years of association with the Club. Marge sends her thanks to everyone for their kind wishes and thoughts

Monday Monthly Meeting 24 August 15 Grafting At this meeting we had a demonstration by Mike Simonetto on grafting of branches and attaching additional trees to a raft bonsai. The members then had the opportunity to discuss their bonsai grafting with Mike and other members who had this experience. Grafting is a great way to restyle and add branches position on your bonsai To graft you need a sharp grafting knife and wire Original Bonsai with Grafted trees on the main raft trunk by Completed ready to be grown on to a additional trees to be cutting into it and attaching the new trees stage to be potted grafted on Member discussing their trees with Mike and other members

How to graft a Bonsai tree When? Pines should be grafted in the winter, Junipers and most deciduous trees in the spring or summer. How? Grafting will only work when the stump and the graft belong to the same botanical family. Two techniques are commonly used for Bonsai purposes; side-grafting (to add a branch or root to an existing tree) and topgrafting (to merge a stump and a graft together to form a new tree). Side grafting First step is to find a suitable graft to add to the tree; you might take a graft from another tree or you can use material from the tree itself (basically relocating a branch or root). The graft should not be too large, about 5 cm (2 ) is enough (see photo 1, below). Make a shallow incision in the bark of the stump (using a sharp, flat knife) of about 1 cm (0.4 ) long. Be careful not to cut into the hardwood of the tree (see photo 2, below). Now take the graft and cut the last 1 cm (0.4 ) at an angle, to make it fit properly into the incision of the stump. Next place the graft with the barkless portion facing the interior of the tree into the stump, making sure the cambial layers of both the graft and the stump contact. Use wire or an elastic material to wrap the stump and the graft tightly together (see photo 3, below). It will take about two months before the graft will show signs of growth, however, do not remove the wire that holds the stump and the graft together for at least a year to make sure they bond properly. Top grafting 1 Take a stump of at least 5 mm thick and cut it straight off at about 10 cm (4 ) height (see photo 1, below). The graft should be thinner than the stump and around 5 cm (2 ) long (see photo 1, above). 2 Using a sharp knife make a vertical incision (of about 2 cm, or 1 long) into the stump, splitting it just outside the middle (see photo 2, below). 3 Next, take the graft and cut the last 2 cm (1 ) at an angle. Insert it into the stump with the bark-less side of the graft pointing towards the middle of the stump; make sure the cambial layers contact (see photo 3, below). 4 Use wire or an elastic material to wrap the stump and the graft tightly together. After about a year the graft should start growing, however, do not remove the wire that holds the stump and the graft together for another year. The point at which the graft is inserted into the stump will be clearly thicker than the rest of the trunk, although this will slightly decrease over the years.
