Your RECYCLING COLLECTION User Guide www.baie-durfe.qc.ca

Quebecers are recycling more than ever! However, much remains to be done to raise citizen awareness as many items thrown away each year do not belong in a recycling bin; objects such as toasters, rugs, pillows, tires and car batteries are manually removed from the selection process. This additional manpower is costly! In order to properly identify what you can and cannot put in your recycling bin, please refer to your User Guide for complete details. Some interesting Facts Each year in Quebec, 400 million returnable containers and 565 million bottles of water are thrown away in our garbage. It can take 400 years for a plastic bottle to decompose if it is not recycled. More than 700 000 tons of recyclable material are recovered each year through the municipal curbside recycling programs. In 2013, 8 million tires were recovered, recycled and transformed into a variety of goods. Some items which cannot be collected can still be recycled. You can bring your clothes, shoes, books and other items to your nearest donation box, thus giving them a second life. An even greater range of recyclable material such as batteries, computers, paint cans, old barbecues or bulky items, can be brought to an Ecocentre. The Ecocentre LaSalle located at 7272, rue Saint- Patrick in Ville LaSalle is the one nearest you. They can be contacted at 514 872-0384. You will be asked to provide proof of residency and a photo ID. Visits are unlimited and material disposal is free. For a full listing of addresses, refer to the phone number above.

Bulky Items The second Monday of the month For your larger sized items, we provide one collection per month from May to October. Each household can put out a maximum of TEN items, weighing no more than 100 kg (220 lbs) each, and measuring no more than 1.8 m x 1.2 m (6 ft x 4 ft). Items should be placed by the roadside between 8 p.m. the night before and 7 a.m. the day of the collection. List of accepted bulky items: Hot water tanks; Electrical household appliances (except those containing refrigeration gas); MONDAYS Bathtubs, toilets, sinks; Non-upholstered furniture made of wood, metal or plastic (tables, chairs, desks, dressers, etc.); Propane barbecue grills (without the propane tank); Pool covers (only rolled); Mirrors, glass panes and old windows; Electric baseboard heaters, kitchen range hoods; Electrical metal appliances of all sizes; Large household items. In order to ensure the safety of those performing the bulky items collection, it is recommended to secure all items by removing any cutting edges or objects containing nails and to bundle them to prevent scattering. Keep an eye on our website, our electronic billboard and the News & Views, to keep track of the different waste collection pick-up dates. Special Pick-ups Every Monday upon request Hazardous Waste Two dates are designated by the City of Montréal each year: one in the SPRING and one in the FALL. Household hazardous waste can be dropped off at the Public Works building on the designated days. Electronic Waste MONDAYS A special pick-up service is available for items such as construction material which you may wish to dispose of quickly. You can contact the Public Works department at least 3 days before the desired pick-up date at 514 457-2877 to schedule a pick-up. A minimum $70 fee is applicable. Two dates are designated by the City of Montréal each year: one in the SPRING and one in the FALL. Electronic waste can be dropped off at the Public Works building on the same designated days as the household hazardous waste collection. For a complete listing of accepted items, consult the recyclemyelectronics.ca/qc. Please note that the following items are not accepted in an Ecocentre. They must therefore be disposed of through the regular household collection on Wednesdays: Carpets, mattresses, armchairs and couches Empty paint cans (without a lid) Tires must always be brought to a tire centre.

Did you know that 50 % of what we throw out is recyclable? How do I place my recycling bin for collection? Through our consumption habits, recycling can significantly reduce our everyday waste in landfills by helping to create a wide range of reusable products. In addition, you encourage job creation. Here are just a few examples of transformed goods made from recycled materials: PAPER and CARTON become egg containers, magazines, newspapers, toilet paper or facial tissue. METAL is transformed into new metal cans, aluminum paper and plates. GLASS is transformed into new glass bottles and jars of all kind. PLASTIC becomes recycling bins, flower pots and park benches. Your bin should be placed at the curbside (not on your lawn or in the street) between 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and 7 a.m. on Thursdays. The wheels and handle must face your residence and be well aligned. The recycling logo must face the street. Leave at least 60 cm (2 feet) of clearance on each side and at the rear of the bin. If you have more than one bin, place them side by side and leave a space of 60 cm (2 feet) between them. Make sure that no vehicle or object interferes with the mechanical lifting of the bin. In winter, the snowplow must accomplish its duty. To avoid the risk of collision between the snowplow and your bin or to ensure that your recycling will not be ignored due to an inappropriate positioning of your bin, do not leave it too close to the street. All recyclable material must be inside the bin with the lid closed. Items outside the bin will not be picked up. You will need to wait for the next collection. If all the conditions above are not properly respected, your bin may not be emptied.

Who owns the recycling bin? Identified with the Baie-D Urfé crest and a serial number, recycling bins are the property of the Town. A white strip on the bin allows you to write your address to avoid any confusion. Please note that the 64-litre bin is no longer picked-up through the recycling collection. If you move, you must leave your bin on the premises. If a wheel breaks or if your cover is damaged, you can contact the Public Works department at 514 457-2877 to have your bin fixed at no charge. Look for the following symbols before discarding Every plastic container, bottle and packaging has an identified recycling symbol. Numbered symbols ranging from 1 to 5 and 7 are recyclable. How do I dispose of my recyclables? Recyclables can now be mixed together in the bin; no need to sort them out. It is recommended to rinse out all containers before you throw them out to prevent mold and odours. Loose plastic bags should be put into one large single one and tied. What should I do with my expired or unused medication? You must bring them back to your local pharmacy. They should never be thrown in the garbage or in the toilet as such action will have long-term adverse effects on the environment. Be vigilant and check the expiration date of your over-the-counter medication as well. This document is printed on a paper made of 100% post-consumption fibres and is recyclable. Symbol number 6 is not recyclable. Items such as padded envelopes, meat trays and some egg cartons are made of styrofoam. SEE YOUR DETACHABLE USER GUIDE! For further information on waste collection, you can contact the Baie-D Urfé Public Works department at 514 457-2877, visit our website at www.baie-durfe.qc.ca under Citizen Services or consult the www.recyc-quebec.qc.ca website for more details on recycling.
