Where and what is Friesland? Surface Area = 5.748 km² - Land = 3.341 km² 78,2% agricultural 5,2% built-up Population = 646.092 91.817 live in Leeuwarden 193 people per km² Industry: agricultural, dairy products, tourism Almost 50% of Friesland is under sea-level.

What did we have to work with? Unemployment higher than the national average Young people moving away Businesses moving away 60% of children in Leeuwarden live below the Dutch poverty line. - Royal de Luxe / Pascal Victor

What do we want to achieve? To make a better future for Friesland. And be an example to other communities, countries, governments.

Why city & countryside? Cultural, economic, social and ecological challenges. Seek new solutions in the fields of ecology, diversity and the relationship between city and countryside. Actively engage citizens. Connection, interaction, dialogue. Large-scale cultural intervention to fuel new approaches.

WHAT IS THE PROJECT? Claudy Jongstra, internationally known Frisian artist. Regeneration of an abandoned farmstead. Workshops, Open Days, Youngsters, Recycling, Plant growing, Dyeing, Chelsea Garden.

HOW DOES IT ADDRESS CULTURAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL & ECOLOGICAL CHALLENGES? Cultural & Economic: Regeneration of an abandoned farmstead, growing, baking, employment. Social: Working with kids from deprived backgrounds, regeneration of an abandoned farmstead. Ecological: Recycling, Plant growing, Working the land, Dyeing.

Sailing on the Grass What? New solutions in diversity, and the relationship between city & countryside. How? Cities and their surrounding countryside are our stage.

WHAT IS THE PROJECT? 3 documentary films by international filmmakers. #Solidarity #Identity #Sport Looking at Friesland through the eyes of others /foreigners.

HOW DOES IT SEEK NEW SOLUTIONS IN DIVERSITY, AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CITY & COUNTRYSIDE? Diversity: Cultural diversity at its core. Revealing the stories behind the headlines - how does a refugee family fit in? How does a small village cope with a refugee family? Addressing difficult issues. City & Countryside: How does a small village cope with a refugee family? Are cities a better place for refugees? What are the wider implications of immigration? Can a multi-cultural society succeed? What is the way forward?
