Regulations. The Building Regulations. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use)(Amendment) Regulations 1990. The Building Standards (Scotland) Consolidated Regulations. British Gas Publication DM2 : "Guide to gas installations in timber framed houses" (Second Edition) : 1984 Attention is drawn to the following standards: BS1251.1987 Specifications of open fireplace components. BS1945,1971 Specification for fireguards. B55258. part 12,1990 Safety of Domestic Gas Appliances. B55440,part1,1978 Codes of Practice for flues for gas appliances to 60kW BS5482,part permanent 1,1979 LPG. installations in dwellings. 956714,1986 Specification for installation of fuel effect fires. BS6891,1988 Specification of low pressure gas pipework BS8303,1986 Replacing CP403. The Strax 16 and 18 Universal trays must only be installed by a member of a class of persons approved by the Health and Safety Executive. An airbrick or similar fresh air inlet must be fitted in the room in which the fire is installed. and must April 1991 have an area not less than 100 sq.cm (15.5 sq.ln). This fresh air inlet must not be blocked or restricted in any way. INSTALLATION (A) Inspect the chimney Ensure that (1) It only serves one fireplace (2) It is clear of any obstruction, and any damper or register is removed. Any chimney used for an appliance burning a fuel other than gas must be thoroughly swept before installing any gas appliances. (4) With an L.P.G. fire. any, air supply entering the fireplace below floor level is completely sealed off. (5) The chimney is property sealed so that the combustible products do not come into contact with combustible materials outside the chimney. ( 6) The base of the chimney is clear of loose debris, bricking up, etc. Broken hearth components should be replaced or repaired as necessary. Refer to the appliance data above for minimum chimney height and flue diameter. Check with a smoke match that there is a positive updraught present in the chimney. Examine the chimney terminal and general condition of the chimney brickwork for evidence of deterioration ; do not carry out an installation to a chimney in a poor condition. it there is a history of downdraught problems examine the possibility of fitting a British Gas approved flue terminal or cowl. Always carry out a spillage test in accordance with B5 5440 Part 1, Appendix B.

(B) The Gas Tray The Strax gas tray should be located as shown in Fig.2, Locate the tray centrally in the opening. Please note that firebacks may occasionally vary from the British Standard dimensions. Securely anchor the tray in the correct position using the screws and Rawlplugs supplied: holes are provided in the front feet of the tray for this purpose, Fig.1 Nominal dimensions 16 Universal 18 Universal Width of opening A 380mm (15in.) 430mm (17in.) (A) Dimensions of Existing Fireback The Strax 16 and 18 Universal trays fit into a standard British fireback of the dimensions shown in Fig.1 (C) Hearth Fitting The Strax Universal trays must be installed on a level hearth in accordance with BS 6714. 1986. The hearth must be constructed of such a material that heat transmined through it shall not give rise to a temperature greater than 65 C (150 F) on its underside. See also approved document J 112/3 "Heat Producing Appliances" issued by the Department of the Environment, 1985. INSTALLATION OF THE TRAY Items supplied The following items should be found within the carton: 1. Tray complete with controls and burner bar. 2. Optional fret with brass finials and hinged dummy ash pan cover complete with brass ring. 3. Dispersal medium. 4. Fibre back (already attached to sloping tray back), 5. Coals and embers. 6. 2 screws with rawlplugs. 7. 1M x 8mm copper pipe. 8. These installation instructions, guarantee card and End User operating recommendations. ( 6 ) (7) ( 8) (D) Leak Test and Pressure Test (1) Turn on the main gas supply and check for leakage with suitable leak detection fluid. (2) Light the fire (see Para. G) Turn control knob to High position. (4) Extinguish the fire by returning the control knob to Off position. Turn off the gas, (5) Remove pressure test screw, and fit pressure gauge to pressure test point. Turn on the gas and relight the fire. When the control knob is in the High position, there should be a gas pressure of 20mbar indicated on the gauge. (8in.w.g.) Extinguish the fire, turn off the gas, remove pressure gauge and replace pressure test screw. (E) Final Preparation It is essential to fill the burner tray with dispersal medium to a depth of 50mm (2in_)_ Under no circumstances should any other medium than that supplied be used. Remove the coals from the bag. Place the coals in a row approximately 20mm (3/4in.) apart. about 12mm (1/2in.) from the front of the tray (See Fig. 4). Slightly offset another row behind with. a similar spacing. Place The following steps are recommended for a successful installation: (A) Gas connection A 15mm gas supply pipe with isolation cock should be brought to within 1M of the fireplace opening. the remaining coals in a pyramid fashion from front to back. DO NOT ALLOW THE COALS TO OVER- HANG THE FRONT OF THE TRAY. The ember material supplied should be teased into small fluffy particles and placed between the coals on the bottom row taking care that no material overhangs the front of the tray. The flame pattern will vary according to the position and the spacing between the coals. Arrange the coals to give a real fire appearance. avoiding long, spiky flames which are soot forming. FOR 20 SECONDS. If the pilot should fail to light. turn the control knob clockwise to the 'off position, wait 3 minutes and repeat the procedure, ( 3 ) When the pilot flame is alight the control knob should be allowed to spring out slightly. This will allow you to turn the knob further anti-clockwise to the position marked 'LOW. The pilot flame should then ignite the main fire. (4) The height of the flames can be adjusted by turning the control knob between the positions marked 'Low' and 'High'. Lran ' on Spa OFF, PILOT f H1GH tions. The full lighting procedure is as follows: (1) Push control knob in as far as possible on gas control. (2) Turn knob anti-clockwise until a click is heard. The Pilot' knob will stop at the position marked ' and a spark should be seen at the tip of the ignition probe. At the same time the pilot flame should light. KEEP THE KNOB PRESSED IN 'latches' in position at either end of this movement and must be pushed in slightly before it can be turned. (5) To turn the fire off, depress the knob slightly and turn it to the 'Pilot' position. (6 ) To completely extinguish the fire depress the knob slightly and turn to the 'Off position. (G) Check for clearance of combustion products in accordance with BS 5440 Part 1, Appendix B: (1) ( 2 ) Light the fire. Close all windows and doors. After 5-10 minutes position a smoke match at the centre of the appliance and ensure that the smoke is drawn into the flue aperture. If spillage is detected the cause must be discovered and the fault corrected, If the fault cannot be corrected, disconnect the gas supply to the appliance and seek expert advice. Possible causes of spillage are chimney restrictions or insufficient air supply to the room. MAINTENANCE Servicing should be carried out annually by a competent person in accordance with the relevant regulations, to ensure the safe and correct operation of the appliance. Before commencing any service or replacement of parts, turn off the main gas supply. After servicing check for gas soundness. 3

When ordering spare parts please quote appliance serial number. At least once a year check for debris in the flueway. If soot has accumulated ensure that the chimney is swept clean. Examine the coals for signs of cracking and replace if necessary. (7) Turn on the gas supply and check for soundness. (8) Check operation of ignition system. (2) (4) se- (5) (7) ( 8 ) REPLACEMENT OF PARTS (A) Replacement of gas valve (1) Turn off the gas supply by isolation cock. ( 9 ) Remove fret. Remove coals and dispersal medium. Remove 2 screws holding tray to hearth. Undo mutt-directional gas connection. Remove tray from fireplace. Pull off control knob. Slacken M5 screw each side of Data Badge plate and slide the plate off the screws. Disconnect all 3 gas connections to gas valve as well as the connection to the thermocouple. (10)Remove 2 screws and nuts securing the valve to the mounting bracket, and discard old valve. (11)Assemble the new valve on the mounting bracket. (12) Re-assemble the appliance in reverse order. (13)Replace dispersal medium, embers and coals (see Fig. 4). (14) Turn on the gas supply and check for soundness. (B) Replacement of injector (1) Repeat operations 1-6 for the removal of the gas (2) Remove U-shaped gas pipe from gas valve to injector. Unscrew injector and replace, making certain that the jet size stamping corresponds to the specification on the Data Badge plate. (4) Re-assemble in reverse order. (5) Turn on the gas supply and check for soundness_ (C) Replacement of pilot assembly (1) Repeat operations 1-8 for the removal of the gas (2) Disconnect thermocouple pipe from rear of gas (4) (5) Disconnect pipe from base of pilot burner tube. Pull off connector on the base of the igniter probe. Undo M5 nut on gas tray and remove ignition unit complete. Fit new ignition unit and reassemble in reverse order. (0926) 882233 Fax (0926) 450846 Registered in England No. 500091 USER INSTRUCTIONS May 1991 (To be left with the appliance) Appliance: Straxgas 16 Universal Gas Tray (Model No. G203) Straxgas 18 Universal Gas Tray (Model No. G204) IMPORTANT The appliance to which these instructions apply must be installed by a competent person approved by the Health and Safety Executive, and must be in accordance with the Installation and Servicing Instructions supplied. Servicing should be carried out annually by a competent person in accordance with the relevant regulations, to ensure the safe and correct operation of the appliance. Before installation of the appliance the chimney must be thoroughly swept. and then inspected annually to ensure that it remains clear. Should large amounts of debris appear then the chimney must be inspected and the appliance serviced before further use. When the pilot flame is alight the control knob should be allowed to spring out slightly. This will allow you to turn the knob further anti-clockwise to the position marked 'Low. The pilot flame should then ignite the main fire. (4) The height of the flames can be adjusted by turning the control knob between the positions marked 'Low and 'High'. Note that the knob latches' in position at either end of this movement and must be pushed in slightly before it can be turned. (5) To turn the fire off, depress the knob slightly and turn it to the 'Pilot' position. To completely extinguish the fire depress the knob slightly and turn to the 'Off' position. LAYOUT OF FIREBED After removal of the gas tray any soot or debris may be cleared with a vacuum cleaner if desired. The fresh air inlet to the room must be inspected periodically to ensure that it remains free of obstructions. We strongly recommend the use of a fire guard complying with 856539 or BS6778, especially if the room will be occupied by children or elderly or infirm people. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS The appliance Data Badge is positioned in front of the tray behind the fret and carries the control knob positions. The full lighting procedure is as follows: (1) (2 ) Push control knob in as far as possible on gas control. Turn knob anti-clockwise until a click is heard. The knob will stop at the position marked 'Pilot' and a spark should be seen at the tip of the ignition probe. At the same time the pilot flame should light KEEP THE KNOB PRESSED IN FOR 20 SECONDS. If the pilot should fail to light. turn the control knob clockwise to the 'off' position, wait 3 minutes and repeat the procedure. The gas tray must only be filled with the dispersal medium supplied to a depth of 50mm (2in.) Do not compress the material. The first row of coals should be placed about 20mm (3/4in.) apart and 12mm (1/2in.) from the front edge of the tray. Slightly offset another row behind, with a similar spacing. Place the remaining coals in a pyramid fashion from front to back. DO NOT ALLOW THE COALS TO OVERHANG THE FRONT OF THE TRAY. The ember material should be teased into small fluffy particles and placed between the coals on the bottom row. DO NOT LET IT OVERHANG THE FRONT OF THE TRAY. The flame pattern will vary according to the layout and spacing of the coals. We recommend a maximum of 18 coals for the type 16 Universal Tray, and 20 coals for the type 18 Universal Tray. 1
