Role of the Mountains in the Framework of Expo 2015 Paper Presented by: AMRIT RATNA SHAKYA Chairman Implementing Expert Group (IEG) Nepal Official Organizer appointed by the Government of Nepal for the country s participation at Expo 2015 Milano, Italy International Conference on Mountains and Climate Change High Summit, Lecco 2013 October 25, 2013

Theme Statement of Nepal s Participation at Expo 2015 Milano: Food Safety and Sustainability for Development

Nepal is a country of multi ethnic races, culture, languages. There are more than 100 distinct ethnic races and each ethnic race speaks their own dialects and has their own culture and staple food.

RELEVANCE OF EXPO THEME AND NEPAL Nepal, a land locked economically emerging nation, is situated in South Asia between India and China. Nepal s total land area of 147,181 sq. Km, population is 26.49 million (National Census, 2011) and Kathmandu is the Capital.

CONCEPT AND EDUCATION PLAN Because of the varied ecological conditions, topographical terrain and the resulting climatic conditions from tropical to alpine, production of wide varieties of flora and fauna is practiced and production in economic scale is feasible.

Nepal, a mountainous country, has its own age old unique farming method. Generally farming is done in hill terraces and normally all the seeds, manure are organic and of local origin.

Numbers of plants, vegetation are specific only to Nepal and are grown in Nepalese mountains. We take example of Yarshagumba ( Scientific Name: Ophiocordyceps sinensis / Family: Clavicipitaceae), an unique half plant /half insect, is widely used as aphrodisiac and is traded like hot cakes at very high prices. Nepal s rich biodiversity and agriculture/cultivation in the mountains.

Unique Nepalese experience and expertise of cultivating in the mountains and Rich Nepalese biodiversity

Sufficient, good, healthy and sustainable food for all Nepalese For this to happen, The mountains can contribute significantly and hence, the importance of the mountain, and its resources

Mountain Specificities Mountains are different from other areas in terms of food production purposes such as: Inaccessibility Biological Diversity

Inaccessibility: Slope, altitude, landslides, snow etc.

Biological Diversity and Food Production Biological diversity in the mountains acts as a positive attribute for the people and serve as the true basis for its contribution in supply of food to the mountain people

Food Production Strategy in the Mountains Emphasis to increase the production of cereal grains Improved technology for paddy, wheat, maize etc. Development of policies towards food-focus development strategy in the mountains

Balanced Agriculture and Ecosystem in the mountains Low weight, high-value products Conservation Measures Community and National Forests Conservation by non-use strategy Parks Reserves Tourism Development Adventure Sports etc.

Nepal Pavilion at Expo 2015 will also present some interesting aspects of ancient wisdom for healthy food for long and a happy life style.

Nepal is naturally blessed with endless opportunities for producing enough high nutrient natural food and materials in excess than demand, still efficient investment and management has narrowed the outcome.

Nepal is one of the popular tourist destinations in Asia. Rich cultural heritage, arts and crafts and friendly people and their festivals etc. Are the main attractions.

Nepal Pavilion at Expo 2015 will also present some interesting aspects mountain people and their cultures.

Highlights in the Expo Physical and digital exhibition of comprehensive details of specialty health food, spices, aromatic and medicinal plants and plant materials Nepali food: tradition and culture challenges and probable solutions will be showcased will also present some interesting aspects of ancient wisdom for healthy food for long and a happy life style.

Towards Future Mountain Agriculture Mountains are rich in genetic and biological diversity New concepts, priorities, and practices will be needed to develop sustainable mountain agriculture Development of mountain agriculture needs to be based on maintenance of biological diversity
