Pitch Black furniture This year, the Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition pitches the colour black as the thematic guide for the members experimental furniture. Pitch Black shadows and transparency is the title of the exhibition, which revolves around contrasts. Black lines on paper. That is the first step in the design process for most creative people. Black lines that end up as tangible furniture forms at the Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition, which has the Lapidarium of Kings as its location this year. And it is quite a location. King Christian IV s former bastion and brewhouse, which has housed a large collection of royal statues and plaster casts since 2013, is a magical place. A place with storytelling in its beams, its royal context and the more than 387 sculptures on display. This year s exhibition revolves around the contrasts between the black exhibition theme and the white sculptures at the Brewhouse. A contrast that is further emphasised by the exhibition architecture, as Norm Architects black out the Brewhouse to showcase the inherent stories in the furniture with varying light effects. Most of the furniture in the exhibition relates, directly or indirectly, to this year s theme or the exhibition venue, and Pitch Black shadows and transparency is thus not only a playful take on furniture in the twenty-first century but an exhibition that links up with the centuries-old building and the artistic tradition on display here. 48 projects are featured in this year s innovative furniture field in its stringent black design. Black like the first draft. Black like tar. Black like the colour that is both a colour and a non-colour. Black like a sliver of the shadows the furniture invariably casts in its dramatic presentation of itself and its surroundings. Among this year s innovative ideas are a site-specific piece of furniture that can be stacked high and wide to bring one on eye level with the equestrian statue; a lounger that triggers Pitch Black Press
contrasting physical body sensations, because the head is lower than the legs; and a very, very long bench. Sustainability is another key theme for many, in the form of natural coloration by fire, organic textile and upcycled materials as well as a unique invention based on natural waste products. The Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition is proud once more to present some of Denmark s leading designers and manufacturers, who work together to create furniture without a commercial agenda. Furniture for a new future. In material. In form. In storytelling. The Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition opens on 29 September at The Lapidarium of Kings in central Copenhagen. We look forward to seeing you at the press showing that same day at 15.00. Sign up here: se@se-design.dk Best regards, Claus Mølgaard and Karin Carlander 3

About the Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition The Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition (SE) is a noncommercial association of currently 87 furniture manufacturers and designers that renew and enrich Danish furniture culture in an annual event based on collaborative projects. The association s board handles management and fundraising and defines the annual thematic exhibition contexts, which vary widely and help drive the projects in new and unforeseen directions. The members of the Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition team up for the thematic task in pairs based on their own choice or defined by the board. Each year, new designers are represented, as anyone can apply to take part in the Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition as a guest designer. The annual presentations by the Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition are held in varying exhibition venues, just as press photography, graphic expression and exhibition design are regularly placed in new hands. This organic flow keeps the association moving forward with a team of leading professionals within their respective fields. The Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition has become a vital platform for the development and exposure of contemporary Danish furniture design and a talent zone for both emerging and established designers who once a year create new innovative furniture types in a playful and experimental process in cooperation with a manufacturer. In other words, Danish Design is a renewed brand with rich traditions rooted in the association s annual exhibitions. 5 SE projects in production 2014 Baba, Iskos-Berlin, Versus 2013 Babel, Philip Bro, Fredericia Furniture A/S 2013 Cover Chair, Thomas Bentzen, Muuto 2011 Ask, Thomas Bentzen, Muuto
