Code Provision 130.1(a) 130.1(b) 130.1(c) 130.1(c)5/6/7 130.1(d) Minimum Control Requirement Local Manual Switch Multi-Level Control Shut-Off Sensor Shut-Off Daylight Zones Title 24-2016 Code Requirements Code Description Luminaires must be controlled with accessible manual on/off local control. Each space and area enclosed by ceiling-height partitions must be independently controlled. Lighting of any enclosed area 100 sqft or larger more than one luminaire and a load >0.5 watts per sqft should provide multi-level lighting control that meets uniformity requirements in accordance with table 130.1-A. Lighting control can not override local on/off or any other control requirements. Lighting must be controlled by either 1) an occupant sensing control, 2) automatic time-switch control with 2 hour maximum override and holiday scheduling, or 3) other control capable of automatically shutting off lighting. Indoor shut-off zones must be separated using ceiling high partitions and can be no larger than one floor with a maximum of 5,000 sq. ft. Occupant Sensing Controls are required to shut off all lighting. Full or partial off to at least 50% via occupant sensing controls is required. Automatic daylighting controls should be installed and configured in all daylit zones as defined by 130.1(d). Lighting controls should have multilevel functionality to at least the number of control steps defined in Title 24 Table 130.1-A. 4
Title 24-2016 Code Requirements Code Provision 130.1(e) 135.1(d) Minimum Control Requirement Demand Response Ready Multi-Level Control Code Description Buildings >10,000 square feet with a lighting power density 0.5 watts per square foot are required to receive a standards-based messaging protocol, which automatically reduces lighting power by at least 15% and remains consistent with uniform illumination requirements defined in Title 24 Table 130.1-A. 50% of receptacles are required to automatically turn off based on occupancy or after a vacancy of 20 minutes or less. Each uncontrolled receptacle must have at least one controlled receptacle within 6 feet. TABLE 130.1-A MULTI-LEVEL LIGHTING CONTROLS AND UNIFORMITY REQUIREMENTS Luminaire Type Minimum Required Control Steps Uniform level of illuminance shall be achieved by: LED luminaires and LED source systems Continuous dimming 10-100 percent 5
Small Private Office (<250 sq. ft.) Code Requirements and Compliance Method: Use of a momentary switch or a slide dimmer complies with the requirement for a local manual switch. Multi-level control is accomplished either by using occupancy sensors with dimming capability in combination with a momentary switch or a nondimming occupancy sensor with a slide dimmer. Sensor shut off is accomplished by using an occupancy sensor. The occupancy sensor turns the lights off after the area is vacated. Receptacle control is achieved by using a second power pack with a built-in timer or using a sensor with two outputs to a second power pack independent from lighting. 6

Public Restroom Code Requirements and Compliance Method: Local manual switch can be complied with by using a momentary switch. Multi-level control is accomplished by using occupancy sensors with dimming capability in combination with a momentary switch. Sensor shut off is accomplished by using an occupancy sensor. The occupancy sensor turns the lights off after a set time period after the occupants left the area. It s recommended to use the dim before off feature of the dimming sensors for restrooms. 8

Open Office Areas / Lobby Code Requirements and Compliance Method: Local manual switch can be complied with by using either a momentary switch or a slide dimmer. Multi-level control is accomplished by using occupancy sensors with dimming capability in combination with a momentary switch. Sensor shut off is accomplished by using an occupancy sensor. The occupancy sensor turns the lights off after the area is vacated. Receptacle control is achieved by using a second a power pack with a built-in timer or using a sensor with two outputs and a second power pack. Daylight responsive control may be required for these areas as per the criteria set by the code. This requirement can be complied with by placing sensors in primary, secondary and general lighting zones and set sensors in each zone according to code requirements. Daylight responsive control on sensors in primary and/or secondary daylight zone and normal operation on sensors in the general lighting zone. 15
