Modus. The aesthetics of sitting. There is hardly any item of furniture that we use longer and more intensively than an office chair. To make sitting at the desk as simple, healthy and high quality as possible this has been one of Wilkhahn s prime tasks for several decades: ergonomically correct sitting is first and foremost a question of movement. Aesthetic sitting is a question of sophisticated, intelligent details and a consistent overall impression. The two designers, Klaus Franck and Werner Sauer, who had already created a worldwide model of excellence for dynamic sitting with the FS-Line, developed a chair in collaboration with the wiege design studio which perfects dynamic sitting and sets new standards in terms of design and engineering. Modus implies a way of doing things. In this case, the name stands for the successful interplay of form, function and ergonomics. Special attention has been paid to the design of the Modus backrest, which comprises a viscoelastic, flexible frame with an air permeable, supporting material. Without any additional cushions, the backrest alone offers optimal support due to its form and the supple kind of material used for users of varying heights, for any posture and for any phase of sitting. Extensive design and development input and finely honed features provide a convincing result: Modus intelligence instead of quantity for dynamic sitting with perfect form. 3
Modus. Design and ergonomics. Modus meets all current requirements for ergonomic, healthy sitting with great efficiency and unique simplicity: once adjusted to the user s weight and individual height, the automatic synchro-adjustment always ensures correct adjustment to any movement and change in posture. The heart of the construction consists of two swivel plates in die-cast aluminium, which, together with the compact automatic synchro-adjustment, form the chassis of every Modus swivel chair. The optional semi-transparent fabric of the backrest, with characteristic side openings, provides pleasant ventilation, supports the important region of the lumbar vertebra and adjusts to any shape of back without losing its flexibility. The tension of the backrest may be adjusted to individual body weight by means of a central handwheel. The adjustment levers, which are conveniently located underneath the front of the seat on the right and left, are for adjustment of the seat height and locking the backrest in the 0 position. Modus characteristic backrest is produced in a special manufacturing process as a frame that is open towards the top without any bracing. This backrest frame, that is both flexible and unbreakable, across which is stretched viscoelastic material, is optionally available with nontransparent or semi-transparent fabric, or with additional upholstery and underlay. The contours of the armrests, which run parallel to those of the backrest and the seat platform, underline the clarity of Modus design. The seat has also been designed with a focus on ergonomics: it is simply mounted onto the chassis together with the pelvic wedge as a pelvic support, which is raised towards the backrest, and screwed in place. This allows the seat to shift and tilt in the correct ratio, synchronously with the movement of the backrest without any mechanism that is complicated and prone to wear. In the housing of the automatic synchro-adjustment, the swivel plates are operated via four torsion rods each, which ensure maximum comfort for the user when leaning back: as the pressure of the backrest increases, there is never the feeling of toppling over backwards in any phase of movement. 4
Every detail of Modus is geared to maximum simplicity, perfect, timeless design and enduring quality: the various sub-assemblies such as the seat, backrest and frame can be easily exchanged with only very few screws. This means almost unlimited usage.
Modus Basic Swivel chairs and visitor s chairs of the Modus Basic line, with a backrest in black, viscoelastic polypropylene are ideal in a work and training environment. 263/7 Modus Compact The characteristic feature of the Modus Compact line is the backrest comprising a glass fibre-reinforced frame with a supporting stretch material in black polyamide, optionally in a non-transparent or semi-transparent version. The backrests are available in three different heights. The wide variety of Compact models available allows diversified and coordinated furnishing solutions for office workplaces, meeting areas and conference rooms. 275/7 274/7 Modus Medium The spacious models of the Modus Medium line offer a wide variety of upholstery options: ranging from semi-transparent, stretch material on the backrest frame, through a fabric cover with an underlay to sophisticatedly finished leather upholstery. Versatile sitting. 277/7 266/7 276/7 The modular structure of Modus allows a versatile chair family: all areas of a company from reception, through office and management areas to training and conference environments can be furnished in a distinct, coherent design language and with consistently high comfort. The matching cantilever models and the four-legged visitor s chairs bear the typical Modus signature on the seat and the backrests. The wide selection of Wilkhahn textiles and leather, frame finishes in powder coating, polished aluminium, matt or bright chromiumplated, as well as upholstery options, cover almost all needs in terms of design and comfort. For cantilever models, there is also a choice of materials and finishes for the armrest pads. Due to its simple, ergonomically well-developed concept, Modus promotes healthy sitting without taxing the user s attention. Optionally, Modus Basic and Compact models may also be fitted with height-adjustable armrests, as well as a height-adjustable lumbar support, integrated into the backrest. Modus: Sitting with ease, wherever I am. Today, globalization and worldwide economic networking require companies and their employees to exhibit a high degree of flexibility in their organizational structures. The days when employees sit on the same chair all their working life are finally over. More than ever before, simple, automatic adjustment of office chairs to the physiognomy of different users is the order of the day: comfort should be adjustable ad hoc wherever I want to sit at this moment. In a two-month project group layout, in a team office for an undefined period of time or in an office for two until the next company restructuring occurs Modus office chairs stand firm as times and users change: take a seat, adjust the height and then concentrate fully on your work. The chair itself will take care of concerns about healthy sitting by supporting the user s room to manoeuvre in the most optimal manner. The furnishing of a manager s office also signals the style of management culture. Today, modern management backs the motivation of its employees to an increasing extent by means of a cooperative style of management. Furniture with an understated design, due to intelligent functionality, is more suitable than symbols of power. This furnishing layout works well with the swivel chair 284/81 and the cantilever chair 287/81 from the Modus Executive line, the spacious Logon table 625/41 and the Conrack lectern 900/22.

In principle, different rules do not have to apply even to those areas where responsibility and decision-making competence can be found in its most concentrated form. The luxurious features of the Modus models of the Executive line make them suitable for the representational duties of those with top responsibility there is no need to disregard the normal human desire of a manager for healthy sitting and the pleasant pick-up effect of movement when sitting, even at the highest level. Furniture can make a contribution to a positive work climate, besides its pure, basic function: if management and staff can find models which suit individual needs in such an extensive and finely tuned furniture range as the Modus family, this will certainly mark a corporate culture that, in spite of diversity, strives to promote basic common interests. 11
Modus in conference: Move instead of sitting it out. The time that management now spends in meetings or in the conference room is continually on the increase. In situations where prestige in the conference room is a self-evident expression of corporate style and approach, the key factor is not quantity but suitabillity. The spacious Modus swivel chairs from the Executive model group provide a convincing solution. A high degree of ergonomic comfort, combined with design quality, achieves a perfect synthesis of attention to luxurious details and an understated, elegant appearance. The models with glides have a symmetrical, four-star base. They are optionally available either with seat and backrest with automatic synchro-adjustment or with a classically elegant, die-cast aluminium underframe.
