Copenhagen Sustainability Lecture Per Pinstrup-Andersen & Finn Tarp: Sustainable Development in a Period of Climate Change 31st of January 2011 Dias 1

Why Sustainability Science? Universities and researchers have an important role in addressing and dealing with the enormous challenges the world and its societies are facing in order to ensure a sustainable development. These challenges are among others: To ensure the availability of food, water and energy for the world s population, To ensure stability of the ecosystems which our livelihood depends upon, To ensure that biodiversity does not further decline, To reduce poverty and inequality. If these challenges are to be addressed, collaboration across many disciplines is necessary in order to build knowledge and point to solutions. And that is what sustainability science is all about. Dias 2

Research within climate and sustainability are areas the University of Copenhagen wishes to emphasize and make more visible. It is a task which the new Sustainability Science Center is to contribute to as the center is to stimulate climate and sustainability research at the university. Furthermore the Center is to coordinate some of the many activities that already take place at the faculties. The Climate Strategy of Univ. of Copenhagen, 2010 Dias 3
