MSc1 American Embassy Nol Hermkens Code AR1AR011 Credits 12 ECTS Location Den Haag From fortress to public building Adapting 20 C Heritage In 1959 the embassy, designed by Marcel Breuer, was built at the corner of the Korte Voorhout and the Lange Voorhout in The Hague. This was the place of the old Hotel Paulez that was bombed during WOII. The new embassy consist of two rectangular volumes with each a separate monumental entrance. The volumes are connected by a transparent corridor and in the courtyard an independent auditorium is added. Because of safety reasons the embassy was moved to Wassenaar and so the building became vacant. The focus of the design assignment is to create more liveliness on this significant location at the border of the inner city of The Hague. The aim is to attract people by giving the building a public program. So the plot would become more part of the urban live. A possible function is a hotel in combination with a museum (the Escher Museum). An alternative function is a new department of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs of the University of Leiden. In both cases the building has to adapt to modern standards. The student has to substantiate proposed interventions in relation to the monumental values. AR1AR010-3 ects Methodologies of Architectural Reuse AR1AR080-3 ects Technology of Conservation

Heritage & Architecture MSc1 Hembrug Cathedral Wouter Willers Living and working in a secluded place Revitalising Heritage Students will research the impact of living and working in an old industrial area. AR1AR010-3 ects Methodologies of Architectural Reuse AR1AR080-3 ects Technology of Conservation Code Credits Location Excursion Costs The Hembrug area, between Amsterdam and Zaandam, is a unique landscape occupied with many listed buildings. The former military site is at the moment one of the biggest redevelopment locations in The Netherlands. Special is the woodland that embraces the factories. The site is part of a sequence of redevelopment of industrial areas adjacent to the North Sea Channel starting with the NDSM Warf and Houthavens in Amsterdam. After 1895 the area has always been used for the production of ammunition and since then the development of the site witnesses different architectural styles. AR1AR011 12 ECTS Zaandam Yes - A special and attractive work- and residential neighbourhood with a green heart and with a prominent role for the listed buildings will be developed in the Hembrug area. The studio will focus and work on The Cathedral, a building ensemble close to the centre of the area.

MSc2 Durable Neighbourhoods Lidy Meijers Code AR0681 Credits 12 ECTS Location Arnhem Interventions in changing residential areas Adapting 20 C Heritage Around 1965 the neighbourhood of Presikhaaf was completed according to the ideas of the CIAM of living, working, leisure and education.the residential districts around the shopping centre and the park create a unique spatial composition. The character of the districts differs by typology, density and orientation. Nowadays the area experiences a significant transformation as a result of the change of social demands and requirements. This renewal of certain areas and the shopping mall influences not only the spatial composition but also the social economic setting. For different reasons some of the commercial and social properties have become vacant in the residential areas. The design assignment is the adaptation of a specific architectural ensemble or building in the neighbourhood. The design is strongly related to contextual research, defining values concerning historical traces, common narratives and multiple identities of places, the architectural layers of time in built structures, as well as present conditions to create durable future use. Heritage & Architecture MSc2 Religious Heritage Alexander de Ridder Code Credits Location Excursion Costs AR0681 12 ECTS Gelderland Yes - Conversion of vacant churches Revitalising Heritage In the coming years the province of Gelderland will experience vacancy of religious heritage. Monasteries, churches and other buildings cannot make a solid exploitation due to the decline in number of church visitors. On the other hand people in villages and cities value the buildings in their context and are aware of the significance of these building types. In the cities of Tiel, Arnhem and Zutphen four different churches are selected for this design course. For all the churches the context varies, one is in a park setting, another is part of a dense urban fabric. New activities can be developed or daily live can take place in a new design. What could be a new inspiring program and the translation of it in a specific setting? What can be an innovative or sustainable strategy? The design assignment is the transformation of one of the selected characteristic churches. It is based on a contextual research, architectural analysis, including a cultural historical assessment on all levels of scale. MSc3/4 Hembrug Peninsula Lidy Meijers Code AR3AH110 Credits 15 ECTS Location Zaandam New life for a military complex Revitalising Heritage There is a large scale redevelopment going on Zaandam, fuelled by its proximity to Amsterdam. Next to the bank of the Noordzeekanaal a number of new districts will be created. One of the them, the Hembrug area, has been a military area for a long time and has now become vacant. The green location has the atmosphere of a campus with numerous historical buildings. The area will be densified with new dwellings and enterprises. The new development follows other contemporary developments in the North of Amsterdam such as the NDSM Werf and Houthavens. The focus of the graduation project is how contemporary and future demands for a prosperous city life can be translated into appropriate interventions. How existing physical structures and new design layers can reinforce each other creating an attractive living and working environment. Choosing a building ensemble on the site and developing a specific program is part of the assignment. Understanding the existing site through research is a prerequisite for any proposal. How can the past be an inspirational tool for the future? MSc3/4 Flevopolder Revisited Lidwine Spoormans Code AR3AH100 Credits 15 ECTS Location Flevoland Tomorrow s Heritage Adapting 20 C Heritage In the first half of the 20th century, the Dutch created Flevoland. The Netherlands youngest province is usually associated with new, innovative and no history, however, since the first inhabitants settled there 75 years ago, more than 400,000 have followed. The land of engineering, ideals and future, now has its own history and needs to start relating to the built heritage, as a tangible expression of its exceptional past. The social composition of neighbourhoods, educational concepts, infrastructural systems, housing typologies, agricultural methods, soil quality, building methods: everything was designed on this new artificial land. State of the art projects from this past can be studied as the laboratory of modern developments of The Netherlands. Flevoland still remains a breeding ground for architectural experimentation through such projects such as Oosterwold by MVRDV. But new challenges in the province confront us with questions around its transformation. Which experiments from the past prooved to be successful and how do we deal with failures? Is the narrative of new land and innovation the cultural historical value or should we protect architectural and urban products as monuments? In this studio, we will study heritage and future challenges of several locations of Flevoland, each with its specific contemporary needs. After an in-depth analysis, students will work on a relevant design brief, programmatic scenarios and create a proposal. Heritage centre Batavialand, the municipalities of Almere, Lelystad and Noordoostpolder and other experts are involved in the organisation of the studios.
