PROPOSED GARDEN ROOM PLANS
CONCEPTUAL RESPONSE CONCEPTUAL RESPONSE The initial concept for the garden room was to be a sheltering tree within the new garden providing protection from the wind and rain as well as offering shade. The building also opens up in section at its perimeter to help increase the view out. The roof has been designed to modulate the climate by providing dapled shade as well as being isulated. The roof has also been considered as a rain collector and could be used to help irrigate the new garden. KEY : dappled light : open up to views 3: shelter : coming together 3 The building will exploit natural ventilation, passive solar gain as well as low energy underfloor heating to provide a pleasant environment all year round. APPEARANCE The building has been conceived as a building sheltering under an independent roof. This approach translates the idea of sheltering under a tree into a built form. The roof (canopy) provides shelter from the elements whilst modulating the climate and the daylight. The roof is separated from the walls by continuous glazing. This helps reinforce the idea of the canopy being a separate element to the walls. The walls have a number of functions. They are retaining structures, hide views, provide controlled views, open up to allow access, provide locations for plants to grow as well as incorporating storage. The primary material for the construction of the garden room is to be timber, both internally and externally as well as glass and steel. The approach to the material treatment is to use natural mateials, untreated and as much as possible in their natural state. The flooring is to be a continuation of the external bonded gravel. This should result in a beautiful building that feels at home in a garden environment whilst providing a robust finish that should require low maintenance. SUSTAINABILITY SUSTAINABILITY The approach to sustainability has been to design an adaptable proposal that can easily accept sustainable add ons at a later date without affecting or compomising the original design. What can be achieved initially will be dependant upon funding. Add On s to include: Rainwater harvesting either above or below ground Photovoltaic cells Air source heat pumps Wind turbines 3 KEY : rainwater harvesting : photovoltaic cells 3: air source heat pumps : wind turbines 5: low temperature underfloor heating 5 Sketch Showing How Potential Sustainable Technology Can be Incorporated Horatio s Garden Design and Access Statement August 06
FLOOD RISK FLOOD RISK The site is not within a flood risk zone. The proposals are therefore not affected by the presence of a flood zone. Plan Showing Site In Relation To Flood Zone
