BUNNINGS PRICING TO STAY THE SAME You ll be aware there has been discussion within clubs and with Bunnings regarding a price increase for the Bunnings barbecues. We now have formal advice from Bunnings Managing Director that there will be no price increase. He acknowledged Rotary s good work and the community contributions made throughout Australia. Bunnings does value our relationship. Equally he reminded us that they have a long list of organisations that would like to take our place holding the barbecues. It is important we now respect Bunnings decision and that our actions continue to strengthen the relationship with Bunnings and the reputation of Rotary. I m sure the will. No cash, no freedom? The cashless society, eh? "Every time someone talks about getting rid of cash, they are talking about getting rid of your freedom. Every time they actually limit cash, they are limiting your freedom. It does not matter if the people doing it are wonderful Scandinavians or Hindu supremacist Indians, they are people who want to know and control what you do to an unprecedentedly fine-grained scale." Yep, just because someone cool is doing it doesn t mean it won t have bad consequences. In the rush to add technology to things, we create future dystopias. "Cash isn t completely anonymous. There s a reason why old fashioned crooks with huge cash flows had to money-launder: Governments are actually pretty good at saying, Where d you get that from? and getting an explanation. Still, it offers freedom, and the poorer you are, the more freedom it offers. It also is very hard to track specifically, i.e., who made what purchase. Blockchains won t be untaxable. The ones which truly are unbreakable will be made illegal; the ones that remain, well, it s a ledger with every transaction on it, for goodness sakes." It s this bit that concerns me: "We are creating a society where even much of what you say, will be knowable and indeed, may eventually be tracked and stored permanently. If you do not understand why this is not just bad, but terrible, I cannot explain it to you. You have some sort of mental impairment of imagination and ethics." Folks, many of you will be aware of the NEW Rotary International mantra People of Action. You will have seen pics displayed in publications and on social media that look like this: RI have made available a toolkit to enable you to develop these images using pics of your choosing say from your Club or local Community events. This initiative provides an opportunity to deliver a consistent message to our community and it certainly describes we Rotarians The tool kit can be found in the Brand Centre on the RI website after logging into My Rotary To assist with this procedure I have prepared a short How to Tutorial if you need a assistance Click below to view. (Set as full screen and HD resolution if need be) https://vimeo.com/253067031 I hope you find this of assistance Regards Ian Cameron District 9685 Public Relations Director 2017/2018 E: IanCameron@rotarydistrict9685.org.au M: 0411240513 The Rotary Club of The Entrance Page 8
This is Judy Palmer s boot. She is able to use it to keep Alan on his toes, at least for a while. She has to wear it to bed as well so it proves useful for getting Alan up to make the morning cup of tea. Hope everything goes well and you can shed this extra weight soon. George Orwell, the author, said this many years ago (He wrote the fatalistic novel 1984 in 1949) I may be a cynic but I don t think much has changed THE FOUR WAY TEST Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? We thank our Sponsors The Rotary Club of The Entrance Page 10
