Air Sampling Overview Evaluated airborne concentrations of particulate matter in interior and exterior locations throughout CSUSM campus. Established a Clearance Criteria (50 ug/m3 8-hour Average) for occupancy of CSUSM buildings as a Best Management Practice. Criteria based on EPA standards, industry guidelines, and Cal/OSHA regulations.

Measurements Taken PM10 All particles less than 10 um in aerodynamic diameter Particles capable of bypassing the body s natural defenses in the nose and throat and entering the lungs When inhaled these particles can increase the number and severity of asthma attacks and cause or aggravate bronchitis and other lung diseases PM2.5 All particles less than 2.5 um in aerodynamic diameter These particles penetrate deeper than PM10 particles. They have a strong association with circulatory disease and increased mortality.

Measurements Taken - Continued Respirable Nuisance Dust Cal/OSHA occupational exposure limit. Maximum allowable concentration that is considered safe for an employee to be exposed to 8-hours per day for 40-hours a week for a 40-year work life without a statistically significant increase in adverse health affect.

Instrumentation PM10/PM2.5 Monitor Respirable Nuisance Dust

Results Clearance provided based on measurements: PM10 75 locations Below threshold (PASS) PM2.5 11 locations Above and below threshold (Acceptable) Respirable Nuisance Dust 12 locations 100 times below the Cal/OSHA PEL (PASS)

Indoor Air Quality Investigations Preliminary figures have the cost at 17K for 1-2 CIH s and one tech. Full campus sampling (direct and grab samples). The goal was in building clearance. During the week of 10/29-11/2 we had nine internal IAQ investigations and 1 Worker s Compensation case not related to the campus IAQ situation.
