Open Gates A publication of the Gates Cactus & Succulent Society May 2013 NEXT MEETING, WEDNESDAY, May 1, NEW TIME! 7:00 PM AT THE SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY MUSEUM I- 10 AT CALIFORNIA STREET IN REDLANDS, CA. Sweepstakes Winner April Plants of the Month: Cacti: Best Staged Cactus Succulents: Best Staged Succulent Speaker: Joe Wujcik Plant Staging for Show Learn from the Masters: Show Etiquette Save These Dates: May 4 Gates Spring Home Tour May 17 & 18 Gates Show & Sale Green Faire June 1 & 2 San Diego C&SS Show & Sale June 8 & 9 Los Angeles C&SS Show & Sale From the President: It is that time of year again when the weather warms up and our plants and trees start to vigorously grow. Horticultural oriented activities pick up and our lives get busier. Not only are we busy with our own plants and gardens but plant Shows & Sales are mostly held during summer months and it is a prime time for Home & Garden tours and visits to botanical gardens. Our club calendar is no different and there are a number of interesting activities you might want to work into your own calendar schedule. On Thursday. April 25 th you might want to stop by and visit our club information booth at the Redlands Market Night. There is plenty to see and some good eats and shopping available. Anytime between 7:00 & 9:00pm is good. Saturday May 4 th will be Home Tours terminating in Rob Roy McGregors beautiful backyard with what promises to be a tasty meal. More about this elsewhere in this newsletter and at our next regular meeting. May 17th & 18 th will be our own club annual Show & Sale at the Jurupa Discovery Center. This is the major fund raising event of our club and we depend on it for the bulk of the money that finances our activities throughout the year. It has always been a successful event but it depends on your participation. I hope all of you will pitch in to make this year an even bigger and more successful event than in the past. There is no reason you cannot be one of those who takes home a winners ribbon, trophy plaque or a newly acquired plant that will be next year s winner. Read more about this important event elsewhere in this month s newsletter. Sometime following the upcoming Show & Sale, probably June 1 st, or 2 nd we will have the usual show wrap up meeting to critique and discuss the show. This year we are thinking of having it at the McGrew home and combining it with an open house party for all club members. Of course there will be plenty of Mary Alice s good cooking available if we finalize such a plan. There will be more information about this later. From the President Con t. Tentative plans for a group visit to Lotus Land in Santa Barbara has not drawn much response, so far, and we will need to make a decision about this event, scheduled for August of this year, soon if we are going to make it happen. If you want to do this visit to Lotus Land you need to signup NOW. I want to thank all those members who responded to my call last month for participation in the volunteer activities that support our club. Things like helping in the kitchen, volunteering with set up and cleanup of our annual Show & Sale site, bringing a nice plant for the raffle table, etc. etc. Speaking of the raffle table, I understand that ticket sales were over $90.00 last month and I believe that is the best ever. Congratulate yourselves. Our club promotional activities, at other peoples events, is ongoing and recently we had a very well visited booth at the Earth Day event sponsored by the Western Regional Water District and, of course, we are committed to continuing participation every month or so at the Redlands Market Night. If you know of any upcoming event where we could participate, with a club information booth, please make me or another board member aware of it. Joe is also a long time master exhibitor of specimen plants at C&S shows. He will bring his expertise to us. He wants us to bring our plants that we would like to have staged and he will demonstrate best practices for presenting your show plant at its best for our upcoming Show and Sale. Mini Show Judging for 2013 Your Board of Directors has agreed that we try a new system of judging for 2013. It will require that two assistant judges be selected each month to help judge the mini show. There will be a sign up sheet at every meeting until it is filled. You may volunteer to help with the judging on plant genera that interest you, so you may learn more and contribute your knowledge Editor s Note: This is a sampling of what we will create after the Learning from the Masters classes at the beginning of each meeting. This is not the entire document. Look for it on your Gates Web Page www.gatescss.org click on Learn from the Masters: Learn From the Masters Summary Pruning Cacti and other Succulents We will first discuss Productive Pruning. There are also other reasons to prune Cacti and Succulents, and they will be addressed at a later time and then added to this subject summary. Bonsai pruning, overgrown landscape cleaning and cleaning up show plants are possible additions. We all understand that plants, including Cactus & Succulents, can be grown from seed. Experienced growers know that many plants, and especially Cacti, can also be grown from cuttings. And many of us know that the pups or offshoots that form around the perimeter of many succulents can be removed from the mother plant and grown as a separate plant. The methods of selecting or making cuttings for propagation are many and varied. We will probably not be able to cover them all in this summary. For instance, many Agaves when they flower will produce bulbils on the flower stalk. These can simply be removed and planted like a seedling. A number of succulents, such as Senecios, Crassulas, and all Opuntia will reproduce from a single pad/leaf. Often just laying the leaf onto well drained soil will cause it to root and produce a new plant.
