Friday Fast Facts February 26, 2016 Volume 4 Issue 4 On Wednesday, February 24, 2016, the Titusville Police Department attended the Florida Accreditation Commission meeting in St. Augustine where they were officially granted their second reaccreditation. Chief Lau, Commander Hutchinson, Lieutenant King, Accreditation Manager Stacey Woodward along with City Manager Larese and Assistant City Manager Abbate were all in attendance for the Commission board review and plaque presentation. Accreditation ensures that a law enforcement agency is using Best Practices in law enforcement and increases the department s ability to prevent and control crime through more effective and efficient delivery of law enforcement services to the community. City Clerk s Office: On February 12, 2016, the Student Advisory Council hosted the 2016 Student Leadership Seminar at Parrish Medical Center. Approximately 39 students from Astronaut and Titusville High Schools and the North Brevard Home School Association attended as guests. The day included a blend of inspirational speeches by local community leaders and an interactive activity that required the students to work together to create hypothetical social media campaigns on topics important to the Student Advisory Council. The Student Advisory Council is very appreciative and grateful to the many volunteers and donations from local sponsors that helped make their event a huge success! Additionally, the City Clerk s Office would like to give special thanks to several City staff that made the seminar possible, including Rick Story of the Information Technology Department, Natural Resources Planner Eddy Galindo, Police Sergeant Victor Rodriguez, and Fire and Emergency Services Battalion Chief EMS/Training Greg Sutton. Neighborhood Services during the months of December 2015 and January 2016, the department processed six applications for the Housing Rehab Program resulting in two emergency roof contracts, one rehab contract, and one rebuild contract; with the remaining two applicants being unresponsive. Neighborhood Services on December 4, 2015, staff attended a North Brevard Coordinated Response to Homeless meeting hosted by the Brevard Homeless Coalition and North Brevard Charities. This meeting began the first phase in the development of the Housing First model Plan for Titusville and Brevard County. Neighborhood Services on December 9, 2015 staff hosted a Senior Care Fair at the Harry T. Moore Social Service Center. This event provided valuable information on services to our senior citizens. The City of Titusville retained Redevelopment Management Associates (RMA) through RFP#15-P-060 in December 2015 to complete an Economic Development Strategic Plan for the City of Titusville. RMA held an open house and input session on February 24 th with live presentations at 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM. RMA will be sending out Residential and Business surveys in the coming weeks. On February 11, 2016, Titusville Fire & Emergency Services Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore attended the Government Affairs Alignment a meeting focused on Partnering with Local Municipalities and Agencies to Develop a Strategic Plan for Brevard Public Schools. The input gathered in the meeting will help align processes in meaningful ways designed to mutually benefit the citizens we all serve. Discussed were the priorities facing constituents and providing solutions that will build a stronger partnership between the district and the community. On Tuesday, February 25, 2016, Students at Park Avenue Christian Academy donated stuffed animals to the Titusville Police Department. The toys will be carried in officer patrol cars and given to children during a crisis to help ease the child s stress. These small tokens will bring a smile to a frightened child and give them something comforting to hug. Moore Social Service Center. This annual event provides hands-on assistance to citizens looking for services from local and national service providers for such things as Food Stamps, Medicaid, Hospice, Job Training, Job Placement, Counseling, Health Screening, Youth Services, Child Care, and many other valuable services. Presbyterian Church Fellowship Dinner. It was a cold, rainy night outside, but inside the First Presbyterian fellowship hall, there were warm smiles, lots of laughter, and plenty of questions during the presentation by Maureen Phillips, Water Resources Water Conservation and Public Outreach Manager. The presentation, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Water but Were Afraid to Ask, focused on the wide variety of programs and services offered by Titusville s Conservation Program. The presentation also covered topics including current water issues in the news, water treatment, and reclaimed water. Ms. Phillips was invited to speak at the dinner, which is held jointly by both the First Presbyterian and St. Luke s Presbyterian churches monthly during the fall and spring to learn about current events and issues in the Titusville area. Although presentations at the dinners usually last twenty to thirty minutes, the participation was so lively that the conservation presentation lasted for over two hours with the audience actively engaged in the question and answer session. The thirty-something attendees learned about saving water in both their homes and yards and the initiatives that the Conservation Program offers to help achieve those savings. Participants also received a variety of educational items related to conservation including irrigation restriction schedules, shower timers, native wildflower seeds, dog waste bags, and Florida-Friendly landscaping information. On February 11, 2016, Titusville Fire & Emergency Services visited Titusville High School s Health Science Class. Station 11 s crew consisted of Lieutenant Lisa Ford, Driver Operator John Hustoles and Firefighter Desmond Russo. Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore coordinated the event. The topics discussed with the students were their careers as Firefighters, Fire Safety, to include how to evacuate a facility and the proper use of Fire Extinguishers. 51 students attended the event to include adults. On February 16, 2016, Titusville Fire & Emergency Services Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore visited one of the Culinary Arts Classes at Madison Middle School. Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore spoke with the students on Fire Safety While in the Kitchen. Topics discussed were what to do if there was a grease fire, what to do if your oven catches on fire, how to prevent microwave fires and more. Students were then given an example on when to use a Fire Extinguisher and taught the method of Pull pin, Aim at base of fire, Squeeze handle, and Sweep side-to-side (P.A.S.S.) from a distance of at least six feet. A total of 30 students and teachers attended. On February 9, 2016, Titusville Fire & Emergency Services visited Astronaut High School Health Science Class to talk about careers in the Fire Service. Station 10 s crew consisted of Lieutenant Jeremy House, Acting Driver Brian Moss and Firefighter Dustin Davis. Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore assisted with the event. The students were informed of education requirements, importance of a good driving record and more. The firefighters discussed why they chose a career in the Fire Service and what led them to that path. The students then went outside for an engine display. A total of 29 students and teachers participated in the event. Neighborhood Services The following services were provided by the department at the Harry T. Moore Social Service Center during the months of December 2015 and January 2016: Bread Program- 381 citizens participated and was provided bread products Community Dinner Program- 273 hot meals were served Daily Clients 554 citizens utilized the Center and its services Social Services 57 citizens were assisted with obtaining or applying for local, state, and federal services such as Food Stamps, Medicaid, Social Security, etc. Neighborhood Services on February 24, 2016, demolition began on the Housing Replacement project located at 2306 Anna Drive, funded by the SHIP grant program. This is the first phase of the project with groundbreaking expected in early February on the new home. Page 4 of 6

Page 5 of 6 On February 9, 2016, Titusville Fire & Emergency Services visited the Indian River Lodge to provide a class on Cooking Safety. Station 11 s crew consisted of Acting Lieutenant Shawn Holbrook, Acting Driver Operator Roman Lane and Firefighter Dana Hersey. Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore assisted with the event. Topics discussed were what to do if there was a grease fire, what to do if your oven catches on fire, how to prevent microwave fires and more. Other possible fire hazards throughout the home were also discussed including the life expectancy of a Smoke Alarm and where members can go to get help with Smoke Alarms. 20 individuals attended the event.

On February 18, 2016, Titusville Fire & Emergency Services personnel visited with one of the Culinary Arts Classes at Madison Middle School. Station 12 s crew consisting of Lieutenant Brian Strong, Driver Operator Josh Hall, Firefighter Jason Lengefeld and Firefighter Aaron Jolly along with Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore, spoke with the students on Fire Safety While in the Kitchen. Station 11 s Engine crew consisted of Lieutenant Lisa Ford, Driver Operator John Hustoles and Firefighter Timothy Hammond. Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore assisted with the tour. The crew provided a Station Tour and an Engine Display. The Cub Scouts visited today in order to fulfill their requirement to earn their First Responders Badge. The Cub Scouts are currently learning First Aid and CPR. 14 Cub Scout members to include parents attended the event. Page 6 of 6
