CITY OF FORMELLO VIA FRANCIGENA A PATH FOR LOCAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM OBJECT Enhancing and road safety improvement on the Via Francigena the historical path from Canterbury to Rome used by pilgrims since the Middle Ages, and used as the economic and cultural share way. In a articulated and new approach oriented to the rediscovery of the Via Francigena in terms of historical, cultural and religious implications, with a new qualification and respect of land use (environmental and natural) and socio-economic (as an opportunity for local development). In European road network (VF reviewed as the "Great European Cultural Route"), in italian road network and at regional and local level (by promoting a wide set of action and ). OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM The program was financed by the Lazio Region in 2008, total amount was 265,000 Euro, the first target was to identify the final track-route. Other target was: Road Safety improvement on the risk scenario located in the path with particular attention to hazardous conditions for pedestrian and cycle mobility; Build the path continuity through the entire municipality area (from Campagnano to Roma); Enhancing the value of the track with different point of view and contexts: rural, urban, historical, landscape and environmental; Define the new opportunities to promote and develope, (synergy between different systems bye recovering and upgrading tracks). 1 / 10

LANDSCAPES THROUGH NATURAL LANDSCAPE: The Valle del Sorbo offers the unique scenario: forest, pasture area and scrub area. It s qualified as a Important Site by the EU Commission. The area is crossed by the river Crèmera, a tributary of the Tevere river, creating gorges and a waterfall near the ancient Mola di Formello (mill grinding). AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPE: Landscape still reflects the original field split, with large plots of land used for agricultural purposes (vineyards, olive groves and cereals) or used for grazing cattle. The evidence of the old estates are the charming farmhouses located in the Formello s countryside. HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL LANDSCAPE: The area is dominated by ruines of the ancient Città di Veio, the presence of the necropolis placed in the tuff plateaus and the road structures linked with Rome, including the Via Cassia and the Via Veientana. In addition to the Necropolis of San Michele, where is the dig the ancient Campana s tomb, there are other other cultural and historical interesting place scattered throughout the territory. URBAN LANDSCAPE: The old town is characterized by a system of medieval origin, with several buildings with a great architectural and historical value. Depending by specific conditions were provided the following types of intervention: pedestrian paths, separate and protect from driveway; enhancement of the historic urban characteristics; urban roadside design in order to enhance the pathcontinuity and visibility also in the urban context; traffic-calming measures in high conflict sites. RECOVERING AND RESTRUCTURING OF OLD TRACKS ANTE OPERAM POST OPERAM Recovering of the ancient paths resolve three main aims: 1. to offer the best road safety solution and to reduce the motorized user conflicts; 2. moving great value area: environmental and landscape; 3. recovering the historical memory of the ancient paths. The majority of action are landscape design: restoration and clearing the paths; tree pruning and clearing forest areas; new retaining walls or consolidation of existing; bys area; building of point of view; safety fences in high risk places. 7 / 10

CONSTRUCTION OF CYCLE-PEDESTRIAN PATHS ANTE OPERAM POST OPERAM Through the creation of new sections of pedestrian and cycle in nature, striving for the same purposes of recovery and improvement of sites: creating areas of special environmental and landscape value; using and optimizing the potential offered by natural elements (trees, natural edge, featuring open views, parking places) respecting the constraint of the Parco di Veio and the characteristics of the landscape The interventions include: realization of the path with stabilized soil or on the natural background; safety measures of traits and critical points; tree pruning and clearing forest areas; new arrangement and enhancement of existing trees; accommodation of stopping areas and site of sitting, in order to enhance portions of the landscape with particular value. 9 / 10

LOCAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES the Via Francigena becomes an opportunity to initiate a broader process of promoting and developing local resources. In this direction moves the commitment of the municipal administration for: create an awareness on the opportunities related to enhancing the ancient route: implementation of communications initiatives and public information; involve the various stakeholders with broad and diffuse strategies: creating moments of consultation and coordination; implement initiatives and activities aimed at strengthening the value of Via Francigena Schema of the via Francigena structure 10 / 10
