NICI Science Campaign fully underway Available for general use 2009B Several upgrades Dichroics to replace 50/50 mirror Additional filters ordered Optimized spider, pupil, and focal plane masks mostly delivered Installation depends on delivery Spare DM in procurement; delivery by end of year? 4
Flamingos-2 First light images! 5
Flamingos-2 Current and future events On-telescope Acceptance Testing underway Complete AT 4 th Q 2009 Commission observing modes in phases during 2010 E.g., imaging first, then spectroscopy modes Primarily motivated by failing array Also allows for additional characterization Temporary shutdown sometime in 2010 Replace HAWAII-2 array Modify or repair other major Timing depends on delivery of new HAWAII-2 array Complete full commissioning with new array 6
Flamingos-2 Significant Issues Array New defect seen in first post-ship warm test of the array Dead pixels continue to be confined in one area New HAWAII-2 ordered expected delivery by end of year 7
Flamingos-2 Significant Issues (cont) New Gate Valve baffle fixed K-band background Wheel mechanisms improved Still no R3000 grating. Cold clamp to decrease pre-cool times is being tested New baffle mechanism currently limits F2 to side-looking ports OIWFS out of alignment F2T2 awaiting F2 and GeMS Initial I&T work initiated this month 8
GNIRS 9
GNIRS Lots of Progress New, very good Aladdin-3 science array plus a 3-quadrant engineeringgrade array purchased from Raytheon Mechanism and MUX tests underway OIWFS testing with engineeringgrade array now complete Many optics and assemblies aligned All motors and sensors have been tested warm and are functional Vacuum tested; cold testing now GNIRS Offner Assembly Testing at NOAO 10
GNIRS Setbacks Continued lens coating problems (3 lenses) New coatings are failing Internal Gemini Escalation Team worked with vendor to identify problem with coating process Discovered a change in coating recipe from vendor Re-commission with1 good, 1 uncoated and 1 hot lens (Replace hot and uncoated later when proper coatings can be procured) 11
GNIRS Optics coating failure An unfortunate recurring problem with GNIRS optics note coating failure (crinkled areas) 12
GNIRS Setbacks (cont) Offner secondary scratched Replacement received and accepted, testing pending OIWFS work took longer than expected now tested and working Schedule Acceptance Testing Feb 10 Telescope Apr 10 13
GMOS-N CCDs Hamamatsu CCD in Socket with Cable 14
GMOS-N CCDs Our goal for replacing the CCDs: improved red QE 15
GMOS-N CCDs Hamamatsu won CCD down-select One Engineering-grade detector already delivered 3 Science-grade detectors selected, but not accepted Awaiting verification of specifications Issued Contract to HIA for Integration and Testing Will use new ARC (SDSU) Generation-3 controller 4-channel readout for faster reads Decided against a MIT/LL focal plane as a backup Contract work I&T timescale longer than anticipate Delivery to Gemini North in 2 nd quarter 2010 Installation into GMOS-N mid-2010 16
GPI GPI dewar with new paint job 17
GPI GPI Progress Cal box nearing completion Integral Field Spectrograph dewar cold cycled New low-vibration cryo-coolers tested Apodizer choices made MEMS still not delivered Contingency run scheduled Integration and Testing scheduled to start February 2010 Acceptance Testing completion scheduled for end of 2010 Potential for delays in Integration and Testing, but working hard to minimize the possibility 18
GeMS (Gemini MCAO System) The laser infrastructure is now mounted on the Gemini South telescope. 19
GeMS Current Status Laser Service Enclosure installed on telescope 20
GeMS Current Status Beam Transfer Optics Some alignment completed; other tasks behind schedule Laser Keck laser undergoing Factory Acceptance Testing Finding bugs with software, but general specs looking good Gemini laser delivery still scheduled for late 2009 Canopus (the AO bench) software upgrades and new features implemented; cooling system re-design on going 21
GeMS Issues Resource-limited: currently team operates on average at 60% of scheduled completion level due to higher priority projects (e.g., Flamingos-2) 22
GeMS 2009B Plans Infrastructure Integration and Testing Beam Transfer Optics installed and commissioned Canopus cooling resolved Canopus wave-front sensor work If laser is received, commission inside the support enclosure 23
GeMS 2010 Plans Implementation of Laser Bench Beam Stabilizer System on telescope First light of Laser Guide Star Lab test Canopus with GSAOI and integrate at the telescope First light with Canopus towards end of semester 2011 Plans 2011A Science commissioning 24
Summary NICI Full operations Upgrades ~2 nd quarter 2010? Flamingos-2 Commissioning starts late 2009B New array installed 1 st half of 2010 GNIRS Continued schedule delays due to coating failures Likely ready for commissioning in 2010A 25
Summary GMOS-N CCDs CCD and I&T contracts issued Integration into GMOS-N late 2010A GPI 2010 is Integration and Testing year Delivery to telescope no sooner than early 2011 GeMS (MCAO) Schedule hindered by late laser and limited human resources Commissioning with GSAOI 2011A 26
