1 Introduction 1.2 Important user information 1.2 Important user information Introduction This section contains important information regarding MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator and this operating instructions. Read this before using MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator All users must read Chapter 2 Safety instructions, on page 13 before installing, using or maintaining the system. Do not operate MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator in any other way than described in the user documentation. If you do, you may be exposed to hazards that can lead to personal injury, you may cause damage to the equipment, and no warranty will apply. Intended use of MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator is a thermostatic circulator for electrophoresis equipment. MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator supplies both coolant for high voltage techniques and provides temperature control at higher temperature (e.g. 60 C) when performing DNA sequencing. MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator is not suitable for operation in a potentially explosive atmosphere or for handling flammable liquids. WARNING Do not operate MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator in any other way than described in MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator operating instructions. The system must be installed according to the instructions in Chapter 4 Installation, on page 32. WARNING Do not use MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator if it is not working properly, or if it has suffered any damage, for example: damage to the power cord or its plug damage caused by dropping the equipment damage caused by splashing liquid onto it NOTICE MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator does not contain any radioactive material or magnetic fields. Flammable liquids and explosive environment WARNING Flammable liquids. MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator is not approved to handle flammable fluids. 2 Safety instructions 2.1 Safety precautions CAUTION Do not handle or drain the system unless you are sure the fluid is at a safe temperature (20 C to 55 C). Installing and moving WARNING All energy isolation devices should be located in a readily accessible location. WARNING The unit does not have handles. Take into account the unit's weight, 66 pounds (30 kilograms), when unpacking and transporting. We recommend two people lift the unit from the bottom. WARNING The unit is not designed to be floor mounted. WARNING Make sure that the system is placed on a stable flat bench with adequate space for ventilation. WARNING Access to power switch and power cord. The power switch must always be easy to access. The power cord must always be easy to disconnect. MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator must always be connected to a grounded power outlet. WARNING Disconnect power. Always disconnect power from the instrument before replacing any component on the instrument, unless stated otherwise in the user documentation. System operation WARNING Safe distance. Always maintain a safe distance from MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator during drainage or other activities that may involve splashing. WARNING Operating limits. Never exceed the operating limits stated in this operating instruction and on the system label. If MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator is operated outside these limits, the equipment may be damaged and bodily injury or death may occur. 2 Safety instructions 2.1 Safety precautions WARNING Leakage of refrigerant may cause oxygen deficiency in an enclosed area. Refer to information on the instrument s rating label and the most current MSDS for the refrigerant. Make sure that sufficient room ventilation is available. WARNING Before using any fluid refer to the manufacturer s MSDS and EC safety data sheets for handling precautions. Ensure that the reservoir overflow located on the rear of the MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator is connected to a suitable drain. NOTICE The MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator's refrigeration system is sealed and does not require lockout/tagout. Remove any isolation devices before starting the MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator. NOTICE All electrical energy sources for the MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator are provided by the user. Maintenance WARNING There must not be any residues of harmful substances left during maintenance. Make sure that the MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator is properly cleaned before maintenance. To ensure this, collect samples and analyze them for any suspected chemicals used or stored in areas adjacent to the MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator. Please contact an authorized representative of the manufacturer for information concerning the decommissioning of equipment. The system complies with the requirements for electromagnetic compliance (EMC) in Australia and New Zealand. Warning! Read the user documentation before using the system. Use this button to cancel any changes and to return the controller to its previous display. Canceling a change can only be made before the change is saved. In some cases, it is also used to save changes. Note: Holding this button for five seconds resets the display contrast to the default level and also brings up the language menu to change, if needed, the displayed language. 4 Installation 4.1 Site requirements 4.1 Site requirements Introduction This section outlines the site requirements for MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator. WARNING MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator does not have handles. Take into account the unit's weight, 66 pounds (30 kilograms), when unpacking and transporting. It is recommended that two people lift the unit from the bottom. NOTICE Never place MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator in a location where excessive heat, moisture, inadequate ventilation, or corrosive materials are present. NOTICE MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator should be left in an upright position at room temperature (~25 C) for 24 hours before starting. This will ensure the lubrication oil has drained back into the compressor. Space requirements The unit is designed for continuous operation and for indoor use. Also, it is not designed to be floor-mounted. Note: Allow space on the laboratory bench for access to the rear and sides of the instrument. The MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator's design allows blocking of any two sides (except rear) without affecting rated load. The ambient temperature is reduced by 3 C if two sides are blocked. WARNING Access to power switch and power cord. The power switch must always be easy to access. The power cord must always be easy to disconnect. WARNING Protective ground. MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator must always be connected to a grounded power outlet. WARNING Do not use MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator if it is not working properly, or if it has suffered any damage, for example: damage to the power cord or its plug damage caused by dropping the equipment damage caused by splashing liquid onto it The construction of the MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator provides protection against the risk of electrical shock by grounding appropriate metal parts. The protection will not function unless the power cord is connected to a properly grounded outlet. The MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator unit is intended for use on a dedicated outlet. All units are equipped with a C14 main power inlet and a 20 A circuit protector. Note: If the circuit protector trips, allow the unit to cool before resetting the circuit protector. Restart the unit. Contact us if it activates again. Refer to the nameplate on the rear, upper-left-hand corner of the unit for specific electrical requirements. Voltage deviations of ± 10% are permissible. CAUTION Never connect the process fluid lines to your facility water supply or any pressurized liquid source. CAUTION Ensure the tubing you select meets your maximum temperature and pressure requirements. Plumbing connections 1 Ensure that all shipping plugs are removed before installation. The process fluid connections are located on the rear of the unit and are labeled PROCESS OUTLET and PROCESS INLET 2 Connect the PROCESS OUTLET to the fluid inlet on your application. Connect the PROCESS INLET to the fluid outlet on your application. 3 Connect the reservoir overflow to a suitable drain. 4 Ensure all connections are secure. 5 Keep the distance between the unit and the instrument being cooled as short as possible. To minimize back pressure, ensure tubing is as straight as possible. MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator is not approved to handle flammable fluids. WARNING Handling and disposal of liquids other than water should be done in accordance with the fluid manufacturers specification and/or the MSDS for the fluid used. WARNING The user is always responsible for the fluid used. Never use corrosive or flammable fluids with this unit. WARNING Ensure, when selecting the heat transfer fluid, that no toxic gases can be generated. Inflammable gases can build up over the fluid during usage. 4 Installation 4.4 Fluid considerations NOTICE Water/ laboratory grade ethylene glycol mixtures require top-offs with pure water, otherwise the percentage of laboratory grade ethylene glycol will increase resulting in high viscosity and poor performance. Do not use bath fluids that: are very highly viscous (much higher than 30 mpas at the respective working temperature) have corrosive characteristics or tend to break down at high temperatures For fluid selection consider application requirements, operating temperature range, material compatibility, safety concerns, and environmental issues. This section outlines the filling requirements for MultiTemp IV Thermostatic Circulator. Note: Ensure the reservoir overflow located on the rear of the unit is connected to a suitable drain. 1 Start with 2.8 liters of fluid. Lift up on the fill panel on the front of the unit to remove it. 2 Insert the supplied funnel into the hose and slowly add fluid. Note: Due to the unit's plumbing configuration, adding fluid too quickly may result in overfilling - the fill level indication lags the actual amount added. 3 Ensure the fluid contacts the side of the funnel first, A when pouring fluid into the funnel. Pouring the fluid into the center of the funnel, B, will cause air pockets and substantially slow down the filling time. CAUTION Before draining any fluid refer to the manufacturer s MSDS and EC safety data sheets for handling precautions. CAUTION If leakage occurs from the drain tubing on the front panel, hot fluid may cause harm to personnel. CAUTION Drain the unit before it is transported and/or stored in near or below freezing temperatures. 1 Lift up on the fill panel on the front of the unit to remove it. 2 Pull the fill hose off the clips securing it to the unit. The RTA can be set ±10 C (±18 F). As an example, if the unit's temperature is stabilized and displaying 20 C but a calibrated reference thermometer reads 20.5 C, the RTA should be set to -0.5 C. After you enter a RTA value allow unit to stabilize before verifying the temperature in the bath. NOTE If display accuracy is required, we recommend repeating this procedure at various setpoint temperatures and on a regular basis.
