The BackBulb C July 2018 COS Orchids in the Park Expedition If you missed POE (Pacific Orchid Exposition) you have another chance to see a show in San Francisco. OITP is a great show with 26 vendors: Andy s Orchids, Asbell s Orchids, Barsch Tropicals, Botanico, Brookside Orchids, Calwest Tropical Supply/Flori Culture, Carola s Bromeliads, City College of San Francisco (CCSF), D & D Flowers, Divine Orchids, Ecuagenera (Ecuador), Exotica Esoterica, Floralia Orquideas(Brazil), Gaige Qualmann (artist), Golden Gate Orchids, Hanging Gardens, Orchids and Garden, Orchid Conservation Alliance, Orchid Design, Orchids of Los Osos, OrchidSource Laboratory and Nursery, Seed Engei (Japan), SFOS Member Plant Sales, Sorella Orchids, Ten Shin Gardens (Taiwan). And a few exhibits (this isn t POE). It takes place in the same building as POE which means the same parking problems, but also the same terrific restaurant possibilities for lunch (my favorite, Patxi's Pizza, is only a block away). Shows are still your best bet to diversify your collection. There are more plants for sale and on exhibit then all of our meetings combined. Shows are a perfect opportunity to talk to the vendor who grew your plant and find out exactly what it wants to thrive. If you havn t been to a big show, or been to a show lately, now is the perfect time to experience it and pick up a few gems for yourself. COS members who want to go to the show meet at the Marina Best Buy parking lot, near the bus stop, at 8AM Saturday July 21 and we will car pool up to the show. Anybody who drives with at least 2 other persons in their car gets first shot at August s plant table! (you must be present to win). Also riders are expected to contribute to gas and parking 1 costs. Cal Orchid Summer Hummer Summer Weekend is just that: a whole weekend full of fun, festivities, and cultural experiences for all! There are games, raffles, and even live music on Saturday! Even the avocado trees get into the swing of things by contributing 250 fruits to make up our guacamole bowl! Bring your comfy shoes, and be prepared to relax while enjoying a weekend full of rare orchids and international orchid community. This event will require more than just an hour, or two of your time to fully enjoy. So plan ahead to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to learn, laugh, munch and pick up a few stunning additions to your garden, greenhouse or home! Absolutely do not miss a chance to observe the afternoon Neofinetia falcata judging session at 2:00pm Saturday. This is an amazing event, and unique opportunity to enjoy a world renowned genus, learn how to grow and bloom your own plant into a stunning specimen, and add a new cultivar to your own collection to enjoy for years to come. Come for the plants, absolutely, but you will leave Cal-Orchid smiling for many, many reasons!!! The weather is heating up just like our selection of rare and beautiful Orchids. Cal Orchid is pulling out all the stops for this year's event! Unreal sales opportunities never offered before! Pay off those credit cards and be prepared to grab some hot deals on one of the most diverse inventory anywhere! We have invited some very prestigious foreign nurseries to join in on the fun and mix up the sales options for you! Afri Orchids - Lourens Grobler's skill and knowledge concerning African Orchids is like no other. He has only been to the US for sales a few times and has sold out every time. This time he will have a large inventory of plants (even some cycads) and we are hoping to set aside time on Saturday morning for him to give a presentation on culture as well. Peruflora - You have had an opportunity to meet the owner, Manolo, when he last visited Cal-Orchid, now meet his manager, Saul (he's the one who is always smiling). This is a very professional and well respected nursery, specializing in a wide variety of species from Peru. Last time they came to sell at Cal they had very strong sales, so shop early! Tokyo Orchid Nursery - Our Summer Hummer is the only venue where you can find plants available in the U.S. from this first class Cattleya and Paphiopedilum hybridizer. They have won Grand Champion at the prestigious Japan Grand Prix show THREE TIMES! This is a rare shopping opportunity. Come and visit with Machan and Ayako Takahashi. Bert Ruiter Orchids - If your orchid collection focuses on Cymbididums, do not miss this weekend! Bert has been hybridizing unusual colors and spotted flowers at his nursery in Holland for years, but never before sold in the US. His plants for the sale were shipped in last month and Epidendrum radicans, in Carolyn's backyard potted up so they will be nicely established for you! Page 5 July 2018
