Inspiration for urban design 188 Inspiring a new generation

Inspiration for public places Parks, other recreation areas and streetscapes are important to everyday life. And good urban design helps to create desirable areas where people want to live, work, play and invest. Essential elements of urban design are street and park furniture. These make a signifi cant contribution to providing amenities for people, establishing the identity of urban areas and reinforcing the sense of place or atmosphere of particular neighbourhoods. The properties of individual items of furniture are also important. Quality and maintenance have economic consequences, whereas style and functionality infl uence location and use. Design versatility is required for harmonisation within an overall objective. HAGS enhances Plaza by HAGS comprises street and park furniture combining soughtafter style, quality and easy maintenance. Our product range inspires the creation of pleasant urban environments that enhance a sense of place and the quality of life. 3

HAGS solutions attract and please Visitors must be continually attracted to public places in order to enjoy their full benefi ts. And this requires two absolute musts the creation of a place rather than just a design, and the cleanliness and maintenance of facilities. Physical elements, like seating and litter bins, must be present to welcome people, make them feel comfortable and encourage them to stay. William H. Whyte, author and scholar of the human habitat, encouraged triangulation. This is the process whereby some external stimulus provides a linkage between people in public places and prompts strangers to interact as if they know each other. For example, benches, a shelter and fencing can be placed together in a way that will naturally bring people together. HAGS street and park furniture inspire people to triangulate! 4

HAGS solutions look good and endure Street and park furniture must satisfy the demands of both landscape architects and municipal accountants. Therefore form and function need to be complemented with durability and easy maintenance. How particular units are used is also an important consideration when choosing them. For example, many youngsters sit on the bench backrest instead of the seat, therefore very strong materials and robust construction are required to withstand this. The seating arrangement in areas where interesting activities take place all around favours benches without backrests that allow users to face any direction. Good design should also reach out to other essential items such as litter bins, ash containers and cycle stands to give a unifi ed harmonious impression. This inclusive design approach is fundamental to Plaza by HAGS. 7

HAGS solutions refl ect thoughtful F 3 design Form Function Finance The design of HAGS street and park furniture is based on three prime considerations in order to satisfy the demands of the market: where every item of furniture is regarded as a piece of art to be harmonised with particular surroundings. where close attention is given to how items are used so that design features can be incorporated to achieve the desired effects. where materials, construction, quality and maintenance are integrated to ensure minimal life-cycle costs. We call this design approach F 3, because the total effect is far greater than the sum of its parts. The result is an extensive range of products of contemporary style that enhances outdoor environments and provides a source of inspiration for landscape architects and urban dwellers. 8

Benches and picnic tables The strength and shine of stainless steel, the natural colours of wood, the softness yet resilience of polymers and rubber. These are just some of the elements used to create the outstanding range of HAGS benches and picnic tables. The design and functionality of different product lines meet specifi c application needs. Styles are available that blend in well with city locations such as art galleries, busy squares and bus stations, or park areas like lakeside paths, playgrounds and meeting places. Shelters and fencing Shelter from the weather, a barbecue with family and friends, a rest during a round of golf. Or just being alone to enjoy peace and quiet. HAGS shelters, fencing and outdoor grills allow people to do just this. Complete kits can be assembled quickly to provide a pleasant meeting spot or calm haven. 9

Litter bins and ash stands Attention to detail creates a good impression because it sends out signals that someone has taken the time and trouble to enhance something. This is why HAGS applies its expertise in providing smart combination of form and function to even small yet important items like litter bins and ash stands. 10

Cycle stands and cycle sheds No matter whether you need single units, multiple racks or sheltered stands, HAGS can satisfy all your cycle parking needs. Cycles can be held by the wheels, frames and handlebars, and special units can be installed to secure cycles and prevent theft. HAGS promotes the healthy and economic benefi ts of cycling. Complementary products To complement its main product lines, HAGS supplies a number of items for use in recreation areas. These include fencing, barriers, bollards, posts, traffi c obstacles, and fl agpoles. Thus, in total, the HAGS product range represents your one-stop-shop for the tasteful furnishing of outdoor urban environments. 11
