INTRODUCTION THE ROADS OF THE FUTURE ARE HERE. THEY GLOW IN THE DARK, INTERACT AND BRING A BRAND NEW EXPERIENCE TO DRIVERS. THE LANDSCAPE BECOMES AN EXPERIENCE OF LIGHT AND INFORMATION. OLD SOLUTIONS, SYSTEMS AND MECHANISMS THAT WE HAVE RELIED UPON THIS FAR, MAKE WAY FOR NEW AND POETRY. A DIFFERENCE LIKE NIGHT AND DAY. Smart Highway is a cutting edge concept for the intelligent, interactive roads, or even the landscape, of tomorrow. It is an innovation program that links a different way of thinking to progressive ideas. Ideas that deal with the possibilities offered by new technologies intelligently: the result of an intensive collaboration between Dutch roadbuilding company Heijmans and well known designer Daan Roosegaarde. With Smart Highway techno poetry is introduced into landscape design. This leads to sustainable and energy efficient solutions, based on the latest technology. Smart Highway is not only a range of products, but a continuously evolving innovation programme that aims to redevelop the landscape. 02 03

GLOWING LINES Glowing Lines collect energy during the day and give light at night. Here the landscape becomes an experience of light and information. Glowing Lines uses glow in the dark technology, to mark out the edges of the lanes. As a result this increases visibility and safety. Glowing lines provide a light solution both on and off grid. Especially in rural areas the Glowing Lines increase visibility and thus they have a positive effect on road safety. The Glowing Lines can be experienced every night at the N329 in Oss, the Netherlands. GLOWING LINES charging shining 04 05

VAN GOGH- ROOSEGAARDE BICYCLEPATH The interactive Van Gogh-Roosegaarde Bicyclepath is a cultural spin off from technologies used in Smart Highway. After dark visitors will be amazed by a design of light and colour, inspired by the worldfamous painting The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. Artist Daan Roosegaarde and Heijmans jointly developed this special innovative technology that illuminates the path with thousands of twinkling stones. This creates an interaction between light and poetry. As a result the path has made the Nuenen area even more famous as a Van Gogh heritage. The number of visitors has increased enormously. The technology is so appealing that it invites cyclists, hikers and joggers of every country in the world to experience the Starry Night in real life. The path is open to the public in Nuenen, region Eindhoven, the Netherlands. 06 07

DYNAMIC PAINT Smart Highway aimes to convey real time information to the road user. Changing conditions on the road can cause dangerous situations or even accidents. The faster road users can become aware of these changes, the better they can adjust their behaviour. With dynamic paint the real time information about the temperature of the road is seen on the roadsurface. Temperature-controlled marking becomes visible and transparent again, depending on temperature of the road surface. The marking warns road users when the conditions on the road change to become slippery and the forming of black ice appears. Drivers experience direct interaction with the road. 08 09

ELECTRIC PRIORITY LANE The range of electrical driven cars is one of the most talked about subjects. When the accessibly of charging points can be taken out of the equation, range is no longer a limiting factor. Induction charging offers electric cars the possibility to charge themselves while driving. Electric Priority Lanes stimulate sustainable transportation. 10 11

INTERACTIVE LIGHT In terms of energy efficient systems there is still a lot to be won by lighting of infrastructure. With sensors lighting can become far more efficient and it can adjust to real time situations or even moods. Interactive Light is controlled by sensors: it only turns on when traffic approaches. It is a sustainable and cost-saving alternative to continuous lighting. Interactive Lighting can also provide speed guidance as well as provide walking and cycling routes in protected areas. 12 13

DYNAMIC LINES In urban areas efficient land use is of the utmost importance, still car infrastructure uses a big part of public space in cities. What if this space can be used more efficiently and flexible? Road markings can be flexibly modified, to switch from a continuous line to a dotted line and vice versa. Dynamic Lines are adjustable depending on the situation. Dynamic Lines contribute to an improved road capacity management. 14 15

BENEFITS Smart Highway has a unique value for clients and drivers. The road becomes an journey of inspiration, far more than just a road. Also the road becomes more sustainable, more interactive and intelligent by using glow-in-the-dark techniques. Safety is also an important benefit of the Smart Highway, while the road is well lit and marked. INNOVATION AND TESTING Smart Highway is an innovation program, led by Heijmans and Studio Roosegaarde. The ideas are tested in the Heijmans Asphalt Lab, at the highway of the future in a living lab or at the studio of Daan Roosegaarde. Each innovation has to meet high demands of safety and severe weather conditions, such as rain, cold or extreme heat. Outside the Netherlands, Heijmans works together with local partners to develop new projects abroad. We deliver new ideas and knowledge to our customers outside The Netherlands. TECHNICAL INFORMATION The Glowing Lines and the Van Gogh- Roosegaarde Bicyclepath are both realised and open to the public at the given locations in the Nethelands. The other innovations are in development. The Glowing Lines is a system that can be installed in the asphalt. We developed a continuous line, that can be used to mark the road, enlighten it and create a poetic experience. To guarantee continuous light quality and safety, the lines use energy to further activate the system. The Glowing Lines are only offered in a green glow-in-the dark pigment. The lines are 0,5 inches wide, 0,7 inches high and can be at maximum 295 feet long. However, combining lines can lead to an unlimited number of Glowing lines miles. There are a few specific requirements for the system: It can only be installed in concrete and asphalt with a minimum thickness of 4 inch. The system can be cleaned by normal cleaning methods for roads. The lines are also visible in snow, yet, once covered in a thick layer in snow they are not visible anymore. The Van Gogh Bicyclepath is a combination of little illuminated stones in concrete, that are designed in a pattern. To enrich the color and mark the poetic sight of the path, we used LED lights in different colors. These lights are part of a fence that is used to mark the path. 16 17

INNOVATION BY CO-CREATION 18 19

HEIJMANS Heijmans is a listed company that combines activities related to property development, residential building, non-residential building, roads and civil engineering. Heijmans is active in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany and as a technology partners delivers know-how and concepts in various markets. Our constant focus on quality improvements, innovation and integrated solutions enables us to generate added value for our clients. Heijmans realises projects for private consumers, companies and the public sector. With more than 7,000 employees and 1.9 billion in revenues in 2014, we are building the spatial contours of tomorrow. COMPANY PROFILE We believe the construction industry can be more innovative and efficient. Look at the built environment around you and you see it instantly: safe, beautiful, pleasant and efficient buildings are the keepers. But there s plenty more of the same. From our very beginnings in 1923 we have been adapting the necessary renovations needed for this. And you can still see that reflected every day in Heijmans signature elements. Whether it involves double layered ZOAB or Smart Highway. 20 21

MISSION AND VISION In the distant future, construction is still a trade: something that requires knowledge and skills. But more than ever, in this same future this trade will no longer be defined by making, but also by inventing. Clients who buy these products and services, sometimes prefer to share and rent it than have it. This is very significant for our profession. Because that is how we will invent new systems that allow us to deal with space and (raw) materials more intelligently and more efficiently. This calls for change, creativity and systems integration. STRATEGY: IMPROVING AND INNOVATING Our target is to become the best and thereby most innovative company in our sector. We can achieve this by pushing the continuous improvement of our core activities forward and launching our remarkable innovations and products. 1923 Heijmans dates back to 1923 when Jan Heijmans started his roadworks company in Rosmalen. Already innovative at the time as one of the very first to start using bituminous road surfaces. The post-war reconstruction provided plenty of opportunities for growth, through the repair and laying of roadways and airfields. In 1993, Heijmans was listed on the Amsterdam Exchanges. This made further growth possible. Today Heijmans is creating space by launching innovative ideas and showing its colour in the market. CONTOURS OF TOMORROW Ultimately ideas and solutions can create added value for clients, if they are also good for the living environment. As builders that is exactly where we can make a difference. It is therefore logical for us to strive to combine creating value and social relevance. By creating buildings that produce energy instead of spending it. By designing plans that save space and combine functions and by re-using materials. Many of our products and services are therefore able to add value, instead of abstracting it. MAKING ROADS INTERACTIVE IS MAKING THEM MORE SAFE Heijmans 22 23
