DESIGN ENLIGHTENMENT CHALLENGE Inspiration through Feeling
Author and interior designer Bea Pila invites you to think of spaces from the inside out through her Design Enlightenment Challenge. Although you have been learning about the history of design and how styles have transitioned over time, you will use feelings along with real, tangible materials and textures to describe a space and reveal the intangible quality that interior spaces can conjure. Tap into your senses and allow your emotions to guide you, enjoy the process and have fun! OBJECTIVE Create a physical, three-dimensional moodboard that visually and tactilely represents your Design Feeling for your selected interior image and provide feelings that relate to the image rather than traditional words of style or period. (Refer to examples provided) MATERIALS -One rectangular tray or platform area as close to 14.5 x 18.5 as possible *Optional: The tray or platform space can be used as a stylistic object to enhance the composition -Your own selection of design materials KEY DATES - Competition opens Wednesday, January 17 - Interior photograph and submission form is due no later than Wednesday, January 24 to be sent via email to kimberly@bpiladesign.com - Final work submission Wednesday, February 7 at 8 AM to MDC Kendall Campus, Room 6360 *Bea Pila s review of final work 9:30-11:30 in room 6360, with Media Services present *Final work includes Interior Photograph + Assigned Feelings + Physical Moodboard - Winner will be announced March 12 at MDC Library for the Women s History Month talk, where five finalists will be selected and presented certificates -A single top prize winner will be announced and awarded with Media Services present *You will be provided a B. INSTRUCTIONS & CRITERIA 1. Provide an image of your interior selection and filled submission form provided to enter competition and email to kimberly@bpiladesign.com no later than January 24th Please allow 2 business days for Bea to respond with feedback and/or approval (January 28th by email) 2. Upon approval, reference the photographs provided from Inspired Styles by Barbel Miebach & Dominique Browning to create your own physical moodboard of corresponding objects, including but not limited to fabrics, wallpapers, materials, mementos, etc. that might have been the inspiration for the interior A minimum of three non-interior design objects must be incorporated into the vignette 3. Assign feelings to your interior and moodboard using Bea Pila s Discovery Questionnaire as a guide (excerpt provided) Can be written out alongside or incorporated into your moodboard, must be between 5-7 words **Participating MDC professors include Marcia Lopes de Mello, Julio Alvarez & Juan Damas **Students have the option to compete individually or in teams with up to two members; single or team entries must be proclaimed and confirmed upon competition submission **Vignette/moodboard cannot exceed the dimensions given **All vignettes are reviewed and judged based on a criteria of evocation of emotion as well as harmony, balance of color, creativity AWARD Five finalists will be selected and presented a Design Enlightenment Certificate and the final winner will be awarded a copy of Sacred Spaces for Inspired Living, a deck of Design Enlightenment Inspiration Cards, and a complimentary reservation to an exclusive workshop (date to be announced) with Bea Pila as part of her Design Enlightenment Method educational series (a value of $2,200). Here, Bea personally guides attendees through her philosophies and seven-step process for aligning interior design with the authentic lifestyle we seek.
