March 2018 Roadrunner News Newsletter of the Long Beach Cactus Club Founded 1933; Affiliate of the Cactus and Succulent Society of America, Inc. MEETING PROGRAM: Woody Minnich: The New, Rare and Seldom Seen Cacti & Succulents of Mexico Photo by Woody Minnich Mexico is considered by many to be one of the richest regions in the world for cacti. From the United States to the north, to its southern border of Guatemala, there are an amazing number of genera and species to be found. These range from the tiny Turbinicarpus to the giant Pachycereus. Within the reaches of Mexico, there are many diverse geologic environments. These habitats vary from the coastal and inland low lands to its many high mountain niches. For almost 50 years, I have been lucky enough to have traveled most all of Mexico. Thus, my favorite regions for exploring include the most popular Baja California, to the mysterious Sierra Madre Occidental, and the succulent rich Sierra Madre Oriental. It is from these famous territories that the majority of the highly desired collector s taxa are to be found. One might think that Mexico, being so close to the United States, would have been totally explored and there would be nothing new to find. Nothing could be further from truth! We are now finding new species of cacti and other succulents at an astonishing rate. These new finds have become a reality mainly because of the construction of many new roads leading us into what was previously unexplored territory. Coahuila, Durango and Zacatecas embody many of these remote regions where few explorers have had the opportunity to botanize. And now, these areas are rapidly opening up!

The ever-popular genera of: Agave, Dasylerion, Fouquieria, Ariocarpus, Astrophytum, Aztekium, Echeveria, Gymnocactus, Mammillaria, Pelecephora and Turbinicarpus, are just a few of the genera where the addition of new species has become common. Due to all of the excitement and interest in these new plants, there have been numerous negative side effects that have evolved. This increased interest in these new plants, combined with the commercial powers of the internet/google, has created new distribution avenues for the marketing of the rare and or endangered species. Plants I have seen for many, many years are now facing new threats from commercial collecting. CITIES and the enforcement of local and international laws, regarding illegally collected plants, has had very little impact on curtailing the destruction of specific plant populations. This is especially true when plants are new or highly desired because of their scarcity in the collector s circuit. LOCATION: Rancho Los Alamitos, 6400 Bixby Hill Road, Long Beach, CA 90815. We will meet in the meeting room next to the gift shop. Rancho Los Alamitos is located within Bixby Hill and accessed through the residential security gate at Anaheim and Palo Verde. From the 405 Freeway, exit at Palo Verde Avenue and turn south. From the 605 Freeway, exit at Willow, follow to Palo Verde and turn south. TIME: Sunday, February 4, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. Setup will be from 12:30 1:30. Members will be working in the garden starting at 11 AM. Bring a lunch if you need to. PLANT-OF-THE-MONTH: Cactus: Echinocereus Succulent: Haworthia, Astroloba REFRESHMENTS: We will follow the alphabet to determine who is to bring the snacks and finger foods. This month, those with last names starting with the letters M through R are asked to bring the goodies. Please feel free to bring something even if you don t fall into this group. FREE PLANTS: A selection of plants are given away each month, one each to first time visitors, new members, and members who have a birthday that month. The rest are raffled off to attending members. Members are encouraged to donate any plants they would like to pass along or that they think others would like to buy. LBCC PLANT-OF-THE-MONTHS RULES At the April, 2003 meeting, the following rules were adopted for the Plant-of the-month (POM) competition: A maximum of three plants may be entered in each category (cactus and succulent). There will be three classes for entrants: advanced (blue tag), intermediate (pink tag) and beginner (yellow tag). Advanced and intermediate entrants must have had the plant in their possession for at least six months, beginners for three months. Entrants will receive 8 points for first place, 6 points for second place, 4 points for third place, 2 points for show/honorable mention (HM) and 1 point for showing a plant that does not place. At the discretion of the judges there may be up to three third places in a category. If plants are not deemed to be of sufficient quality, no third place will be awarded. For an entrant to receive points, the entry tags must be collected by the person in charge of record keeping for POM. At the annual Christmas party, award plants will be presented to the ten highest cumulative point holders regardless of class. 2018 LBCC PLANTS-OF-THE-MONTH MONTH CACTI SUCCULENTS March Echinocereus Haworthia, Astroloba April Rebutia, Sulcorebutia Echeveria May Echinocactus, Ferocactus Monadenium, Jatropha June Opuntias, Tephrocactus African Euphorbias July Lobivia, Echinopsis Pachypodium August Thelocactus, Stenocactus Asclepiads September Coryphantha, Ecobaria Fockea, Raphionacme October Neoporteria, Neochilenia Cotyledon, Tylecodon November Miniatures (3) - pots under 3 Miniatures (3) - pots under 3 December HOLIDAY PARTY 2018 PLANT OF THE YEAR: Thelocactus bicolor v.
