Table of changes Change No. Date Scope Foreword This South African standard was approved by National Committee SABS/TC 065, Explosion prevention, in accordance with procedures of the SABS Standards Division, in compliance with annex 3 of the WTO/TBT agreement. This document was approved for publication in May 2016. SANS 1515 consists of the following parts, under the general title Gas measuring equipment primarily for use in mines: Part 1: Battery-operated portable, flammable gas measuring instruments and warning devices. Part 2: Fixed, transportable, and vehicle-mounted flammable gas measuring and warning sensor heads, instruments and devices. Part 3: Gas performance requirements for toxic gas measuring instruments and warning devices. Part 3-1: Battery-operated, portable, toxic gas measuring instruments and warning devices. Part 3-2: Fixed, transportable, and vehicle-mounted toxic gas measuring and warning sensor heads, instruments and devices. Part 4: Gas performance requirements for oxygen-deficient/oxygen-enriched measuring instruments or devices and warning devices. Part 4-1: Battery-operated portable, oxygen-deficient/oxygen-enriched measuring instruments and warning devices. Part 5: Fire detectors. Annexes A and B are for information only. Compliance with this document cannot confer immunity from legal obligations. Introduction The fire detectors specified in this part of SANS 1515 will be used primarily in mines for the early detection of fire to prevent the traumatic loss of lives and the very costly loss of production and equipment caused by mine fires and explosions. The requirements of a fire detector for use in mines differ from the requirements for a fire detector for normal industrial and residential use because of the diverse fire and explosion hazard scenarios in mines (such as electrical fires, coal dust fires and diesel fuel fires), and also the nuisance alarms inherent in a mine environment (for example, a smoke alarm that results from dust or diesel fumes).
