The Rhodomentum Nanaimo Rhododendron Society Newsletter June 2018 President s Message Congratulations to everyone on the success of our Truss Show and Plant Sale one of the best ever! Kudos to Jan and Brenda for the great organizing job and to everyone else who made the show such a great success! Further thanks to Joyce and David who did such a great job organizing the bus trip to gardens in the Duncan area well done! As this is my last year as President, I would like to say a special thanks to the Executive who have supported me these past two years, and to the many others who make our club function. It has been a privilege serving you and I wish the NRS much success in the future. Our potluck windup will be at Chris s on June 16th. The N.R.S. has been celebrating its 25 th anniversary! It s been fun looking back at the club s activities and memories of the last 25 years. Another year has almost come and gone with lots of great club events, speakers, new members and new rhodos to plant. Yes, we really have come a long way since September 1992! We have lots to celebrate and be proud of! Here s one last look back - at previous year-end gatherings! The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul. Alfred Austin 3

Annual Bus Tour Gardens of the Cowichan Valley A bus load of enthusiastic gardeners left Woodgrove Mall bright and early on Saturday, May 19 th for a fun day touring the Cowichan Valley area! We visited 6 beautiful gardens from Genoa Bay, to the Cowichan Valley west of Duncan. Each garden offered us something unique - new areas being developed, very established gardens, alpines, woodlands, ponds, fragrance, beautiful garden art, and more... Comments on the bus ranged from How do they do it? to I m going to try to do something like that too!. Enrico s Winery proved to be a great place to sample wine, have lunch and listen to great live music. Thank you to all of the gardeners who so generously opened their gardens to our club. Your hard work and passion both amazed and inspired us. Special thanks to David and Joyce Mitchell for doing such a great job organizing the bus tour. WELL DONE! We can hardly wait until next year! David and Joyce with friends The patio at Enrico s Winery - we re going back! A touch of royal sophistication in honour of Harry and Meghan 4

Now, That Was a Plant Sale! Our plant sale just might have been our best ever! The vendor displays were like a flower show, which really caught everyone s attention. The line-ups at the till were long and steady for several hours. Our Club s table was a great success, with over $1900 in sales. The overall gross sales were the highest we ve ever had. Yes, it was quite a sale. Thank you to everyone who contributed, be it by bringing in plants, helping set up or clean up, running the cash registers and any of the other jobs which needed to be done. 5

A Great Truss Show by Jan Moles What a terrific Truss Show this year!!! We had 201 entries from 13 entrants entrants submitting as many as 40 or so trusses, or as few as two they were all spectacular and much appreciated by the club members and public alike. I hope more people will be encouraged to join in next year. As you can see, judging is a very serious business, so it took about one and a half hours to consider each class and truss. I particularly liked the foliage table this year, and also the display table which had been lovingly crafted by Chris and Art & Susan. Last, but not least, thank you to all our stalwart helpers who made the Truss Show a great success, from the registration desk, to the management and arranging of the show tables, filling the water bottles (a horrible task), assisting the judges in their task, and to the judges, Marilyn Dawson and Don Bridgen, who did a great job for us! 6

Seen in Passing. Prolonged sun shortening the rhododendron bloom life except for Faggetter s Favourite, which lasted three weeks. First Nations clamdiggers spending a week of low tides in Craig Bay and harvesting many pounds of clams for their food gathering and drying. Significant growth early in the year. Lots in bloom in the Greig Rhododendron Species Garden at Milner. One of the best plant sales we ve ever had! Spectacular gardens that were part of our bus tour. Heard in Passing at the till. This is the best plant sale in town, I look forward to it every year! This is so well organized! Everybody is so helpful and cheerful! Great selection of plants! I m going to get here earlier next year! Wishing you all a wonderful summer! 10
