2 DX-9100/9120 Applications DX-9100/9120 Weekly Testing of Dedicated Stairwell Pressurization Fans

Introduction Application Description This application is designed to perform a weekly test of two dedicated stairwell pressurization fans automatically. An advisory is issued if, within a specified time, the status feedback indicator from a fan does not equal the fan command sent by Metasys. Notes: This application note presents only an example of a smoke control strategy. Realize that since every building is unique, the details of applying the strategy will vary. This application note, then, is offered to assist you in developing an application that will be appropriate for your project. Elevator shafts should be treated like stairwells and be positively pressurized to prevent vertical migration of smoke through the building. Even though this application does not consider elevator shaft pressurization, you may want to include this type of control if the building uses elevators. This application contains a Pressurization Test process and an Alarm Logic process. The Pressurization Test process is triggered once a week by the DX Time Schedule. This process issues start commands to the two stairwell pressurization fans. The process remains in a waiting state from the time that the fans are started until the wait timer expires. After the process On time has continued long enough to show that all systems are operational, the process sends a stop command to each of the stairwell pressurization fans. The Alarm Logic process is triggered if any of the following occurs: A stairwell fan goes into alarm during the pressurization test. An alarm situation would occur if the fan feedback does not equal the fan command. The operator tests the alarm process manually. If either fan is in alarm and it is in the testing schedule and the Reset is false, the Sonalert (Model Number PD-300-50) is energized. Depending on the system s Report Router configuration, advisory text (Critical 1) may be sent to the Report Manager and to the NC Direct Printer. An alarm message is sent to the Report Router/Alarm Management feature, indicating that the fan s feedback did not equal command. The alarm processing flag is then set to False. DX-9100/9120 Applications DX-9100/9120 Weekly Testing of Dedicated Stairwell Pressurization Fans 3

If a weekly test has energized the Sonalert, you can reset the Sonalert using the Fire Fighter s Smoke Control Station (FSCS) or Fire Operator Workstation (OWS). Command the Reset object to On. The Alarm Logic PLC sends a Reset command to the Sonalert output. Command the Reset object to Off so that the next alarm will latch. Regardless of fan states, the manual alarm test always sets the alarm. 4 DX-9100/9120 Applications DX-9100/9120 Weekly Testing of Dedicated Stairwell Pressurization Fans

Design Considerations Keep the following considerations in mind when designing a Weekly Testing of Dedicated Stairwell Pressurization Fans smoke control application. In addition, please refer to the Smoke Control Technical Bulletin (LIT-636330) in this manual. For information on the definition and the initial configuration of the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and the program modules, use the GX-9100 software configuration tool. You can find important instructions and guidelines for using this application in How to Use the Metasys Smoke Control Library (LIT-636332), located in the Smoke Control section of this manual. You must define tag names for all points. You must define a hardware location for each object. You must schedule the Pressurization Test process to run once a week. However, do not schedule the Alarm Logic process to trigger. The two ways to use the Scheduling feature to trigger the Pressurization Test process are: - Schedule via the DX-9100/9120 time schedule, or - Schedule via the OWS (override TSnOUT) The Alarm Logic process has four triggers, each designated by a required connection block. The triggers are: - Alarm Status for Stairwell Fan Number 1 (SF1_Alm) for Stairwell Pressurization Fan Number 1. An alarm occurs when the output does not match the feedback. - Alarm Status for Stairwell Fan Number 2 (ST2_Alm) is for Stairwell Pressurization Fan Number 2. - Alm_Test is used to activate the sonalert. - Reset is used to silence the sonalert. DX-9100/9120 Applications DX-9100/9120 Weekly Testing of Dedicated Stairwell Pressurization Fans 5

The wait timer in the pressurization test is defaulted to two minutes. To change the wait time, go to the time schedule and enter a new stop time, not to exceed the response time specified in National File Protection Agency (NFPA) 92-Smoke Control Systems. Check the size of the fan to determine the waiting time between Start and Stop commands. For more information, refer to the Engineering Data Manual (FAN 347). Advisory text is sent to the OWS critical alarm summary and, if configured by report router, to the NC direct printer. The critical alarm summary has a column for text messages and a column for alarm messages. Advisory text will appear in the Text message column. The Critical Alarm Warning box appears at the OWS when an object goes into alarm or changes state. Alarm messages will be displayed in the Critical Alarm Warning box. Each fan alarm turns on a Logic Result Status (LRS). Use the Report Router/Alarm Management feature to create alarm messages, and link the alarm messages to the LRS points. The alarm message may read: Alarm Number 1 - Feedback does not match the command sent. The schedule time for fan runtime must be greater than the alarm delay timers for each of the stairwell fan s outputs. To schedule a test from the OWS, map in a Digital Constant (DCO) and replace the reference to TS1OUT in the GX-9100 program with DCO. This application complies with the UL 864 UUKL Smoke Control Listing. However, you are responsible for ensuring that the application complies with state and local regulations, and is approved by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). 6 DX-9100/9120 Applications DX-9100/9120 Weekly Testing of Dedicated Stairwell Pressurization Fans

For UL compliance: The Fire OWS reports critical alarms based on the alarm condition, and the alarm can only be cleared by resetting from the Fire OWS or the FSCS. If the DIs are used for smoke control then DI1 must be jumpered and mapped to the Fire OWS as a normal state of On. When DI1 is off, a critical alarm must be issued at both the printer and the terminal. This indicates a binary input fuse failure that must be fixed immediately, because the DI is no longer accurate. Response time for individual smoke control components to achieve their desired state of operational mode, exclusive of control system response, should not exceed the following time periods: 60 seconds for fan operation at the desired state plus 90 seconds to annunciate; 75 seconds for completion of damper travel plus 90 seconds to annunciate. In the case of fan start after damper close, these times are additive. If the damper must be closed before the fan starts, the total response time could be up to 135 seconds for operation, 75 seconds for damper to close plus 60 seconds for fan to start. Time to annunciate would be added to this time. (Control system response is the time from automatic detection of a smoke condition to the issuing of an appropriate command to the equipment.) You must map the Reset (DCO1) and Alm_Test (DCO2) objects to the Fire OWS. The sonalert must be mapped to indicate a critical alarm. To maintain UL 864 UUKL Smoke Control Listing, you must connect a printer model number PRN-3 or PRN-4 to the Fire OWS or directly to the Fire Network Control Module (NCM). For printer installation, refer to the manual included with the printer. Also, configure the Report Router/Alarm Management feature to route your alarm messages to the printer. For specific wiring requirements, refer to Metasys Smoke Control Wiring Technical Bulletin (LIT-636331). Application Details Main Function Location This application performs a weekly test of two dedicated stairwell pressurization fans. An advisory is issued if, within a specified time, feedback from a fan does not equal the fan command. A weekly test of any dedicated smoke control equipment is a requirement of UL 864 UUKL and NFPA 92 Recommended Practice for Smoke Control Systems. The DX-9100/9120 Weekly Testing of Dedicated Stairwell Pressurization Fans application is located under the Fire/Security/ILC Conference of the Engineering Services Bulletin Board System (BBS). Once logged on the BBS, you can download the file to your computer. The application is also located on The Advisor. Follow the path Offices>SystemServicesMilwaukee>EngineeringServices>Fire&Security.
