LP Capsule Efficient illumination in elegant design
Pleasant and atmospheric illumination for parks, pathways and open spaces When architects, local authorities and electricians all over the world choose lighting for urban spaces, there are many different requirements and expectations to be met. The lights must provide a sense of security, be robust and have the right aesthetic expression. At the same time, they must to an increasing extent meet the desire for efficient and direct lighting that exploits the LED light source s full potential. Over the years, Louis Poulsen has created numerous outdoor lighting solutions. We are now proud to present yet another luminaire for parks and paths, the LP Capsule, which has been designed in collaboration with Henning Larsen. The luminaire incorporates our well-known principles for pleasant atmospheric illumination in a modern LED lamp, and sets new standards for outdoor lighting.
Design to Shape Light At Louis Poulsen we shape light. We strive to create an atmosphere where you feel comfortable and relaxed. Every single surface and curve has been shaped to create precisely the right atmosphere LP Capsule is the result of this design philosophy. The streetlight is not just a luminaire that casts light on a square or path it also illuminates itself, making it an attractive and recognisable element that contributes to the overall aesthetics of the urban space both when switched off and when illuminated. By illuminating the fixture head, the light also has a lighthouse effect, helping people to see the direction of paths and roads and guiding them safely through an area instead of just providing downward light that can often only be seen from close range.
The designer LP Capsule has been developed in collaboration with Henning Larsen Architects, one of the world s most respected firms of architects, and which has won numerous awards worldwide for its projects. The architect Carsten Fischer from Henning Larsen Architects conceived for the initial design. Carsten Fischer has spearheaded projects all over the world, and his primary interest lies in the field between architecture and industrial design. Carsten Fischer says: As an architect, my task is to identify the inherent story of a thing or a building and add further detail so that the design ultimately acquires a coherent story. Success is hopefully reflected in the end result as in the case of LP Capsule, where the story is harmonious and self-evident.

Carefully conceived in every detail LP Capsule is characterised by a high degree of integration between the design elements. The fixture elegantly encircles the post for a more coherent solution. Viewed from above, the light consists of two circles a large round lamp and a smaller round post where the tangents connect the two circles to form a simple geometric harmonious look. The basic idea was to create a cylindrical capsule, with the light source inside a single cylinder, which is in turn inside a larger opal cylinder. This is the source of the direct downward light, but by creating distance between the inner and outer cylinders, the fixture shines surplus light into the gap. Here it is reflected, illuminating the outer cylinder, which glows like a halo around the light source in the middle. This reduces glare and provides a smoother transition to the surrounding environment.
