This months Meeting info: Date: September 11, 2013 Location: Holiday Inn 310 Pearl Street NW Grand Rapids, MI 49504 Speaker: Eric Truskoski Bradford White Subject: 2015 Dept. of Energy Water Heater Standard Changes Board Meeting 4:15PM Social 5:00 PM Dinner 5:30PM Meeting to follow Welcome to another new and exciting year, seems like a short summer(maybe because winter lasted for ever). We are starting off with our first meeting on the 11 th of September, our topic will be 2015 Dept. of Energy Water Heater Standard changes. Chuck Shoudel has worked hard and we will have some great topics this year, we have the 2014 ASPE Convention & Expo in Chicago, our annual Christmas party, also we are working on a possible tour of another brewery. Stay tuned. We had a good year last year, our attendance was good, our membership was down a little from the year before. We would like to continue to add some new members, get some of the old members that stopped coming to start coming out again. What a great time to learn something new, refresh something you already new, meet some old friends and meet some new ones. If anybody as any good ideas on how to make it work, please let us know. We have some great programs coming up this year, so tell your coworkers to come out and check us out. I would like to thank everybody for making time to come to our monthly meetings. And thanks to our sponsors generosity we will be giving away some extra goodies again this year. -Don Cost: $25 per meal

2013-2014 2014 ASPE Western Michigan Meetings 3 Let me begin this article by expressing what an honor it is to be your ASPE Region 2 Affiliate Liaison. For the past few years it has been a goal of mine to reach out to every chapter that makes up our Great Lakes Region. May 30 th & 31 st of this year I attended the Region 2 Presidents meeting held in Indianapolis, IN. It was hosted by our Central Indiana Chapter. They did a wonderful job making everyone feel at home and amongst friends. During our annual meeting, I volunteered to write a monthly newsletter article not just for the ASPE Eastern Michigan Chapter where I reside but to all our chapters. Writing is one way for me to communicate to you; visiting each chapter is another. The latter makes for better twoway conversation and interaction but the logistics are tougher. Before I start making travel plans across our Region though, how about we try and introduce ourselves at ASPE s 50 th Anniversary Celebration during the 2014 Convention (20 th -24 th ) and Expo (22 nd -23 rd ) in September at the McCormick Place in Chicago? I ll be there walking the show, talking with engineers, manufactures, regulators, other certifying bodies and/or working in the NSF booth (#530). I ll be interested to know what topics and subjects you d like to read about. A plumbing engineer references plumbing standards every day; have you ever wondered how a standard is written? How are they revised? You might have questions concerning performance testing of kitchen and lavatory faucets, shower heads, or thermostatic mixing valves. It might surprise you to learn that the amount of water allowed to leak from a PE piping system servicing a population of 100,000 per year is ZERO; for PVC pipe it s 12,059,942 gallons and for ductile iron pipe it s 13,340,643 gallons! All the while we re looking at ways to save drops of water at the end of our faucet. As an industry we can do much better and by working together we will. I m hoping to hear from you over the next few months on topics you d like to have addressed. I d like to get your input so we can start a dialogue in print prior to me meeting you in person. Let me conclude by congratulating ASPE on their 50 th Anniversary. The progress that has been made over these years by plumbing engineers as well as those who write and enforce the plumbing codes is astonishing. The importance of plumbing standards and the licensed professional plumbers who follow the proper installation method is paramount, as more lives have been saved by the plumbing profession than by any other. Please feel free to contact me at: Dann Holmes ASPE Region 2 Affiliate Liaison NSF International Business Unit Manager dholmes@nsf.org or (734) 214-6222 What about plastic pipe and fittings? What kind of tests do these materials really go through? Can you trust them as a substitute for steel pipe or ductile iron pipe? What affect does chlorine or chloramines have? Will allowing

Volume 28, number 1 VP Technical Tom Tom Kingshott 4 This month s speaker will be Eric Truskoski. Eric is with Bradford White and works in their engineering department. Eric will be covering the 2015 Dept. of Energy Water Heater Standard Changes. See you there. Chuck Shoudel

VP Legislative Report Paula Leatherman 5 Welcome back to a new ASPE season. Below I am stealing information from the ICC enews regarding Significant Code Changes, I hope it will be of interest to you. CHANGE TYPE: Modification CHANGE SUMMARY: The use of a waste connector and sealing gasket is now permitted as an acceptable means to connect floor outlet plumbing fixtures, allowing for water closet installations that are provided with a gasketed waste tube outlet connection. 2012 CODE: 405.4 Floor and Wall Drainage Connections. Connections between the drain and floor outlet plumbing fixtures shall be made with a floor flange or a waste connector and sealing gasket. The waste connector and sealing gasket joint shall comply with the joint tightness test of ASME A112.4.3 and shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer s installation instructions. The flange shall be attached to the drain and anchored to the structure. Connections between the drain and wall-hung water closets shall be made with an approved extension nipple or horn adaptor. The water closet shall be bolted to the hanger with corrosion-resistant bolts or screws. Joints shall be sealed with an approved elastomeric gasket, flange-to-fixture connection complying with ASME A112.4.3 or an approved setting compound. CHANGE SIGNIFICANCE: Historically, a flanged outlet connection for floor-mounted water closets has been the only acceptable method for making the connection between the drain and a floor outlet plumbing fixture. Connections of this type are typical of water closets designed for the North American market. The recognition of a waste connector and sealing gasket allows for another acceptable type of water closet connection method that will make more water closet products available to designers and installers. The new allowance recognizes this commonly used international method of connection. The connection arrangement consists of a waste tube connector on the water closet that is inserted into an elastomeric gasket. The waste tube and gasket are then inserted into the drain pipe opening at the floor line, and the gasket provides the seal between the water closet s waste tube and the drain pipe. The water closet fixture is then anchored directly to the floor using mounting brackets or fasteners. These anchors are often concealed to allow for a smooth, sanitary exterior interface to the floor. This design is used almost exclusively in Europe and other locations worldwide, and offers many advantages over wax-ring flange seals. ASME A112.4.3, a standard already referenced in the IPC and the International Residential Code (IRC), requires that the connection be leak-tight to pres- sures up to 10 psi. Such water closet designs are available in a wide range of rough-in dimensions.

VP Education Paula Leatherman 6 Happy Fall! We are working to put together an early Spring seminar; stay tuned for details. A great source for continuing education for plumbing engineers is the ASPE web site; the Read, Learn, Earn section at http://aspe.org/content/read-learn learn-earn has very good education resources for anyone and is a great source for CEU's, which are free to mem- bers.'
