MARKET SIZE 1.1 Market Segmentation 1.1.1 By Type Of Service MSI believe that both the UK market for static guarding and the market for mobile security services have increased throughout the review period. The UK market for static guarding grew by 5% between 2000 and 2004, to reach 1.56 billion ( 2.31 billion). Static guarding services accounted for the largest proportion of the UK manned security market during the review period. However, the market for mobile security services experienced a 55% growth between 2000 and 2004, albeit from a relatively low starting level, to reach 0.17 billion ( 0.25 billion). Mobile security services increased its proportional importance to the total market from 7% in 2000, to reach 10% in 2004. The following table illustrates the trends within the UK manned security market, by type of service, between 2000 and 2004. TABLE 1: THE UK MARKET FOR MANNED SECURITY, BY TYPE OF SERVICE, Unit: Type Of Service 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 Static Guarding Mobile Security Services Total Source: billion Trade and MSI estimates MSI believe that static guarding has remained the most commonly used type of manned security service throughout the review period due to the fact that there is constantly a physical presence on site. This reassures clients that if any problems do occur there is someone who can deal with them immediately, rather than waiting for mobile or police response, by which time the crime may have been committed and the perpetrator may have escaped. Furthermore, a physical presence on site can also act as a deterrent to crime and opportunistic thieves, therefore helping to minimise the need for police involvement or confrontation. Trade sources report that demand for mobile security services has grown at a much higher rate than static security services throughout the review period. This can be attributed to a variety of reasons including: an increase in use of alarm response and key holding services due to the introduction of the APCO policy, which means that police officers will not respond
MARKET SIZE In-house personnel are still used by a variety of companies for several reasons. The use of in-house security can lead to lower expenditure on security because they do not need to be licensed. However, this could lead to the possibility that the staff employed will not work to as high professional standards as those security officers employed by private security companies. 1.1.2 By End User Sector MSI believe that the largest end user market in the UK manned security market is the commercial sector, which accounted for 40% of the market in value terms in 2004. The warehousing and distribution sector represented a further 21% of the total market in 2004. The retail end user market accounted for a proportional value of 20% in 2004, compared with 19% in 2000. Furthermore, the public and civil end user market s proportional value represented 10% in 2004. MSI believe that the industrial end user market has declined in proportional terms during the review period, to just 9% of the manned security market in 2004, compared with 11% in 2000. The following table illustrates the trends in the UK manned security market, by type of end user, between 2000 and 2004. TABLE 2: THE UK MARKET FOR MANNED SECURITY, BY END USER SECTOR, Unit: End User Sector 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 Commercial Warehousing & Distribution Retail Public & Civil Industrial Total Source: billion Trade and MSI estimates Trade sources report that the market for manned security fluctuates in seasonal patterns. Summer is extremely busy because of outdoor events, and because people are on holidays and so demand for manned security services from the commercial and retail sectors that are open to the public increases. Demand also increases at Christmas, during the Easter and to some extent during other school holidays such as half terms.
