OCTOBER 2002 President's Message Fall is here and we should be hardening off our rhododendrons. No fertilizers and if your soil perks well, reduce watering to 1/3 of summer schedule; if your soils are heavy or retain moisture, stop watering altogether. Good time to start moving and planting new rhododendrons. Now that some of your plants have grown quicker and larger than you anticipated plan to move them and open up new areas for planting. As long as you have lawn you have room for more rhododendrons. Double dig lawn and add lots of the new compost you have made over the summer. This is the last month that you can take cuttings of rhododendrons if you hope to root them outdoors; look for late growth that may still be on the tender side. A couple of items which require your assistance. Terry Richmond has agreed to coordinate another "Ucluelet Rhododendron Donation Drive". If you have any rhododendrons to donate to Ucluelet in memory of George Fraser please let us know. We visited these areas this spring and our plants are looking good. To assist in our fund raising and promote our club your executive feels that we should have a Raffle again. One or two volunteers are needed to take on this worthwhile project. Let us know at the meeting if you can assist. Richard. PROPOSED PORTLAND GARDEN TOUR May 17, 18, 19, 2003 (Victoria Day Weekend) In previous years a group of rhododendron enthusiasts and friends from the lower mainland have visited spectacular gardens in Victoria and Nanaimo (2002), Whidby Island and the Olympic Peninsula (2001) and Parksville and Tofino (2000). Next year we are looking at organizing a trip to the magnificent gardens in Portland which is surely the garden capital of North America. There are many extraordinarily fine gardens in Portland and the surrounding district, including an exceptional internationally renowned Japanese garden and also an exceptional Chinese garden. In addition, there are the well-known Crystal Springs garden, Cecil Smith Rhododendron Garden and the Oregon horticultural growers garden on 157 acres. It is anticipated that the group will leave Vancouver early Saturday a.m. and travel leisurely to Portland visiting interesting gardens on the way in order to break up the drive. The group will overnight in Portland for two nights and return on Monday, again visiting gardens en route to Vancouver. We would expect to arrive back in Vancouver in the early evening. The anticipated cost would be about $325.00 Canadian bearing in mind that the hotel accommodation will have to be paid for in US dollars. Details remain to be worked out and finalized. We would anticipate that members from the Portland ARS Chapter would assist with the planning arrangements. If you have the slightest interest, without any commitment at this time, please let me know at the number below. If there are any interested from Vancouver Island they would be more than welcome to join us. WILD PROFUSION: THREE YEARS AMONG THE FLOWERS OF EASTERN AFRICA Dr. Hannah Nadel October 10,2002 Hannah Nadel received her PhD in entomology in 1985 from the University of California, Riverside. During a later assignment in southern Florida, she combined her love for plants and insects by studying the pollination of tropical fruit plants known as custard apples. A strong interest in pollination biology and travel led her to identify plants in a variety of habitats on many continents. In 1999 she worked for a year on a beekeeping study in the war-torn state of Tigrai in northern Ethiopia, then took up other temporary positions in Kenya to research control of the tsetse fly and conservation of agricultural biodiversity. While there, she also volunteered as photographer for a pollination study where she sometimes found herself in the path of elephants. During her three-and-a-half years in eastern Africa, she photographed many beautiful and unusual wildflowers from sea level to Afroalpine habitats at 13,000 feet. She enjoys sharing her extensive collection of slides with professional and hobby groups specializing in natural history and geography. 4

Revised Web Pages for Nanaimo Chapter By Craig Clarke At the September meeting, our club executive approved the purchase of web hosting services from TechNet Computers Inc. at a cost of $80 per year. Our web site was hosted formerly by Hedgerows but we have been unable to update the information for several years. TechNet Computers Inc. is now hosting a site for District One (British Columbia chapters of ARS) called http://www.rhodos.ca/. At the District President s meeting held at Milner Gardens in August, Richard White learned of this new site and about their offer to host sites for individual chapters as well. You can navigate to our new pages by going to the District 1 site and following the links to Nanaimo or go to it directly by entering the link: http://rhodos.ca/nanaimo/. I have updated the contact information on the site and will be bringing the other information up-to-date as well. If you have any suggestions for improving the site, please let me know. One idea would be to post the newsletter in pdf format so that members can download it at their convenience. The winner of our bursary this year is a young man by the name of Chris Stansfield. Chris is described as energetic: biking to school, acting as a class representative, and running a business in his spare time. He also apparently has a great sense of humour. Congratulations, Chris on your achievement. It s that time of the year again. Don t forget to pay your dues 8
