Change of Meeting Time: Since we from time-to-time have a problem in leaving the Arboretum by 10pm, it has been suggested that we start our meetings at 7:15pm rather than 7:30pm. The Board would like to hear your thoughts on this matter at the next meeting. Personal Notes: The Club sends get well wishes to Rita Gerlach. Rita s presence has been missed at recent meetings as well as the Winter Show. She is on the road to recovery and we should see her soon. See Bill Gerlach, or send your check to him at 719 S. Albertson, Covina, CA 91723. Dues are only $12 for a single membership, $15 for two people at the same address. Your prompt payment will make it easier on those keeping records and will speed up the issuance of a new roster. The Club Winter Cactus Show and Sale: The Winter Show has come and gone. The show was a great success, with nearly 900 plants on display. For the first time ever, the weather didn t cooperate, and attendance was lower than we would have liked. Sales were down significantly. Forty-eight people entered plants, with succulents beating cacti by about 150 plants. There were 23 Novice entrants, 12 Advanced and 13 Open. Congratulations to Horace Birgh and Tommy Dodson, who took the high points novice succulents, high points novice cacti and sweepstakes. In the advanced Division, Carol and Paul Maker took high points advanced cacti and Alan Hooker took high points advanced succulents. In the open Division Charles and Joann Spotts took high points open cacti and Jim Hanna took high points open succulents. The rest of the trophy winners appear below. 2

Saturday night included a great dinner from Richard Jones Pit Barbeque and an auction with some wonderful bargains. This show couldn t happen without the great support of many from the club. The Show Committee wants to thank all those that worked on set-up and tear down, those who kept us fed the entire time, the clerks and judges, and all those who worked on sales, plant holding, back gate guarding and hospitality table, and all the other jobs necessary to put on a show. The most important additions we make at the show are new members, and we got several at this show, and several more who may attend one of the next few meetings. San Gabriel Valley Cactus and Succulent Society Cactus and Succulent of the Month November 2006 - Variegates generally weaker, and more susceptible to fungus, sunburn and other defects. A large well grown variegate of any species is truly an achievement. Great Variegates Variegated Gymnocalycium All variegates are mutants. Something has gone wrong with the cellular structure of the leaf or stem growth tip (apical meristem) of the plant. As a result of this mutation, chlorophyll is missing from some or all layers of the plant epidermis. Variegation is known in most plant families, and variegated plants have a place in most gardens. The bright yellow and white of variegated foliage adds pattern and rhythm to many herbaceous borders. In succulent plants variegates are generally separated from normal plants, and compete against other variegates to put them on an equal footing. Variegated plants grow slower and are generally smaller than non-variegates of the same species. Colored areas are also Agave A striking form of Agave turncata, a common garden Agave is well known, but since it is slow to propagate, is not generally available. There are several forms of variegated Agave americana. There are forms with a green center stripe and yellow edges, a yellow stripe and green edges, a green center and white edges, a white center and green edges, yellow centers and crinkled edges, random yellow and green banding, and dozens more. Other species of Agaves have also produce variegates, with the same variety of variegation. Cacti - variegates can be found in many genera. Gymnocalycium are the most often seen, but some columnar variegates and some Ferocactus variegates are also common in cultivation. The odd variegate appears in many seedling batches. Variegated Turbinicarpus, Astrophytum, Matucana and Ariocarpus have been seen at some of recent shows. Many of these are artificially propagated by grafts. The famous Red Caps and Yellow Caps are Gymnocalycium or Lobivia variegates that have no chlorophyll at all, and live only by being grafted onto a root stock. 6

These are harder to grow well than they appear. white species, yellow species, even the occasional pink can be found. There are dozens of variegated Gasterias shown at our shows, and available from all of the local vendors. Look for Gasteria Little Warty, a nice white and green species, as well as many of the yellow and green species such as the Japanese hybrid Gasteria shozodan, shown above. Variegated Monstrose Lobivia Sansevieria - There are dozens of named and unnamed varieties. Look for Bantel s Sensation, Futura, Silver Moon, Silver Princess, and variegated varieties of some of the cylindrical forms. Unlike normal Sansevierias, these can be difficult to grow. They will not tolerate cold and wet conditions. Sansevieria variegates can only be propagated through the tuber. Cuttings of the leaves will root, but will almost always revert to an unvariegated from. On the other hand, normal Sansevierias will often put out a variegated pup. These should be removed from the main plant and grown on their own roots to preserve the variegation. Euphorbia - A number of columnar variegates are available, E. ammak, being the one most often seen. There are also some cristate and monstrose variegates as well. Variegated Haworthia attenuata x pumilla Gasteria shozodan Gasteria - The Japanese have made an art of Gasteria and Haworthia variegate cultivation. Read the 2000 CSSA Journal for just a sampling of the wonderful cultivars. Miniature Haworthia - Gray Ghost is a Haworthia retusa variegate. There are several Haworthia limifolia variegates that look as if they were painted with mustard. Shown above is a variegated hybrid between Haworthia attenuata and Haworthia pumilla. Offsets are produced on the flower stalks, these are variegated, as are the flowers themselves. G. Rowley, Teratopia Tom Glavich October 2006 7
