Issue 19 Profile TRANQUIL PLACE TO RECOVER providing a safe and calm environment for patients EXTENSION OF PRIVACY London terraced property replaces small kitchen with larger open space FAIRMONT HOTEL 17th Century oak flooring for an exclusive venue

A TRANQUIL PLACE TO RECOVER ARCHITECT: OBERLANDERS ARCHITECTS PRODUCT: SCOTLARCH Purpose-built facility combines striking modern design and high-quality materials, within a constrained budget. Occupying a beautiful rural setting one mile west of Cupar in Fife, Stratheden Hospital s new 3.7m Intensive Psychiatric Care Unit (IPCU) provides a safe and calm environment for patients experiencing acute episodes of mental illness. Designed by Oberlanders Architects, the purpose-built facility combines striking modern design and high-quality materials, within a constrained budget. The architect created an open rain screen solution for the exterior, with full and half board Russwood Scotlarch creating a dynamic effect that integrates with the surrounding landscape. The locallysourced timber has an abundance of knots, adding to its rich natural character, and the client selected untreated boards to allow the wood to fade to a silvery grey, complementing the rural setting surrounding the site. Because the building is single-storey, the client was able to use full-length boards, reducing waste from offcuts. Balancing design aspirations with budget constraints was a key challenge of the build, and Russwood suggested a series of finishes and specifications that kept the build on track. Russwood were fantastic at offering advice and presenting potential solutions as the design developed, said Paul Gilligan of Oberlanders. THE ARCHITECT CREATED AN OPEN RAIN SCREEN SOLUTION FOR THE EXTERIOR, WITH FULL AND HALF BOARD RUSSWOOD SCOTLARCH CREATING A DYNAMIC EFFECT THAT INTEGRATES WITH THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE. The finished build is a subtle addition to the Fife countryside, and a tranquil space for patients to begin their recovery. WEST COAST VERNACULAR ARCHITECT: ANNIE KENYON ARCHITECTS PRODUCTS: ENGINEERED CROSS SAWN OAK FLOORING; SILA A/B IN RW014 PROFILE When Annie Kenyon Architects was challenged to create new buildings on the sporting estate of Glen Mhor on the Scottish west coast, the brief was to provide modern facilities in the vernacular style, using quality local materials that enhanced the natural surroundings. Russwood cladding and flooring provided the perfect solution. Vertical board on board Siberian larch cladding is both durable and contemporary in style, and weathers to a light grey that sits subtly in the wider landscape. The addition of a horizontal rain screen at the North elevation provides shelter whilst softening the profile of the building. The main contractor, Kishorn Specialist RUSSWOOD OFFERED OUR CLIENT CHOICE AND QUALITY. THE RANGE OF FLOORING ALLOWED OUR CLIENT TO CHOOSE A BOARD WHICH WOULD CONTRAST AND BRING WARMTH TO THE CRISP INTERNAL FINISHES. Contractors, added a quality of workmanship and attention to detail that greatly enhanced the final build. Inside, Russwood Cross-Sawn Oak flooring adds a sense of authenticity and history to the otherwise modern interior. This bespoke flooring is hand finished using traditional woodworking techniques, leaving knots raised and tool marks visible for a distinctive feel. Annie Kenyon Architects said: Russwood offered our client choice and quality. The range of flooring allowed our client to choose a board which would contrast and bring warmth to the crisp internal finishes. Russwood provide excellent customer service and their technical team are always on hand to assist with queries and design details. A WARM WELCOME AT FAIRMONT INTERIOR DESIGNERS: RPW DESIGN PRODUCTS: 17TH CENTURY, ANTIQUE FLOORING With its cliff top views and lavish surroundings, the five-star Fairmont Hotel in St Andrews prides itself on offering guests a unique and luxurious getaway. For an exclusive venue like the Fairmont, first impressions are crucial, and they don t come much more impressive than Russwood s beautifully aged 17th Century oak flooring. Running from the hotel entrance through to the Kittocks Bar, the flooring creates a sense of flow between the two areas, adding tone and texture to the design aesthetic. The product also has the benefit of being highly durable, making it an ideal choice for this high traffic area. BY REPLACING THE EXISTING TILED FLOORING WITH RUSSWOOD S AUTHENTICALLY AGED OAK BOARDS, THE DESIGNER CREATED A SENSE OF HISTORY AND WARMTH THAT DRAWS VISITORS INSIDE. Tasked with revamping the hotel entrance, RPW Design settled on a style that encapsulates a sense of place, making the most of the stunning sea views and local character. They removed the dividing wall between the reception and bar, adding a copper coffee bar to create a more open, sociable space. By replacing the existing tiled flooring with Russwood s authentically aged oak boards, the designer created a sense of history and warmth that draws visitors inside. AN EXTENSION OF PRIVACY ARCHITECT: BRADLEY VAN DER STRAETEN ARCHITECTS PRODUCT: SILA A/B BOARD ON BOARD In the London hamlet of Stoke Newington, known for its generous open green spaces, the owners of a terraced property on Yoakley Road envisioned replacing their small kitchen with a larger open space that engages with their garden. The result is a new timber-clad volume, set back from the rear of the existing terrace. This has created a new courtyard that allows the light to flood into the property s existing ground floor. Enlarging the new kitchen into a larger space was achieved by relocating the ground floor bathroom into a new upstairs extension. As well as opening up to natural light and creating two sides of outdoor space accessible from the new kitchen, the extension also creates a private outdoor space that isn t overlooked by neighbours. The innovative aspect of the design meant that most of the new construction remains separate from the existing fabric of the building for minimum impact on the existing property and the rest of the terrace alongside it. The lap method of the larch cladding was inspired by Scandinavian boat-houses, while the lightweight timber walls contrast with the local space to unify old and new. THE RESULT IS A NEW TIMBER-CLAD VOLUME, SET BACK FROM THE REAR OF THE EXISTING TERRACE. THIS HAS CREATED A NEW COURTYARD THAT ALLOWS THE LIGHT TO FLOOD INTO THE PROPERTY S EXISTING GROUND FLOOR. ISLAND HISTORY BROUGHT TO LIFE ARCHITECT: SHAUNA CAMERON ARCHITECTS PRODUCT: CHATEAU NUT CHARACTER PRIME FLOORING The Atlantic Islands Centre on Cullipool, Isle of Luing, breathes new life into a fragile island community, an achievement recognised with the Scottish Civic Trust My Place Award 2016 and the Herald Society Community Project of the Year 2016. Commissioned by the Isle of Luing Community Trust as a new home for the Luing History Group, the Centre houses an exhibition area, gallery, work spaces, café and shop. INSIDE, THE CRISP WHITE WALLS AND OVERSIZED WINDOWS ARE SOFTENED BY RUSSWOOD S CHATEAU NUT CHARACTER PRIME FLOORING, WHICH ADDS WARMTH AND CHARACTER. Architect Shauna Cameron created a design that reflects the scale and character of the original slate quarry building, retaining features such as the hipped slate roof, thick stone walls and large dormer, which now offers stunning views to Scarba, Jura, the Garvellachs and beyond. Inside, the crisp white walls and oversized windows are softened by Russwood s Chateau Nut character prime flooring, which adds warmth and character whilst having the thermal properties suited to the Centre s underfloor heating. The client said: As usual Russwood s expertise in using the right kind of flooring was crucial to arriving at the best solution and appearance. The Trust and everyone who uses or visits the Centre comments on the flooring it gives such a comfortable feeling. THE PICTURE OF HEALTH ARCHITECT: HOSKINS ARCHITECTS PRODUCTS: SILA A+ AND SILA A/B (FIRE TREATED); CHATEAU SMOKED, WHITE PRIME GRADE OAK FLOORING Located in the Clarkston area, in the south of Glasgow, the award winning Eastwood Health and Care Centre is one of Scotland s newest public healthcare buildings. A range of health and social care services, including five local GP practices, come under one roof for the first time in this modern centre. Hoskins Architects completed the project with contractor Morgan Sindall for hub West Scotland, and the three-storey building is occupied by East Renfrewshire Council's Social Care Partnership and Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS. Internally, Russwood Chateau smoked oak flooring provides a high quality surface to the staff common area. The innovative and flexible spaces are organised around a central atrium with views into two internal courtyards, opening up the space and allowing a flow of high levels of natural daylight and ventilation. Complementing this blend of interior and exterior timber, Russwood Siberian Larch Cladding provides a clean and durable finish which softens and compliments the textured masonry elevations. Martin Baillie of Hoskins Architects commented that, Russwood provided technical advice throughout the project; their knowledgeable and friendly staff are always easy to deal with and happy to assist. Their expertise allows specifications to be made with confidence in the longevity and durability of the product and the appropriateness of fixings and detailing. COMPLEMENTING THIS BLEND OF INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR TIMBER, RUSSWOOD SIBERIAN LARCH CLADDING PROVIDES A CLEAN AND DURABLE FINISH WHICH SOFTENS AND COMPLIMENTS THE TEXTURED MASONRY ELEVATIONS.
