SECTION 1 INTRODUCTION 1 General 1.1 Objective The objective of this class programme (CP) is to describe the type approval (TA) scheme for glass fibre rovings. The general requirements for obtaining DNV GL type approval certificate is given in class programme DNVGL CP 0338 Type approval scheme. The procedures and requirements described in this CP are applicable for obtaining TA certificate based on requirements given in the Society's rules and standards, e.g. RU SHIP Pt.2 Ch.3. Section 1 Guidance note: This class programme is not applicable for obtaining EU marine equipment directive (MED) certificates. Visit www.dnvgl.com for information on MED certification. ---e-n-d---of---g-u-i-d-a-n-c-e---n-o-t-e--- 1.2 Scope This CP gives a description of the procedures and requirements related to documentation, design and type testing applicable for TA of glass fibre rovings. TA is based on compliance with material requirements given in the Society s rules and/or other regulations and standards. The CP describes the applicable material requirements and how to document compliance with the requirements in order to obtain a TA certificate for the material. This includes, where relevant, technical requirements for how the type tests shall be performed. 1.3 Application RU SHIP Pt.2 Ch.3 require that glass fibre rovings are type approved in accordance with this CP for components to be installed on vessels/constructions classed with the Society. A TA certificate in accordance with this CP will confirm compliance with the requirements given in the rules as specified in RU SHIP Pt.2 Ch.3. The TA certificate will not confirm compliance with requirements given in other parts of the rules. In case additional requirements given in other parts of the rules may be covered by the TA certificate, this shall be specified in the application for TA and will be stated in the TA certificate. 1.4 References ISO 3344: Reinforcement products Determination of moisture content ISO 1172: Determination of the textile-glass and mineral-filler content - Calcination methods ISO 1887: Determination of combustible-matter content ISO 1888: Determination of average diameter ISO 1889: Reinforcement yarns - Determination of linear density ISO 9163: Rovings - Manufacture of test specimens and determination of tensile strength of impregnated rovings ISO 527-1: Plastics - Determination of tensile properties Part 1: General principles ISO 527-5: Plastics - Determination of tensile properties Part 5: Test conditions for unidirectional fibrereinforced plastic composites ISO 14130: Fibre-reinforced plastic composites - Determination of apparent interlaminar shear strength by short-beam method. 1.5 Assessment of TA documentation The type approval documentation is assessed by the Society to verify that it is in conformity with the specified requirements. 1.6 Issuance of TA certificates When the assessment of type approval documentation and type testing is successfully completed a type approval certificate will be issued to the manufacturer of the product. The certificate is normally given a validity period of five (5) years. Section 1 1.7 Application for renewal after five (5) years Application for renewal should be submitted to the Society not later than three (3) months before expiry date of the type approval certificate. The application shall include updated type approval documentation as specified in Sec.2. Upon receipt of the application, the Society will perform a renewal assessment with main objective to verify that the product properties, material composition and the product marking are not altered since issuance of the type approval certificate. An approval of manufacturer certificate (see DNVGL CP 0427 Manufacturer of Fibre Reinforcements) which is still valid for at least one year shall be available. Guidance note: A valid AoM exempts from the obligation concerning retention and renewal procedures listed in the class programme DNVGL CP 0338 Type Approval scheme. ---e-n-d---of---g-u-i-d-a-n-c-e---n-o-t-e--- If there, since last issuance of the type approval certificate, has been any change in the relevant standards or in the Society s rules, new assessment of product and type tests may be required. 2 Documentation For TA of glass fibre rovings the following documentation*) shall be submitted by the manufacturer at initial type approval and updated at renewal: type designation or product name with list of variants that shall be included in the type approval and stated on the type approval certificate the Society s approval of manufacturer certificate (see class programme DNVGL CP 0427 Manufacturer of Fibre Reinforcements) which is still valid for at least one year name of the manufacturer, to be listed on the type approval certificate. The following shall be specified: manufacturer's name full address of all production sites web address person in charge mailing address phone and fax numbers manufacturer's product specification**)/technical data sheet with following information for all variants: product description (e.g. type of glass) field of application and special limitations of the product linear density***) moisture content***) loss on ignition***) filament diameter***) Class programme DNVGL-CP-0082. compatibility to matrix systems storage conditions, storage life, processing guideline description of quality control arrangement test reports with type test results for all variants including a summary. The type test results shall be submitted to the Society in form of a test report according to ISO 17025 and the additional requirements given in te relevant test standard for evaluation description and information regarding of packing and marking of the product. *) Documentation shall be in the English language **) nominal values and tolerances for all properties, as specified by the manufacturer ***) will verified during the audit for approval of manufacturer prior to the issuance of the type approval certificate. Section 1 3 Scope of type approval This type approval programme includes requirements for glass fibre rovings. A type approval certificate issued by the Society will be valid for one type of tow of the current product with the possibility to include variants. type: how the glass fibre rovings are formed i.e. is it a direct roving or assembled roving etc. The chemical composition of the glass and the sizing variant: roving with the same chemical composition and the same sizing but with different tex and/or filament diameter. As a minimum, the following information/properties will be printed in the type approval certificate: type of glass type of sizing matrix compatibility with or without twist filament diameter TEX. Deviation from the requirements may be accepted on a case-by-case basis and will be stated in the certificate. Class programme DNVGL-CP-0082. Edition December 2015 Page 7
SECTION 2 REQUIREMENTS 1 General requirements 1.1 Chemical composition The glass shall be of E-glass quality where the sum of Na 2 O and K 2 O shall be less than 1% and meets the following requirements: Section 2 Table 1 E-Glass chemical composition SiO 2 52 56% CaO 16 25% Al 2 O 3 12 16% B 2 O 3 6 12% Na 2 O + K 2 O 0 1% MgO 0 6% Fibres made of other glass qualities such as E-CR-glass, S-glass may be used subject to special agreement. For direct rovings with an average filament diameter not exceeding 19µm no further testing as specified in Table 3 is needed. Sizing of silane compound shall be used. The sizing shall be matched to the thermosetting resin, in order to ensure adequate material properties, also under the influence of media. 2 Requirements for production and quality control arrangement The requirements given in this section shall be checked during the AoM audit (see DNVGL CP 0427). The manufacturer shall have a quality system that meets ISO 9001 standards, or equivalent. If this quality standard is not fulfilled, the extent of testing and surveys will be considered separately. Quality control arrangement, including requirements given in Table 1, shall be checked with respect to the following at initial approval and at renewal: control on incoming materials test equipment, test methods, test samples, and references to standards used system for identification traceability and marking system production test reports from delivery testing. The extent of the manufacturer's quality control during production shall as a minimum be as listed in Table 2 to ensure the product quality. The assessment of type test results verifies compliance with the requirements and determines the values to be stated on the type Class programme DNVGL-CP-0082. Edition December 2015 Page 9
approval certificate (if applicable). Type tests as specified in [3], shall be carried out and verified in one of the following ways: at an accredited and independent laboratory or a laboratory accepted by the Society at the manufacturer s premises in the presence of a surveyor after consultation with the Society. It is recommended to test at external testing laboratories due to the long duration of some tests. 4 Requirements for marking of product The product or package shall be marked. The marking shall at least include the following information: manufacturer s name and address or trade mark production plant product name production date batch number. The marking shall be carried out in such a way that it is visible, legible and indelible. The marking of product shall enable traceability to the product. Section 2 Class programme DNVGL-CP-0082.
