Introduction The purpose of the Epi-Care mobile epilepsy alarm is to ensure severe seizures are not overseen. Epi-Care mobile recognizes convulsions, as example the unconscious movement of the arms during a generalized tonic/clonic seizure, also known as grand mal seizures. When the Epi-Care mobile sensor recognizes convulsions, the accompanying smartphone app calls a caretakers phone. The alarm can be used all day, during sleep and day hours, indoor and outdoor. The alarm does not register tonic seizures or seizure with a few jerks, turning of the head or similar movement pattern. The alarm should not be used as the only aid for monitoring patients, where human supervision from a medical point of view is necessary. Epi-Care mobile consists of a sensor shaped like an armband and a smartphone with the Epi- Care mobile application. The application is developed for use on smartphones with operating systems from Android 5.0.2 to Android 6.x.x. The sensor is carried on the left or right wrist, just like a wrist watch. The sensor measures the movement of the arm in three dimensions and continuously calculates if the movements are of epileptic or natural origin. The sensor and smartphone communicate wireless with each other. Alarm signals are send from the sensor to the smartphone, which then calls a caretaker. The smartphone continuously monitors if the sensor is in range and if the smartphone or sensor is running low on battery. The sensor and smartphone have a mutual range of 10 to 15 meters depending on the surroundings. GPS unit build into the smartphone can be used to locate the user when a seizure occurs outdoors. Epi-Care mobile can be used by adults and children above 10 years of age. Content of box Epi-Care mobile armband with sensor Adapter for the sensor Instructions for use Accessories The sensor has to be used with an approved Android based smartphone, which uses an app for handling control functions and calling caretakers. Contact your local vendor for an updated list of supported Android smartphones. Manual configuration of smartphone If a smartphone was not included in the purchase, the application will have to be retrieved from Danish Care Technology s web page. The application is free, maintained by Danish Care Technology and can be installed by opening www.danishcare.dk/apps with the smartphone s browser. Choose Epi-Care mobile, select your country and use the appropriate link in the shown tabel. Before the application can be installed, the smartphone has to be set to allow Unknown sources, this is controlled in the Security section of the smartphone settings. The supplier of the sensor has a list of approved smartphone models, if the alarm is used with a model not on the list, the functionality of the alarm cannot be guaranteed. Special note for Android 6+ phones: When starting app for the first time, it will ask for a series of permissions. These must be accepted for the alarm functionality to work correctly. Paring the sensor It is necessary to pair the sensor with the smartphone. Ensure the sensor is charged and start the application. The application will warn that it cannot find a paired sensor and will open a new window, searching for nearby sensors. This process can take up to 1 minute. Once it has successfully found one or more sensors in range, a list will appear with these sensors. Each sensor will have a signal strength indicator next to it, making it easier to determine which sensor you wish to pair with. Usually it is the one with the strongest signal, as that should be the one closest to you. Clicking on a sensor in the list will start the pairing procedure. When the pairing is successful, the sensor LED will blink red. The app will ask for confirmation on the sensor blinking and, if answered positively, the pairing procedure is finished. The app will automatically return to the main screen. If answered negatively, the list will clear and a new search will begin. Phone: +45 58 50 05 65 Page 4 of 17

Setting up Epi-Care mobile Sensor armband The sensor is worn like a wrist watch. It can be worn on either the left or right wrist. The armband must be strapped tightly in order to ensure the sensor follows the movement of the wrist. It is recommended to tighten the strap until only one finger is able to slip in between the sensor and skin. The sensor does not have to point in a specific direction. The sensor has to be charged before use, se instructions for charging the sensor on page 5. Smartphone Follow the instructions for using the smartphone. During the instructions a SIM card is inserted into the smartphone and it is assembled. Turn the smartphone on, start the Epi-Care mobile application and follow the on screen instructions. Charging Sensor The sensor is powered by a built-in battery, which has to be charged once a day. The battery is charged by using the supplied 5 Volt micro-usb charger. Take the armband off before charging the battery. Connect the charger to a 220 Volt outlet and put the micro-usb connector into the charger port on the sensor, the port is located opposite the pointy end of the sensor. The sensor blinks slowly with a yellow light when the battery is charging. The battery does not have to be fully discharged before charging. The sensor can be left in the charger longer than necessary without damaging the battery. The charge time is approximately 20 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes, depending on how discharged the battery is. When the sensor is unplugged from the charger, it will automatically start after a few seconds. The sensor does not have to be turned on or activated and will remain active until the battery is discharged. The sensor has to be recharged before use, if it has not been in use for over one day. Smartphone The smartphone should be left plugged into the charger when possible. A good rule is to always place the smartphone next to the user s bed and charge it when the user sleeps. Battery and charge time for the smartphone depends on how much it is used and the functions enabled in the application. The alarm does not work when the smartphone is off or discharged. The alarm does not work if the battery in the sensor is discharged. Phone: +45 58 50 05 65 Page 6 of 17

The Epi-Care mobile application The application has a notification icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen. The icon shows the condition of the application and the sensor. A short description of the current condition is available by swiping down from the top of the screen. The application can be opened either by selecting it in the pull down menu or by selecting it in the phone app launcher. The application menu The application shows if it is connected to the sensor and the battery level of the sensor in the upper half. The four icons in the lower half of the screen are used to navigate to the following areas of the application: 1. Alarming 2. Events 3. Setting 4. About Please notice it is always possible to hide the application by pressing the home button on your phone. It is possible to return to the previous screen by pressing the back button. If the back button is pressed in the main window, the app will be hidden, but still running. If the app is closed through the Android Recent Applications menu, the sensor will be disconnected briefly while the app s background processes are restarted. After a few seconds, the operation will return to normal. 1. Alarming This section is used to enter the number the application calls when an alarm occurs. It is possible to enter a back number, which is used if the alarm number does not respond. It is possible to write the users name in the User name field, the name will be used in all messages send from the application. Alarm calls can be delayed by moving the slider under the text Alarm delay seconds. This feature allows the user to cancel false alarms. Alarms are cancelled by pressing the power button on the smartphone a couple of times before the set delay time has passed. The application automatically returns to normal mode after an alarm has been cancelled. The call events triggered by an alarm are described in depth on page 9. The alarm does not work, when an alarm number has not been entered. Functionality of the alarm cannot be guaranteed, if the app is installed on a smartphone model that is not on the approved list. 2. Events The Epi-Care mobile application saved date and time for events related to the alarm. When the menu point called events is selected, the application shows a chronologic list of events. Further description of this function is available in the section called Reading events on page 9. 3. Settings The settings section allows controlling the application behaviour such as when a text message shall be send and specifying call locations. A longer description of each point is available on page 10. Run Epi-Care mobile: Controls if the application shall communicate with the sensor and call the alarm number when an alarm occurs. This point has to be selected when the alarm is in use. Low battery sms: Controls if the application shall send a message when the sensor or smartphone battery is close to being completely discharged. Missing sensor sms: Controls if the application shall send a message when it has lost the connection to the sensor. Protect settings: Used a code to protect all settings in the app, read more in the Protecting settings section. Alarm sms: Controls if the application shall send a message to the alarm number before calling, when an alarm occurs. Google Maps sms: Controls if the application shall send a message with a link to the location of the user, after it has called the alarm number. This function uses a combination of the GPS in the smartphone and a data connection to determine the location. The smartphone has to allow Location services and have an active data connection in order for this function to work. Locations: This function can be used to make the alarm contact different numbers depending on where the user is located. The function is described in the section called Controlling alarm locations on page 11. 4. About Shows an about screen for the application, this includes a version number for the app and other miscellaneous information. The alarm does not work, when Run Epi-Care mobile is not selected. Alarm calls The smartphone app gives of an alarm tone and calls the entered alarm number, when an alarm occurs. The caretaker with the phone receiving the call has to pick up the phone and hang up again in less than 30 seconds to confirm receiving the call. The call duration must be at least 1 second long, but still completed within the 30 seconds. If the app does not register calls being hanged up, it will call the backup number after two attempts. The smartphone is on speaker mode during alarm calls, enabling the caretaker to hear what is happening around the smartphone before hanging up. The smartphone will send text messages with each alarm, the messages depend on the chosen settings in the application. A maximum of four calls is performed, two for each number, if the calls are not answered. False alarms False alarms can be stopped by setting an alarm delay in ALARMING. It is not possible to stop the alarm calls if a delay has not been set. Alarms are cancelled by pressing the power button on the smartphone 3 times before the set delay time has passed. The application automatically returns to normal mode after an alarm has been cancelled. Recall after accepted alarm If either the alarm or the backup number has acknowledged the alarm, the application will call the number that accepted the alarm. This will happen after a small delay of 30 seconds. The application will put the smartphone in speaker mode. The call can be used to talk with the user or listen to what is happening in the room for an extended period of time. Reading events Events are shown in the order they have occurred, the most recent event is always at the top. Older events can be shown by scrolling down the list. If an event is selected, a detailed report for the event will be shown. It is possible to E-mail the shown list of events by selecting E-mail events and using the build in Gmail application. Changing shown events It is possible to change the shown list of events by pressing the button with the text SHOW ONLY ALARMS or SHOW ALL. When using the Email button, only the shown list or event will be e-mailed. Alarm events An alarm event can be marked as a false alarm. An alarm is marked as being false by selecting it and selecting MARK AS FALSE ALARM in the detailed view. Alarms that have been marked as false will not show up along with regular alarms. Picking the right settings Run Epi-Care mobile This setting should always be on, unless there is a special reason to disable it and turn the surveillance off. Low battery sms When the smartphone or sensor get close to being discharged, the smartphone will send a text message to the alarm number showing which of the two is in need of being charged. Having this setting on increases the user security and reduces the risk of the sensor or smartphone running out of charge when in use. The outline of the sensor icon on the main screen will appear yellow to indicate a problem has arisen. This setting requires the alarm number is able to receive text messages. Missing sensor sms When the app is unable to communicate with the sensor, either because the sensor is too far away or the sensor has run out of power, the app will send a sms to the alarm number with the user name and the text sensor missing. Having this setting on reduces the risk of the using the sensor when it is not connected to the smartphone. This setting requires the alarm number is able to receive text messages. Protect settings If there is a risk of the app settings being changed by accident, it is advised to activate protect settings. When this setting is activated, a numeric code of at least one digit has to be entered twice. All subsequent attempts to change a setting will require entering the same code before the change is saved. Remember to write the code down and store it somewhere safe. Alarm sms A regular sms will be send before an alarm call, when this setting is enabled. The send sms contains the text sensor alarm and the user name. This setting requires the alarm number is able to receive text messages. Google Maps sms When an alarm occurs and it has been acknowledged, the app will send a sms with a link to Google Maps showing where the user is to the caretaker that acknowledges the alarm. This type of message is useful for mobile users, but the messages have to be received on a smartphone capable of showing a map. The link has to be opened on the caretakers smartphone using a map app or build in browser. The smartphone will continue to improve the accuracy of the user s position after sending the message with the link, and the smartphone will send a new link if a significantly more accurate position is determined. Another link with an updated position is send, if a caretaker calls the users smartphone within five minutes after receiving an alarm call. GPS is not intended for indoor use and tall building can affect the determined position. This feature uses a lot of power and the accuracy of the results cannot be guaranteed. Use this feature to complement general knowledge of the user s location. This setting requires the caretaker acknowledging the alarm call uses a smartphone as well. Location based caretaker numbers Users that are often on the move and require different caretaker numbers depending on where the user is can use the Locations function. The smartphone has to allow Location services and have an active data connection in order for this function to work. The app will normally call the numbers entered in ALARMING, however the smartphone can be configured to call a different pair of numbers when the user is in a certain area. Creating a location allows specifying an area with an alternative set of numbers; each location requires specifying at least an area and an alarm number. Creating a new location A location is created by opening the application, selecting SETTINGS and then selecting ADD LOCATION, a set of on screen instructions will be shown and it may be necessary to install Google Play Services before a map is shown. The location area is selected using the on screen map. Touching a place on the map selects the centre of the area and the size of the area is controlled by using the on screen slider. Ensure the area is plenty big and press the CHOOSE AREA button when a sufficient area has been set. When the area has been selected, it has to be given a name and a set of telephone numbers that are contacted when the user is inside the area. Name: This is the name of the location, making it possible to remember what numbers are used where. Alarm number: The number the app will call first, when an alarm occurs in the selected area. Backup number: The Backup number the app will call, if the alarm number does not respond. If no backup number is set for a location, the app will call the backup number set in the regular alarm settings. Changing an existing location All location settings can be changed by selecting the location name in the location list and selecting EDIT LOCATION. Deleting a location A location can be deleted by selecting the location name in the location list and selecting DELETE LOCATION. Phone: +45 58 50 05 65 Page 11 of 17

Advice for daily use The Epi-Care mobile alarm can be used during sleep as well as day hours. The sensor has to be carried on the right or left wrist when the alarm is in use. If the sensor is placed on a night table during sleep, it will not be able to register seizures. Powerful repeated motions with the hand the sensor is strapped on to can trigger false alarms. Remove the sensor during tooth brushing or place it on the inactive arm. Repeated drumming on a table, clapping and similar motions can trigger false alarms as well. The sensor is not waterproof, only water resistant. The sensor can be worn when washing hands and can withstand dripping of water. The sensor and smartphone may not be worn during a shower or be lowered into water. Find a daily event where the sensor can charge for an hour while the user is supervised. Leave the smartphone on the charger as often as possible to ensure it is ready to go. The smartphone sends a message by default, when the smartphone or sensor is close to being discharged. Check up on the smartphone at least once a day to ensure the application is running. Save the number for the smartphone under a contact in the phones receiving alarm calls, this remove the necessity of reading an alarm sms. Routine control The alarm should be tested regularly. Perform powerful seizure like movements with the armband, check the smartphone goes into alarm and the right number receives an alarm call. A routine control should be performed every week, every time the phone has been rebooted, or an alarm number is changed. Test the functionality of all created locations as well. Allow ten minutes to pass between creating a location and testing it, as the smartphone has to detect the use of a new location and determine the current location before testing. Ensure the application is running on the smartphone before leaving the user unsupervised. Phone: +45 58 50 05 65 Page 12 of 17

SIM-lock It is a good idea to remove the SIM-lock from the user smartphone. Without the lock, the card may be abused if stolen, but it ensures the smartphone is ready for use right after powering it on. The SIM-lock is removed by entering the smartphone settings and selecting the following points. Security -> Set up SIM card lock The card is locked, if Lock-SIM is selected To disable the lock, select Lock SIM, input the PIN-code and press OK. The smartphone will no longer require a PIN code upon start-up, if the entered code is correct. Limitations in range The sensor and the smartphone have a mutual indoor range of 10 to 15 meters, depending on the surroundings. The smartphone should be placed close to the user s bed, when the user sleeps as the body can block wireless signals. The sensor will perform fast yellow blinks when it is not connected to the smartphone. When the smartphone cannot communicate with the sensor, it will give off an audible notification every 30 seconds. When configured for it, the smartphone will send a warning sms with the text Lost connection with sensor and the users name to the alarm number. Cleaning and storing Armband and smartphone can be cleaned with a damp cloth, possibly with some rubbing alcohol. Neither armband nor smartphone should be exposed to water during cleaning and should be handled with care. The smartphone must follow the user of the sensor. Phone: +45 58 50 05 65 Page 13 of 17

Troubleshooting Sensor The sensor does not give of any signals during normal operation. When charging or recently connected, the sensor performs slow yellow blinks. If the sensor is not connected to the smartphone, it will perform short fast yellow blinks. The sensor flashes red when an alarm is detected. The sensor does not give of any signals when it is fully discharged, but the smartphone will signal it cannot find the sensor. Multiple dialler apps If there are multiple dialler apps installed on the smartphone, such as (not limited to) Skype or Viber, these diallers can interfere with the Epi-Care mobile app functionality. We highly recommend uninstalling any custom dialler app as it can interfere with the calling feature of the Epi-Care mobile app! If you need to keep your custom dialler, you will need to follow the below steps to ensure the correct operation of the Epi-Care mobile app: The regular phone dialler must be selected as the default dialler for all calls to the main, backup and location specific numbers. This is best done by creating an alarm with the device and letting it call both the main number and the backup number. When it asks which dialler to use, select the regular phone dialler and select always. Make sure to do this for both the main and backup number. If locations are used, this procedure must be done for each location specific number. If any of the numbers is changed in the future, this procedure must be repeated. Battery savers Do not install battery savers on the smartphone. If the smartphone does not respond to sensor alarms and the icon goes red when the smartphone screen is turned on, the app is being blocked by a battery saver. Battery savers work by blocking apps running in the background when the smartphone has been idle for a while. When the Epi-Care mobile app is blocked by a battery saver, it will not be able to perform any tasks and alarms will not be responded to. Disable any battery savers including the ones supplied with the phone such as STAMINA mode or put Epi-Care mobile in the list of permitted background tasks for the active battery saver, if this is possible. Battery optimisation Some smartphones warn about app battery use and the Epi-care mobile app uses enough power to be registered as a high battery use app, which the phone will suggest to optimise. Please do not enable battery optimisations even if the phone suggests it, as this will break the Epi- Care mobile app s functionality, similar to any third party battery saver apps. Lost protect settings code If the code protecting the settings is lost, the app data will have to be cleared or the app uninstalled and installed again before any settings can be changed. Clearing the app data or uninstalling the app will result in losing all stored app data; this includes the stored events, call locations and alarm settings. Phone: +45 58 50 05 65 Page 14 of 17

Log of events The application log should be reviewed, if the alarm behaves irregular. Open the application and select EVENTS. Verify there are no errors or several daily connects. The alarm does not work, if the app is being blocked by a battery saver on the smartphone. The alarm might not work if a custom dialler is installed. By swiping down from the top of smartphone screen, you will be able to read the current status. Alarm detected. The smartphone plays a short notification sound every time a functional change occurs. If a change affects the safety of the alarm, the notification icon in the dropdown menu and the sensor icon on the main screen will change colour to yellow or red. When the sensor icon is yellow, the alarm still works but the cause should be remedied. When the sensor icon is red, the alarm does not work and the error has to be remedied. The smartphone app plays a notification sound every time a change in operation is registered, examples of changes are the sensor needs to be charged or the sensor is connected to its charger. If the alarm does not work, the app will play a notification sound every 30 second. The app does not emit any sounds if the smartphone is set to only vibrate or is put into silent mode. It is also possible to read what errors the smartphone has detected by swiping down from the top of the smartphone screen. The following table describe each notification and cause. Battery change Sensor The sensor battery is able to hold a day of charge for two years. After this period, the battery should be exchanged, consult your local distributor for a replacement. Unauthorized opening of the sensor will void the warranty. Smartphone The battery in the smartphone can be changed by the distributor or a local electronics store. There is no guarantee that the smartphone battery can run an entire day of one charge.
