tips from the pros GREEN THUMB TIPS FRESH CUT TREES & HOLIDAY GREENS Cut 1 to 2 inches off the trunk of your tree and immediately place it in water. Add some Keeps- It-Green tree preservative to the water. A spray of Wilt Stop will prolong the life of your fresh greens and Christmas tree. Check the water level daily. A tree may "drink" a gallon or more of water each day. If the water reservoir gets dry, even once, the tree cut will seal and may not take up water again. Place the tree away from heat sources, including fireplaces, wood stoves, heat vents, and direct sunlight. FLOWER GARDENS There is still time to plant spring-flowering bulbs until the ground freezes. You'll be happy you planted some extras when they bloom early next spring. If you are cleaning out your annual pots, you can recycle both the old plants and the soil, by either putting them right in your gardens, or by putting them in your compost bin. VEGETABLE GARDENS Test your soil for ph and nutrients, so you'll know what is needed before you plant next spring. Soil amendments that improve your gardens can be tilled or spaded in now and will sit over the winter. We can test your soil for you at Echter's, or use one of our easy-to-do test kits and test it yourself. TREES & SHRUBS Water your trees, shrubs, perennial and bulb beds every 4-6 weeks throughout the winter. If dry soil freezes, there is a good chance there will be root damage. Tree wrap is essential winter protection for young trees that have not yet developed their mature bark. The purpose is to keep the tree's bark temperature consistent. Start wrapping at the bottom and overlap up to the first set of branches. In Denver, wrap about November 15 and remove the wrap around April 1. If you have not used de-icer on your walks, make good use of snow by shoveling the snow onto your shrubs, trees and perennial beds. It will provide insulation from cold winter winds and as it melts, it will add moisture to your plants. INDOOR PLANTS Poinsettias prefer a bright area away from cold drafts and heat vents. Keep them from direct sun. Never allow the soil of your poinsettias to dry out completely, but be sure they are not always wet or sitting in water inside the foil wrap. Norfolk Island pines make great living Christmas trees and wonderful houseplants after the holidays. Be sure you use very lightweight ornaments and coolburning twinkle lights when you decorate these beautiful trees. Keep these plants away from drafts and heating vents. FEATHERED FRIENDS Put your leftover Christmas tree outside, and decorate it with strings of popcorn and cranberries to feed the birds. Roll pine cones in peanut butter or lard, then seed for a tasty holiday treat. Better yet, join us for a free workshop to make your own pine cone bird feeder. See page 7 for details. Insect-eating birds such as flickers and nuthatches have a taste for suet rather than seed. Suet seed blocks are a highenergy source for birds in cold weather. OUTDOOR LIVING Clean wrought iron and aluminum furniture and protect your patio furniture and grills with appropriately-fitted covers. Remove concrete birdbath tops to prevent freezing and thawing, which results in cement cracking and chipping. 6 Echter s Newsletter

She's especially gifted at listening to, and intuitively honing in on, what customers really want. Her favorite part of her job, though, is going to the vendor shows and picking out all of the distinctly unique products that will later grace the shelves here at Echter's. Heather is a Wheat Ridge native, and started with Echter's over fourteen years ago, right out of high school, as a cashier. Her co-workers love her creativity in setting up displays and her attention to detail in all she does. When she's not working, Heather keeps busy with family life. Her twoyear-old daughter, Olivia keeps her and husband, Roger on their feet, but when she finally gets a quiet moment, she can usually be found reading not surprising, since she holds a degree in English education from Metro State University.
