Open Gates A publication of the Gates Cactus & Succulent Society December 2018 NEXT MEETING, WEDNESDAY, December 5th at 6:00 PM AT THE REDLANDS CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE 1307 E CITRUS AVE, IN REDLANDS, CA Plants of the Month Cactus Holiday Party Succulent Holiday Party Save the Date! New dates coming soon! From Our President: Thank you everyone who participated with our auction event last month. There were thirty-five bidders trying to outbid each other for the forty-seven coveted plants/items. To everyone who had donated plants and cactus-related items, your generosity was paramount to the successful auction. Perhaps our most exciting bidding moment came with Rene and Rico still vowing to remain friends despite one of them being the winner after a hard-fought bidding match. A special appreciation goes to Vince Basta for assisting as our auctioneer. One of the positions for Director on the Board has become vacant. Andrew Gould is no longer able to serve in the capacity of Director for the Gates CSS Board and the club needs your help. The Board encourages all interested members to consider joining the leadership team. Please contact me, Trisha Davis or any of the current Board members for further information. December is finally upon us once again and that marks the ending to another wonderful year for our club. We have accomplished and experienced many challenging, exciting and memorable moments during the preceding eleven months. Each of you undoubtedly has had your own special moments with the club and I do hope you will share and enjoy many more into the New Year. Needless the say, each of us when we collectively come together help make Gates CSS the unique club that we are today. I cannot thank enough each of you for being a part of this amazing effort. As the holiday season and a new year approach, remember to find peace and comfort; always be gracious to one another; and be grateful to have your health and thankful for 2019. I leave you with some final thoughts: Buon Natale, Chuc Mung Giang Sinh, Feliz Navidad, Frohliche Weihnachten, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Joyeux Noel, Maligayang Pasko, Mele Kalikimaka, Merii Kurisumasu, Merry Christmas, Milad Mubarak -Phuc President 909-910-9195 Phuc Huynh Director 951-897-2220 Karen Roholt Vice President 760-881-0184 Trisha Davis Director Past President 909-783-2477 Don McGrew Director 909-882-6013 Sande Martin Treasurer 909-633-6934 Jo Ann Crabtree Director 909-987-5706 John Reynolds Secretary 330-986-6313 Jeffery Loew Librarian 951-682-3795 Karen Fleisher Editor 760-881-0184 Trisha Davis Greeter 951-781-8205 Teresa Wassman Sales Chair 909-987-5706 Ann Reynolds Cactus Rescue 330-986-6313 Jeffery Loew Program chair 661-406-9816 Woody Minnich Leadership Team 2018

Our Program This Month HOLIDAY PARTY The Gates C&SS has had another fantastic year and we plan to close it out with a terrific Great Big Party. The annual event provides that perfect evening to relax, enjoy fabulous food and have a chance to schmooze with old and new friends in the club. Very little business, just a good social evening. Take note of the time. We start the evening early, so we can enjoy it at our leisure. Plan to arrive by 6:00. We like to start serving no later than 6:30. Here are the details: Tables are set and decorated by our committee, they can use your help around 5:45 pm. At November s meeting, a food list was passed around. Please bring the dish you signed up to for. If you signed up to bring a turkey, or ham, please carve the meat before bringing it our dinner. There won t be any space or time to carve once the meeting begins. The club also provides all of the necessary plates, cutlery, cups etc. We have plenty of serving utensils (lots left from previous pot-lucks), so don t bother to bring yours, just the dish to serve it from. Again, the party will begin at 6:00! Ask the Experts Have a mystery plant? would you Like to know the species name of your plants? Well the experts are here to help! Bring in your plant, or a good picture, to our next meeting and we will call on our expert members to help solve your mystery Mini Show Plants for 2019 Please remember to CLEARLY and completely fill out the Mini show entry forms. Incomplete or illegible forms will be disqualified.please note, we will no longer have the Large and Small categories. Newman Achievement Award The Hazelle and Davis Newman Award is given annually to a person or couple who have served the society with contributions of time and talent and have not been so honored before. The nominations must be in writing (none from the floor) and be presented or emailed to the President or the Newsletter Editor prior to the beginning of the January meeting. We will vote on the winner in the February meeting. Photos from Our November Auction Note from the Vice President/Editor If you are planning to renew your membership and pay your dues in December, please renew through the mail. You can mail a check to Jo Ann or pay your dues in person in the month of January. We want everyone to enjoy the holiday party at the up coming meeting, so please refrain from paying membership dues in person, just at this months holiday meeting. Also, as our President mentioned in his message above, the board needs a director seat filled. Our beloved club thrives and exsists on volunteers, so please consider volunteering for our board. It might sound intimiating, but it s a very simple seat. A Director helps by voting on board motions, gives their input on important matters, helps brainstorm and plan future events for the club etc. As a director, you get to give your input and help the board shape the year ahead for the club. It s a very rewarding experience and a great way to get involved. If you haven t already, Give it a try! Happy Holidays and Wonderful New Year! -Trisha Davis Thank you to everyone who donated and helped out during our auction!
