INTRODUCTION Planning to succeed Micah Kitchens Being organized and schooled in what to expect from a project such as renovating or building a new kitchen will ensure that your experience is enjoyable and not fraught with disappointment. Having the tools both intellectually and physically can turn the journey to a new kitchen into an educational and satisfying one. Know what to expect Ensure that you and your family are in agreement as to what type of renovation or build you want. Do you expect a top of the range, industrial style kitchen or do you simply need an aesthetic overhaul of the existing space? This will impact on the budget and the living conditions during the building process as the family may be without cooking facilities during this time. Look at magazines and books for ideas of the style of kitchen you want. If you start up a project with a good idea of the look and feel you ultimately visualize, the outcome can be projected throughout the process and the designer will find it easier to pull all the elements together. Organise your finances by checking whether you need to take out a personal loan or draw from an existing bond. Savings sitting in the bank may be the smartest way to go as you won t have to deal with the bank checking on progress as it looks after 4 Beautiful Kitchens and Appliances - Spring 2013

ORIENTATION Franke the interests of its debtor. Plan the space before seeing a designer - have a thorough understanding of how you and the family expect to move around the kitchen. If you can communicate this to a designer, their job will be a lot easier. As the expert, they can then add advice and expert consultation on the original projection. This will entail layout planning to a large extent, so research the various models and decide what would work in the space and for you. View your kitchen in terms of five zones: consumables, nonconsumables, cleaning, preparation and cooking. By analyzing how you use each of these zones when moving around in your kitchen, you can work with a designer in creating the most effective and practical space. INTRODUCTION Get a designer Engaging with a designer and ultimately a kitchen company is a key aspect of the orientation of kitchen plan process. Many companies have their own in-house designers and offer 3D CAD drawing as part of their quotations. Often, the quote is charged for if you don t choose to use the kitchen company that drew up the design. Domestic design programmes can be a good way to play around with your ideas before briefing a designer or kitchen company. If you are using a general contractor and not a specialist kitchen building company, then this may be the best route. Choose a kitchen company that can offer references and has a name in the industry. Fly by night outfits will ultimately cost you more money. Associations like the Kitchen Specialist Association of SA offer a service that regulates and facilitates relationships between kitchen companies and the individual homeowner who wishes to re-do or build a kitchen. Provided the company in question is registered with the association, the client will have a third party to mediate should any issues arise. Project timelines: Once a designer has been given the green light on a new layout plan and fittings, the existing space needs to be gutted. Easylife Kitchens Removing of the old kitchen can be quite a big job - a good contractor is required for this and if any building work is required, this will follow. Remember to try and dispose of the old fittings responsibly and in an environmentally friendly way. Plumbing and electrics need to be finalized at this point in order for the new fittings to benefit from the designer placement of such. Windows and doors, skylights and extractor fans need to be in place before carcasses are fitted so that they are protected from the elements. Gas and water lines must be taken care of before the kitchen company comes on site. H2O International Putting together a collection of interior ingredients Choosing elements for the kitchen is a fun and important process. Each individual item needs to be carefully vetted for characteristic integrity and also seen in the context of the room so that it coordinates with other elements. Here are the major considerations: 6 Beautiful Kitchens and Appliances - Spring 2013

ORIENTATION If you start up a project with a good idea of the look and feel you ultimately visualize, the outcome can be projected throughout the process Diva Cucine 1. Cabinetry needs a lead time for the manufacture of the carcasses and bases. The choice of surface material will impact quite heavily on the look of the room, so try to select your choice of cabinet early in the process. Lead times will differ according to whether you choose a standard cabinet style, custom or semi-custom styling. Cupboard interior space and how it is designed can make a kitchen especially functional. Vamped up pantry units and interior hardware that creates highly useable space in previously ignored areas should be investigated to ensure an even more exciting space. 2. Worktop surfaces tend to be the next consideration. What is probably the next most obvious textural element may be slightly less complicated than the cupboards. Granite and manmade stone materials are popular but broaden your horizon by considering options like glass and butcher blocks. These too may have to be shipped from afar so manage the process of buying and cutting the product for installation. At this point it is also advisable to select a sink as it tends to be an extension of the worktop in many respects. Sink sets and taps are often sold together in order to ensure a perfect match in terms of brassware. The worktop height, usually a standard measurement, can be changed to suit the user. 3. Ventilation is very important in a kitchen - ensure that adequate windows and extraction technology are installed so that cooking fumes can escape and fresh air can enter. 4. The door direction of appliances and cabinets will impact on the functioning of the space. Look at how the space operates when units are being opened and shut. 5. Flooring options will need consideration when the base cabinetry has been sorted. With the variety of options, the installation and laying of floors involves different processes. A solid wood or imported tile choice may need shipping from abroad, while tiles will need time for the grout to dry and possibly sealing. Beautiful Kitchens and Appliances - Spring 2013 7

INTRODUCTION Thrown concrete also needs time to dry and left free of traffic to eliminate prints. The flooring may need to extend into the inside of cabinet cavities or finished with skirting along the base. 6. Appliances will need to be reviewed or new ones ordered once the interior has been designed to incorporate them. Remember that dimensions differ so custom appliances may need a specially sized cavity. The plumbing and electrical fittings will ensure that they function optimally, so engage with designers on the specs involved. 7. Wall coating, while part of the process toward the later stages, not only involves the application of paint or wallpaper but also includes the cladding of areas prone to splashes and spills. The splashback behind the stove and low splash-proof covers that run along the wall above work surfaces are usually given treatment. 8. When planning the space, remember that open areas can be used for modular furniture and single pieces. Stand-alone dressers or dining tables used in the centre of a traditional style kitchen give the room a cottage style. 9. Accessories and interior items add to the atmosphere and attract the eye of the kitchen user. These added extras can be aesthetic optionals but are often also functional. Overhead pot racks and wall-hung cutlery racks are lovely to look at and service the space. 10. Never underestimate the impact of lighting. This will involve natural light as well as illuminated elements that give the room depth and increase the functionality of the various interiors. Kitchenshow An Into the woods kitchen, the distressed doors and custom extractor hood flank a stand-alone cooker. World Of Marble And Granite (WOMAG) PhoenixStone BlackStar Eclipse It doesn t mean that because you have limited space you can t create your dream kitchen. Make the best possible use of every spare inch, nook and cranny by using pull-out drawers and inners, to best maximise the available space. Determine your own personal storage space requirements: this will vary from person-to-person according to your cooking and shopping habits, as well as your lifestyle. A good starting point is to make a list of everything that you would like to fit into your kitchen. 8 Beautiful Kitchens and Appliances - Spring 2013
