Presentation: by Erik Hoel Brief info about JGO group and Jiffy Use of Jiffy products in vegetables Questions?

Johan G.Olsen AS (JGO) Jiffy International AS is a wholly owned company of the Johan G. Olsen Group. Johan G. Olsen AS has since it was established in 1912 been a family owned company. During the last quarter of 1998 the shareholders agreed to accept a few selected institutional investors as new shareholders of the company. The new shareholders hold about 35 % of the shares, while the Olsen Family is keeping the remaining shares and thus have the majority of the shares in the company.

Jiffy began its manufacturing in Oslo during the early 1950 s. The original product was the Jiffy peat pot, which allows the roots to penetrate the pot wall. Later Jiffy developed peat pellets named Jiffy-7 and Jiffy-9. In 2002 Jiffy acquired the company Preforma, producing Preforma plant plugs.

Mission Statement: Jiffy's mission is to enable Young Plant Propagators to excel in their industry by providing cost effective solutions to make their young plants stand out as superior products. Our target is to be the worldwide leading supplier of containerised substrates to professional growers. We will achieve this through continuous innovation and consistent compliance to high standards of quality and environmental awareness.

JIFFY - a leading supplier to plant propagation Each day millions of plants come to life in a Jiffy Product. Our propagation products consist of peat, wood pulp, and coir pith marking the Jiffy products as environmentally friendly. These products simplify transplanting, and ensure rapid growth and healthy plants for growers and gardeners world-wide

Jiffy headquarters Kristiansand Norway Jiffy, Sri Lanka The Jiffy Group has manufacturing plants in Holland, Norway, Denmark, USA, Canada and Sri Lanka, in addition to sales offices in England, Germany, France, Kenya, Japan and Colombia. Agencies and importers are located throughout the world. Jiffy, Holland Jiffy, Norway Jiffy, Denmark Jiffy, Canada Jiffy, USA

Jiffy-7

Jiffy-7 Mix Jiffy Products International AS, Stange, Norway General 1.001 Product Manual - General Information The peat substrate used in Jiffy-7 pellets is made from carefully selected raw materials to provide a stable and controlled environment for propagation of plants from either seeds, tissue culture or cuttings. The principal constituents of the peat mix include White Sphagnum peat from exclusive sources, a Coir Pith additive for enhancing drainage properties and the addition of a calcareous lime and a low ammonium fertiliser tailor-made for Jiffy-7 and young plants. The peat sources are carefully selected and continuously monitored in order to safeguard the quality standard with respect to physical and microbiological properties of the material. The peat is, during processing, exposed to moderately elevated temperatures which will help eliminating harmful presence of foreign seeds and detrimental organisms.

Jiffy-7 Mix Specifications: Main constituents: White Sphagnum Peat, block harvested : 50 % +/- 10 White Sphagnum Peat, vacuum harvested: 25 % +/- 10 Coir Pith : 25 % +/- 5 Fertiliser (low ammonium, soluble calcium, complete PGmix* fertiliser containing microelements): 1,25 ms +/- 0.25 Calcareous lime ph 5.5 +/- 0.5 Water content : 22 % +/- 3 Remarks: In order to maintain a high quality end product the choice of materials in the peat mix and their relative proportion in the mix is subject to continues changes due to natural variations in the organic base materials. Please note that the fertiliser concentration (conductivity) as well as the ph is measured in a water extract from a saturated/slightly drained Jiffy-7. *) PGmix is a commercial product name from HydroAgri. 27.01.98 Operations Manager: RK

General advantages by using Jiffy Pots or Jiffy pellets Compared to direct seeding in open fields: Young plants under controlled conditions gives the best start Timing of the crop is easier No thinning needed (which makes use of high quality seeds easier More uniform crop, shorter harvesting, higher profit Easier control of weeds, pests and diseases Earlier yields normally gives higher prices Heavier yields: more tons/ha or less acreage/ton

General advantages cont. Compared to bare root seedlings etc. Easier handling No removel, grading and preparing of seedlings needed No translanting chocks Faster and easier transplanting Possible to keep plants for a few days due to bad wether conditions etc. Better plant quality Quicker establishment in the field, continious growth

Strawberry Easy handling Quick rooting Earlier and quicker planting Reduced field losses Increased yield

Preforma plant plugs

What is a Preforma plug? Preforma Plugs since 1990 A high quality plug made from a high quality substrate in combination with a binder A very flexible plug in size and substrate Very good air/moist content wet substrate, ready to use for the grower Several options possible as sticking hole, wetting agent etc.

Type of plugs Preforma Plantplug Preforma Boxplug

What kind of mixes to use? Generally we can use any kind of mix. For growers who buy more then 50.000 trays per year, we are able to develop a new mix. The mixes we have at present are: DSP2 PP6P PP03 PP01 BSPR JZM1 VECO1 VCK

DSP2 This mixture contains circa 60% white peat, 30% Irish peat and 10% Perlite 2. EC(ms/cm) PH Min. 0.70 5.00 Mod. 0.90 5.35 Max. 1.10 6.00

VECO1 This mixture contains peat and cocos (palmtree). EC(ms/cm) PH Min. 0.80 4.80 Mod. Max. 1.20 5.30

Promising results from testing Preforma for vegetable propagation in Japan By Junichi Obara 06.02.2006 The Nagano Vegetable & Ornamentals Experiment Station has conducted an interesting study of propagation of vegetables in Preforma. The study compared the Preforma concept to propagation in trays filled with regular substrate, and to direct sowing in the field. Testing was done on China Cabbage and Broccoli. The test showed that propagation in Preforma allowed a much earlier transplanting to field (after 12 days compared to 25-30 days needed for plants propagated in regular substrate). This allows for a significantly better utilization of greenhouse space (quicker rotation). Other findings on the Preforma Plant Plugs: - healthier roots and faster regrowth after transplanting - roots grow deeper and wider, and are hence less prone to disease - higher germination percentage In charge of the trial was Tomomi Ozawa, Chief Vegetable Researcher.

Grafted tomato has increased in Spain from less than one million plants 4-5 years ago to about 20 million plants in 2003-2004. Besides the control of soil borne pathogens, grafting gives greater strength to the plants which allows planting density to be reduced by half (10-12000 plants instead of the 20,000 plants/ha). This means the cost of the plants is reduced. Better growth at low temperatures and a longer production cycle are also achieved through grafting. It is expected that within 2-3 years, the whole production in Morocco for export will be using grafted plants. Preforma plugs are helping those growers who chose grafting by providing the best available soil quality. Preforma plugs (now being manufactured also in Spain) ensure during the grafted process, inert atmosphere and stable repeatable soil parameters such as ph and salinity. This season several growers from South Spain have been experiencing success thanks to Jiffy technology. One of those growers has produced 26 000 trays (beyond 7 Million plants) of grafted Tomatoe and already booking in for next season
