GREEN PRACTICES PALM ISLAND RESORT & SPA

Making a Difference Palm Island Resort & Spa management understands the impact of sustainable tourism on the guests, staff and our neighbor islands. As a result we have made it our mission to identify, monitor and continually improve all aspects of environmental sustainability in our resort. Our goal is to increase our guest and staff awareness, and expand on local programs and community organizations in an effort to further the preservation of the Caribbean.

Change Starts with Us Humanity is consuming natural resources at an astonishing rate. During the 20th century, global raw material used rose at about twice the rate of population growth. Every year humanity consumes far more than what the planet can naturally replenish. At Palm Island Resort & Spa we are constantly looking at ways to improve on our environmental impact by being conscious of our surroundings and the environment in which we operate. Our dedication and commitment in promoting responsible and eco tourism is always ongoing and we hope you will support our efforts as much as possible.

Our Promise Palm Island Resort & Spa is fiercely committed to sustainability and eco-friendly practices in every capacity, from the design of the resort which lives in harmony with natural lagoon to our environmentally-friendly practices throughout the resort. We are dedicated to sustainability in every way. We are fully committed to maintaining the highest levels of sustainability without compromising on luxury by protecting the land and eco-friendly practices as well as providing a high level guest experience. We worry about the environment so you can spend your time enjoying the natural beauty of Palm Island, partaking in watersports or succumbing to the Spa s deep relaxation treatments. In a nutshell we worry about nature so you don t have to.

Our Drinking Water Our resort has a state-of-the-art reverse osmosis water plant, which takes salt water from the sea through a purification process to produce 40,000 gallons of fresh water daily. From the reverse osmosis plant, water is passed through a lime filter to neutralize the water hardness. A small amount of chlorine is then injected to kill any bacteria still left in the water. The final product is water that is 50% better than what is required by U.S. standards set as a benchmark for municipalities throughout the United States, and therefore perfectly safe to drink.

We Are Working On Eliminating Our Carbon Footprint Palm Island Resort & Spa management understands the impact of sustainable tourism on our guests, staff and neighbor islands, which is why we have joined other local organizations to increase sustainability. It is the goal of the resort to identify, monitor and continually improve all aspects of environmental longevity. We purchase local products whenever possible, and reducing our energy, lowering the resort s water consumption and implementing guest and staff awareness programs, allow us to accomplish our goal. Our many environmental initiatives include the following:

Reduce Reuse Recycle The Housekeeping department uses Chemical Universe products to reduce the amount of harmful chemicals used in cleaning All of our watersports provided are non-motorized We ask our guest to turn off their room lights when they are not there. We ask our guest to refill their water bottles from our bar & restaurants We use reusable plastic cups in our staff canteen to reduce plastic and styrofoam waste We irrigate the grounds and landscaping with gray water Waste food is separated and given to a local pig farmer, while vegetable and fruit waste is composted Kitchen oil is given to a supplier who recycles it and converts it to engine oil We ask our guest to reuse their bath and beach towels as much as possible Only recycled paper is used in our offices Paper is shredded and recycled within our offices In-room recycling bins are provided for ease of separation of recycled items Old resort bed sheets are given to a local businessman for his decorating company We use paper straws as plastic is harmful to marine life

From Farm to Table Every morning Executive Chef Baka takes a break from his busy kitchen operations to walk out to the source of much of his culinary inspiration: Palm Island Resort & Spa s very own organic garden that harvests tomatoes, beets, carrots, potatoes and much more delicious fresh produce. Some of the day s harvest will make its way from the garden onto our guests plates in one of our restaurant s signature dishes. The garden is an initiative Palm Island Resort & Spa has committed to, in order to ensure that not only the freshest ingredients are incorporated in our dishes, but to reduce our carbon footprint caused by energy-intensive methods of produce shipments from foreign farms.

Sharing Our Space Palm Island Resort & Spa is a rustic paradise with three unique ecosystems: marine, wetland and land. The natural lagoon and its surrounding areas are home to a variety of flora and fauna. Here, in this nature lovers paradise, we provide guests with walking tours and learn about the abundant bird, plant and marine species native to this island. Our weekly botanical stroll is designed to cultivate conservation awareness.

Grenadines Wild Our passion for sustainability extends not only to our guests but to the island s first inhabitants, sea turtles. These gentle creatures have made The Grenadines s beaches a popular nesting site. In the months of June through September guests at Palm Island Resort & Spa, can sometimes enjoy the wondrous experience of observing sea turtles hatch from their shells and make their way to the sea. In Palm Island you can find Green, Hawksbill and Leatherback, our nesting turtles, as well as Loggerheads which are visiting turtles. This yearly event encourages our guests to spread the word about sea turtle conservation. We strongly encourage all our guests to respect the vulnerability of these beautiful endangered creatures.
