Pleased to have met you As part of the Expedite programme at Oerol this year.
We were delighted to welcome you to the Wayfaring installation as part of the Expedite programme at Oerol this year. You came at the start of the installation and over the course of the week; the piece grew with contributions from over a thousand audience members a day. The installation was always live to the local conditions, whether it was the winds blowing in off the sea, or the many high tides that repeatedly swept water across the whole site. Audience members were invited to bring and leave a contribution. As well as many thousands of words, some very special objects were brought to the island such as a wedding dress from a man whose wife had recently died, a pair of well travelled much loved deck shoes and a collection of homemade wooden whistles. Many of the hundreds of Terschelling school children who had worked with Dutch artists, Frederik & Ebbinge had the chance to visit the whole installation to see their work in the larger context. Thousands more attended the resolution of the installation, which was the closing event of the festival, for a memorable and moving finale to Oerol 2018.

I found some of it very thought-provoking, and some of it made me ponder my ancestors, who lived far more connected to the land than us; some of it brought up strong emotions, but none of them were negative. It was lovely beyond my anticipation.
