MINUTES OF THE IRIS SOCIETY OF AUSTIN SEPTEMBER 5, 2017 Everyone wished a speedy recovery to both Mel Landers and Charles Barksdale, and condolences to Kathy Petheram on the loss of her husband. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of these families. Donna Little is accepting donations of 2-gallon or larger nursery pots to pot new rhizomes for Charles Barksdale. Welcome to a new visitor, Sarah. Donna gifted rhizomes to folks in attendance. The 2018 Iris Show will be Saturday April 7, 2018. The regular April meeting date is Tuesday April 10, but many folks will be out of town that week at the AIS & SLA National conventions in New Orleans. A motion was made to simply cancel the April 10 meeting and skip that month, and it passed with no dissension. The March 2018 meeting program will be on grooming iris for the show in April. Lynda Miller will be presenting Judges Training on Median Irises and an additional program hosted by the Dallas Society on Saturday October 21, in Dallas, with a reception and dinner Friday night as well. There may be folks from our club interested in sharing rides and hotel rooms AIS medals from the 2017 Iris Show were presented Silver to Don & Pat Freeman, Bronze to Jim Landers There was discussion of the 2018 Region 17 Meeting: Austin last hosted a Region 17 Meeting in 2012 Austin s Daylily Society recently hosted their regional convention at a hotel in Round Rock They brought in their own food and the hotel provided breakfast for its guests. Stephanie Sheridan will confirm which hotel it was There was a motion to continue investigating the possibility of Austin hosting the Region 17 2018 Meeting, and agreement to volunteer time and energy to make that happen. It passed without dissention Ellen Singleton reported on the plans for the 2017 Rhizome Sale: Set-up at Norris Conference Center Friday Sept 8, 2p 5p Sale Saturday Sept 9, 2017, 9a 2p (Members should arrive around 8a) Rhizomes were ordered from Mid-America Gardens & Sutton Iris Gardens The October sale together with the Porcelain Arts Club at Zilker will be Saturday October 27, 2017 Members then proceeded to price rhizomes for the sale. Respectfully submitted, Jaime Hadley VP Membership, in the absence of the Secretary DUTIES FOR CONSERVANCY Thank you for completing the Austin Area Garden Conservancy/Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy Survey and hopefully you have gone to www.zilkergarden.org for the Conservancy, center page, or directly to www.zbgconservancy.org to read the information as the contract with the Austin Parks and Recreation Department will be renegotiated for the 2017 transition. The goal is to raise $150,000 from 2 special events per year and increase volunteer involvement. Jennifer Orr is the Board President of ZBGC while Marion Alsup is President of AAGC.

TALL BEARDED IRIS SOCIETY SPRING MEETING The Tall Bearded Iris Society 2018 Spring Meeting will be held May 11-13 in the Red Lion Hotel, 3301 Market Street in Salem Oregon 97301 during the Region 13 Meeting hosted by Oregon Trail Iris Society. Registration closes May 2, and the cost is $95, which includes Red Lion breakfast buffet, bus garden tour with lunch and Judges Training, banquet with Guest Speaker Barry Blyth, and iris redistribution. Herbed Chicken, Seared Salmon, or Saffron Risotto Cake are the choices for the banquet. Tours include Miller's Manor Garden in Canby, and Mid-America Garden and Schreiner's Iris Garden in Brooks. The registration form can be downloaded from www.oregontrailirissociety.com. Hotel reservations should be made by calling 503-370-7888. WEEDING WEDNESDAY If you have nothing to do, please arrive at Weeding Wednesday, October 11, to weed the newer garden of irises. The spurge is low; therefore, it can not be seen from the road, but it needs to be pulled out and carried away. The soil probably was purchased with the seeds. The Louisiana Irises need to be planted in new soil. The first garden that was planted does not have garden markers as it once did. Perhaps someone used several for the new bed. All of the irises are not looking as healthy as they should, and they had at least 6 inches of rain as well as being watered by the sprinkler system. Thank you so much for your attention to the Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy. Arrive at 7:30 A.M. and work until 10 A.M. Since the garden opens at 9 A.M., someone will open the gate. You should bring a hat, gloves, and anything that you need to weed. Water will be provided. Do not drink from the water system in the garden. NEW SIGNAGE Tracey Rogers has acquired two new signs for our society to use at future sales and shows. They are nylon feather flags, 8' x 2', similar to signs seen everywhere in front of stores and gas stations. She also has received outdoor feather flag stake kits for displaying the flags. Each flag has a colorful picture of an iris, and one also bears the word SALE in large letters. Thank you, Tracey, for a job well done.

HEY, GANG, LET S HAVE A S-A-L-E!
