F22 Environmentally Speaking Waste and Recycling Newsletter Sponsored by the City of Fontana and Free Residential Pick Up of Used Oil and Filters The City of Fontana Public Work s Environmental Division offers a free program that allows residents to recycle their used motor oil and filters without leaving the comfort of their homes. All you have to do is call (909) 350-6789 or submit an online request form and you re on your way to protecting our environment. The Curbside Used Oil and Filter Recycling Program allows residents to recycle their motor oil up to 10 gallons per pick-up and filters without leaving their homes. The benefits of properly recycling used motor oil ensures that it won t be poured onto the ground or into storm drains and tossed into the trash can, which can contaminate and polute the soil, groundwater and our water. Taking this simple step will protect our environment. To participate, simply do the following: 1. Call (909) 350-6789 and make an appointment for a collection, or complete the online form at www.fontana.org/used_oil 2. On your phone message include your name, address, and phone number. You will be able to obtain a free oil recycling container and filter bucket from the City. 3. Leave the city provided container of oil near the front door or garage of your house the day of the collection. Do not leave at curbside. 4. Do not mix with any other fluids, solvents (i.e. gasoline, antifreeze, brake fluids, part cleaners, etc.) paint, water, dirt or debris of any kind. It must be clean used motor oil only, if it is to be recycled. Containers frequently tip over, causing spillage and materials to get strewn throughout streets and neighborhoods. In an effort to assist in the prevention of these situations, the following are suggestions: Bag and tie trash and/or recyclables before placing in barrels This will make clean-up efforts easier should the barrels blow over. Avoid placing trash and/or recycling out on windy days If possible, do not set your trash or recyclables out for collection on windy days. Bag any excessive trash and recyclables that will not fit in your barrel and Burrtec will collect all accumulated bags along with your containers on your next scheduled collection day.
