POTTING MIX TREATMENT: USE A 60 LITRE BIN, ADD 20 LITRES WATER. ADD THE FOLLOWING; 50 GRAMS OF CALCIUM NITRATE. 100 MILS OF ALGINOX 40 GRAMS HIGH NITROGEN FERTILISER ADD YOUR CHOSEN POTTING MIX AND SOAK FOR 48 HOURS, EMPTY OUT AND RINSE OFF. THIS CAN BE USED WET OR STORED DRY FOR LATER USE IN POTTING. FOR SMALL GROWERS, ENSURE THE POTTING MIX IS WET WHEN BEING USED LATER SO THAT THE YOUNG ORCHIDS PLANTS HAVE INSTANT MOISTURE. SPRAYER BOTTLES: MIX IN 1 LITRE WATER; 4MLS ALGINOX and 5 MILS GROWTH FORMULAR This solution must be used on all naked roots and newly severed roots on of an Orchid that has been broken up for re-potting. This sprayer bottle solution may be applied to all newly potted orchids for 3 weeks after potting.

FERTILISERS: There are two types of Fertilizer- Organic and Inorganic. Organic Fertilizer is made up of Plants and Animal products. Inorganic Fertilizer is made up of Chemical. Fertilisers come in Basel Form or Foliar Form. Organic and Inorganic fertilizers must be used separately. (Never mix both together for application) Organic Fertilizer is made of fish and animal products and is usually applied by foliar spraying (example Seasol and Charlie Carp). Seasol is a plant tonic and has no nutrient value but is good for the wellbeing of the plant. Molasses is high in Potassium, this is organic, so can be applied by foliar spraying. Basel form fertilizer is fertilizer which you can sprinkle around your plants edge. Bone Meal, which is in powdered form, can be applied by sprinkling around the edge of the plant s pot, where the roots are positioned. Basel form fertilizer comes in various Nutrient values. The high Nitrogen and medium Potassium is good in spring-summer (September - February). The lower Nitrogen and high Potassium is good for autumn-winter (March July) The Fertiliser is activated when the temperature is around 21 0 The foliar fertilizers are Peters Professional All-rounder, NPK of 20:9:17, ideal for summer, and Bloom booster with NPK of 10:13:17 is ideal for autumn. Foliar fertilizer can be sprayed at ½ strength every fortnight. Happy Orchiding Ian Spider mites, which can attack your Orchids are not an insect, they are a to be treated accordingly with a Miteaside,( there is availability of this treatment in the gardening section at your local plant nursery). Spider Mites attack the Orchid by puncturing the plant thus allowing a fungal infection to take hold of the plant, if concerned bring samples in a plastic container/bag to a Meeting and get better clarification of this pest.

POTTING DEMONSTRATIONS IN PROGRESS: Once you call on Girl Power things look so easy, potting Orchids needn t be that daunting. By observing what John and Deborah does, and the use of the correct tools for the job, has made the job look quite easy. Always use Steriliser on all cutting equipment, ensuring that each plant has been guarded against any possible infection from a previous plant. You will be as confident as John appears. The dedication of these demonstrators is shown with Ian and his Trisodium Jar in full use and Alwyn ensuring that all available knowledge gets through to the New Grower. The simple techniques of cutting up an orchid is to include the rule of thumb of count 4 back from the new leader, yes, the new shoot, you possible will get another group of 4, then the old back cut must go into retirement. The old back cut has done its bit toward the beauty of the Plant/Blooms. The next New & Interested Growers Group on Sunday 7 th September will be at John and Bethel Hughes Residence, 22 Dix St.
