Introduction Welcome to Oxford Royale Academy, and to our 2013 Activities, Excursions and Events programme. This booklet presents just a few highlights of the action packed programme we have in store for you this summer. We have worked hard to create an exciting cultural and recreational programme to complement your studies and ensure you have as much fun as possible throughout your stay in Oxford. Our extra curricular programme grows each year and 2013 is set to offer more activities, excursions and social events than ever before! Activities range from visits to the University of Oxford s grand colleges, to tours around world class museums and playing sport and eating ice cream in the park. In the evening you can look forward to ghost tours, quiz nights and dance classes as you unwind with friends following your day of study. The programme is punctuated with three coach excursions to ensure that you can make the most of your visit to the UK by exploring Oxfordshire and beyond. Oxford is a truly fantastic place to spend the summer, and we hope that this year s programme offers an enjoyable insight into life and study in this culturally rich and vibrant city. We wish you an unforgettable stay with us. Essentials Welcome to Oxford Royale Academy and to this summer s Activities, Excursions and Events Programme. Your time spent with Oxford Royale Academy will be filled with a wide range of activities and events. To help you to enjoy yourself as much as possible, it would be wise to bring the following items with you: waterproof clothing and an umbrella for the unpredictable English weather; trainers for sports activities; comfortable clothing and flat-soled shoes for excursions and coach trips; smart clothes for formal occasions and graduation.
Excursions Events Warwick Castle Thursday 2nd July See medieval England brought back to life at this formidable motte and bailey Castle, originally built under William the Conqueror in the 11th Century. Explore the castle s rich 1000 year history with a full programme of activities to include jousting, archery and falconry, before taking a relaxing stroll around the castle s beautiful Victorian rose garden. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard Saturday 6th July Visit the home of the Royal Navy! Portsmouth is notable for being the UK s only island city, and has been a significant naval port for centuries.you will explore the Royal Navy s colourful history in the Historic Dockyard Museum and have the chance to board HMS Discovery, famous for its role in the Battle of Trafalgar and as the site of Nelson s death. Inter-Campus Party (Theme: Rodeo) Friday 5th July Leave Oxford behind as we transport you to the American Midwest for a Rodeo to remember. Enjoy the array of themed activities we have lined up for you, including line dancing and a rodeo bull ride. Graduation (Theme: Venice Carnival) Friday 12th July Journey through time to the beauty and grandeur of 15th century Venice, home of the masquerade ball. Mask your identity as you enter Venetian high society to celebrate your graduation from Oxford Royale Academy with an elegant evening of dinner and dance at Oxford s best known five star hotel, The Randolph. Natural History Museum, London Thursday 11th July Ever wanted to come face to face with what roamed the earth before us? Or know more about the world we live in today? The Natural History Museum s extensive collection will help you to discover earth s fascinating secrets. Take an escalator ride through a giant sculpture of our planet and see a real piece of the moon, before travelling back in time to get up close to the complete remains of prehistoric dinosaurs.
Afternoon Activities Evening Activities Explore the University of Oxford Immerse yourself in Oxford s ancient university culture and visit some of the city s most beautiful historic sites. See the sandstone buildings and grass quadrangles for which Oxford has been renowned for centuries and visit Christ Church s hall, which inspired the Hogwarts Great Hall set built for the Harry Potter films. You will also have the opportunity to make the most of the summer weather with trips to Magdalen College s deer park and a visit to the impressive University of Oxford Botanic Garden, one of the oldest scientific gardens in the world. Visit Oxford Museums Oxford is a culturally rich town and you will have the opportunity to visit world famous museums during your stay here. The Pitt Rivers Museum accommodates a treasure trove of over 500,000 objects relating to anthropological and archaeological discoveries, and the Museum of Natural History will allow you to explore a wide range of anatomical and natural history specimens against the backdrop of its stunning neo-gothic architecture. The recently renovated Ashmolean Museum is home to many unique artefacts, including some of the earliest examples of Greek and Roman sculptures in the country. Punting Punting is a unique way of viewing Oxford s beautiful sights. Glide quietly through Christ Church meadows where Lewis Carroll was inspired to write Alice in Wonderland, and experience the landscape that has inspired Oxford s great thinkers for centuries. Drumming workshop Learn new skills and have a great time during the drumming workshop. Creative, exciting and colourful, this activity is always very popular. Salsa Workshop Salsa is an expressive and joyful partner dance which originated in Cuba. Pair up and impress your friends back home with your newly discovered dance skills! Sports and Games Relax and unwind by playing team games and sports with friends in the University of Oxford s beautiful parklands or at Magdalen College School s purpose built sports hall. Karaoke Night Exercise your vocal chords and perform for your friends and Counsellors at our karaoke night. Whether you are a singer or not, this evening always proves to be fantastic fun. Oxford Ghost Tour Bill Spectre s theatrical ghost tour is classed as one of Oxford s top attractions. Historically informative, hugely entertaining and chilling to the core, the ghost tour will help you to soak up the atmosphere of this ancient city. Make sure you remember to bring your camera to capture Oxford s spooky side!
